Seagate Backup Plus Hub Desktop Hard Drive (8TB) $239 + Delivery ($0 C&C/In-Store) @ JB Hi-Fi

300

Noticed the price drop on these, not the cheapest $/gb deal, but cheaper than at Officeworks/good guys/amazon

From some googling, they can be shucked and have barracuda pros in em (sometimes?)

The 10TB were reported to have Barracuda Pro or Exos drives in them (because Seagate don't make regular Barracudas in sizes smaller than 10TB). Not sure about now since the Barracuda Pro line doesn't exist anymore.
This one being a 8TB drive should have a regular Barracuda inside and it'll be SMR.

    • Can confirm this is SMR. OK for backups but slow for regular use.

  • Agree with @Trance N Dance regarding likelihood of being SMR drive inside.

As for shucking, if all you want is a cheap 8TB bare drive then try the WD 8TB Blue (WD80EAZZ) which is SMR and is $189 at U-Mart and PLE at the moment. I've never ordered from them so have no idea of shipping or credit card charges but it's still likely to be cheaper.

    • EAZZ is CMR.

      • I'll take your word for it. I was basing it on the fact that last month on Reddit someone stated that line they had been "stealthed" into SMR.

          • @gaoxo: Yep, I knew it was CMR previously, but I was looking to buy several last month when I saw a post on Reddit saying it was now SMR so I put my purchases on hold until I found something else. @Trance N Dance has said it is CMR and I'll take his/her word for it.

        • You'll still find a lot of people who are harping on about the SMR fiasco that WD got "caught" over and bending the truth/impact of it into drives available today to seem relevant.

The truth of the matter is all drive manufacturers secretly/quietly introduced SMR into their line ups. The only difference (and the one that got them) was WD introduced it into their NAS marketed Red lineup when it wasn't suitable for RAID-z (the hottest flavour of RAID at the moment)

          • @Trance N Dance: Thanks for the clarification.

          • @Trance N Dance: It wasn’t really suitable for any RAID. It’s too slow under certain conditions and you get various issues including breaking the array.

  • Sold Out ? Expired ?

    • Looks like it!
