  • The headband looks a little thin, any problems with comfort on top of the head?

    • Personally I haven't had any issues and I wear mine for at least 4hrs and up to 10hrs a day. Your mileage have vary though

I have the 4xx which looks to have the same headband. I have a hotspot right at the top, I bought a wool headband wrap to alleviate that, but now the headband does adjust far enough to fit over my head. Food for thought

If I didn't already have the Sundaras I would probably jump on these. Seems like a steal with planar magnetic headphones for this price.

    • +1

      Sundaras are much better

  • Did it charge you taxes now by any chance?

Also, don’t forget to use referral on OzB, $10 off for new user, better than just using plain new user discount, no? ;)

    • I bought mine last year and there wasn't any taxes

      • Yeah likewise, I only realised this morning when I was trying to buy this, and it shows taxes on my end. I’m curious if it’s the standard now for Aussie buyers..

        • it literally added the discount back on, now its bearly a deal

          • @dbmitch: The discount is $30 USD… how do you figure?

  • +5

So tempted but got so many buds, headphones, earphones already. Must resist.

  • +1

There must be something lacking for planar magnetics to be going for this price

HIFIMAN have just been refining and automating the mass production process of their components, and that's resulting in cheaper prices over time.

Drop are making use of their older parts for the headband and enclosure, but it's otherwise reasonably similar to the HE400 SE, just not sure if it uses Stealth magnets or not.

  • +3

FYI they add on GST now so might want to adjust the price

    • Yep that ended up being $124.90 ~ $170 aud

With the current price of the 6XX, this is one of the best deals in audio right now, but only from the perspective of a starter headphone for music listening and movies.

Imaging is probably a little too fuzzy for gaming, particularly if you haven't got a solid amp and DAC to supply a detailed signal with good current levels. Too cheap an op-amp setup might leave this sounding completely diffuse.

They'd be clearing this because they're overstocked, as it's not been an easy recommendation against the HE 400SE, which is just a little bit more refined and comfortable.

    • against the HE 400SE, which is just a little bit more refined and comfortable.

      Refined in what way?

      • It uses their now mass-produced stealth magnets, which were originally part of the Susvara design. Tends to improve timbre and imaging, while brightening the treble a bit.

The quality of the driver is a big factor though, and this is the bottom of HIFIMAN's planar stack. Both are still better than the older 400 and 4XX lineups.

    Here a review:

Pity the bass isn't that great.

  • That sucks, now there's taxes on everything there. Just made drop more expensive for everything. This must be recent.

  • +1

    Whats good about Planar Magnetic?

    • Usually the bass response is faster than dynamic, leading to more bass precision.

  • +2

The added GST just wiped the discount off the face of the earth
