  • No real interest in any OSX products, but really hoping they do something new with iPhone later this year. Updates have been quite lackluster past few years and still holding on to my iPhone X.

    • +2

What is the "something new" you'd add to your iPhone X to make you want to upgrade?

Serious question as there's really not much innovation happening in any phones anymore. Just the gradual improvements (cameras, battery, screen quality) that together make the iPhone 13 Pro a far better phone than the X.

      • +7

Always-on display, new/foldable form factors, touch ID re-integration, better management of apps and content both on device and on computers, reverse wireless charging, split screen multitasking, iMessage/FaceTime hand-off on Windows, removal of the notch, much faster charging speeds, something "new" we didn't know we needed…

Other manufacturers are innovating, some are hits, most gimmicky misses but iPhone 13 really isn't more than the X aside from camera and performance that is the same bump every year. Impressive as the performance improvements may be, certainly not lacking on X or have any real world difference to most.

Aus version doesn't even have mmWave yet, let alone USB-C like their other products now.

        • +2

The one thing Apple does not do is gimmicky misses in hardware. There's a few software things like Memoji which are pointless but most people buy their iPhone because they are well thought out and polished by the time they launch features.

From your list, No notch, always on display and Touch ID are possible… But I'd rank these as less important than Battery life, Chip performance and Cameras.

Foldable form factor won't happen until they are bulletproof, current foldables get damaged far too easily. Management of apps/content and iMessage for Windows won't happen. Apple wants you to live in their garden for better and worse. Get a Mac and the messages app is there for you. Reverse wireless charging seems kind of pointless. My iPhone 13 lasts less time than my AirPods so why would I want it? As for the something new perhaps things like the U1 chip (added in iPhone 11) that lets you find your AirTags with pin point accuracy meets that criteria. Android still hasn't copied it…

          • @stirlo:

It's called UWB and Samsung has utilised it for the Samsung SmartTag Plus.

          • +1

@stirlo: Still wish we had reverse wireless charging with iPhones. Not just for charging other phones but accessories too. Wish I could just throw away my apple watch charger and charge it off my phone whenever it needed juice.

            • @Croc2: Might be cool in some very rare occasions but you'd have to take you watch off your wrist and leave your phone stationary for some time (apple watch does not charge fast) to have this work. Doesn't seem like a feature I'd use…

              • @stirlo: I usually wear my watch to sleep (for sleep tracking) and need to charge it during the day also I forget to bring my charger when I go away 🙃 standard QI compatibility would also be nice (the watches are already technically compatible with this), I speculate they're withholding this feature for when they run out of new features/upgrades to introduce.

      • +1

I’d upgrade if it had usb-c

        • +4

Righto, but for the over 55% of Australians with iPhone and existing lightning cables this would actually just annoy them… For better of for worse iPhone uses lightning and will probably go totally wireless before switching to USB-C. Thank god apple did invent lightning when they did or we'd probably all be stuck with Micro USB…

      • What is the "something new" you'd add to your iPhone X to make you want to upgrade?

I'm hoping it comes with MineSweeper built into the OS.

        • Not built in but this works
          Minesweeper

          • +1

@Elppa8: That requires an internet connection though.

I prefer a version that can still be used whilst I'm in a nuclear bunker…

    • +3

That joke's 10 years too late now. Some people prefer, want or need Apple hardware. Get over it.

iphones are much better value these days, if anything it's the samsung users that are sheep. there are still good androids, but samsungs are mediocre and overpriced these days.

i have no loyalty towards either, i was an android user from roughly 2012 to 2022 and a samsung user from 2012 to 2020.

the prices for iphones and androids are more or less the same these days, unless you go chinese, which in my opinion is what you should do if you want an android. the iphones feel more polished than android and overall a more premium feeling device, but they have some limitations on customisability.

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/686477
Yep they are totally the same price.

You claim you have no loyalty yet you are spewing complete lies about pricing just because they both have the same RRP even though it's common knowledge Apple doesn't discount things while Samsung has discount from day 1 literally S22 Ultra 256gb down to $1183 on release day.

        • +2

          Samsung has discount from day..

Your point? They did say that they were overpriced. and you agree and so does Samsung, thats why they are discounted.

          • +2

            @RockyRaccoon:

            Your point?

Umm That they are infact NOT the same price as the person above claimed.

Not entirely what you where trying to say with your comment but you failed.

            • @Axelstrife: I did say more or less the same, but you seem to be a triggered Samsung fan, so I doubt it'll make much difference to you. Apple do do discounts, I recently bought an iPhone (first in a decade) and asked the guy at JB if it was possible to get a bigger discount and he said he couldn't give one as it was already below floor price with the discount it had

              • @[Deactivated]: Oh shit! if "Alasdair" says it then i must be a triggered Samsung fan, i have had android's my entire life with my very first android being the first Galaxy S back in 2010 and have had quite a few Samsung devices in my life, While it may seem like i am a Samsung fan, i am just buying what i like hardware and software wise each year which hasn't always been Samsung but has always been android.

That is till this the iPhone 13 pro max was released, while it still has flaws and isn't perfect as so many Apple fans always claim throughout the years it's battery life and performance is unmatched and which is important for me
While this is my first iPhone ive used iPad's for years since android hasn't had good tablets in along time.

                https://i.ibb.co/SV5C1Rc/IMG-0041.jpg - iPhone 13 pro max 128gb, iPad Pro 11" M1 2021

I provide proof i am not making stuff up, unless you care to show me proof of an iPhone release already discounted to the same degree as Samsung does? This year it's a little over 40% discount with the S22 Ultra 256gb getting as low as $1183 with the RRP of $1999

                • +1

@Axelstrife: i didn't claim they discount 40 %, though i would be concerned if the product has been discounted that much less than 2 weeks after release.

my experience of samsung is that the software and hardware you get is just not worth the asking price, even at a 40 % discount. they offer lower performance yet charge nearly as much as apple (with discounts) or as much (without discounts).

if i were to buy another android, which is possible and highly likely as i don't like that i still have to carry my old phone around to use as an MP3 player in my car because i can't put my music on my iphone because it wasn't purchased through itunes, it would not be a samsung unless something drastic changes between now and then.

                  • @[Deactivated]: Someone's been looking too much into benchmark numbers, yes the iPhone is faster benchmarked but real world performance is basically equal.
                    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyEEEODyTaU
Have a watch of phonebuff's speed test vid between iPhone 13 pro max and S22 Ultra, iPhone wins but it shows that even though iPhone blows everything out of the water with it's performance benchmark numbers the S22 Ultra is still right there with it.

iPhone feels slower with real world use purely cause Android animations are faster and can have there speed changed, but you do get used to it.

i can't put my music on my iphone because it wasn't purchased through iTunes

It's the same as old iPods, drag and drop the music files onto the phone with itunes, I literally just did it as ive never tried it before and i wanted to make sure that you could.

                    • +1

@Axelstrife: my experience has been that iphone software feels better than android, android can feel fast but is also often laggy / glitchy, haven't had that with iphones. my new iphone has a maximum 60 hz refresh rate while my old android had a 90 hz refresh rate, but i honestly haven't noticed the difference as it just feels so quick to respond to my inputs.

i tried that, watched a video showing a guy dragging and dropping his music with itunes, didn't work for me as all my music is in FLAC format and i think itunes will only let you drag and drop if it's an mp3.

                      • @[Deactivated]: Sounds like you've only ever had crappy budget Android devices, which is exactly how android gets a bad reputation.
I'm not lying when ive not had any issues on any of my flashship android phones since probably way back in Note 4/Galaxy S4 days when apps crashed sometimes.
Only exception is the Pixel 6 pro i had, when it was released the software was bad never glitchy though just bugs like Wi-Fi disconnects and reconnects when waking the phone up but these where fixed very quickly.

My iPhone 13 pro max has had way more issues software wise than i expected.
refresh rate issues that ive mentioned before plus ive had this thing the other day where i couldn't press back buttons for apps but swiping and scrolling worked fine, had to restart the phone to get it working again.

iTunes doesn't support FLAC, only way to play FLAC on iPhone from my quick googling is with the files app otherwise youve had to convert your music files to ALAC Apples proprietary FLAC format.

                    • +1

@Axelstrife: Yeah Alasdair definitely shouldn't be checking the benchmarks. Cos, y'know, Samsung caught throttling 10,000 phone apps—and its own home screen

      • Not if you can get it half price on launch day like me lmao
It's not hard for any consumer to do.

    • +10

No, they're announcing their closure on Wednesday morning. Michael Dell issued the order earlier today.

    • This proves my point.. only 6 negs.

  • +1

    New iPad Air coming apparently..

    • Current model is almost 2 years old. This is a near certainty.

      • egads.. 2yrs old??? how can it still function!

        • If it's for sale today it will be supported until at least 2027. That said, for tech 2 years without releasing a newer model is a very long time.

      • No it’s not. Released oct 20. Not even 1.5 years old yet.

  • +1

Macbook with M2? Maybe a Macbook Pro in the current old style case, but it you want to wait for the MacBook Air with M2 in pretty colours, come back in September or so.

  • I want an Apple TV with M1.

    • Bring back Front Row!

Seriously, it would be 'trivial' to port tvOS now that they're running on the same chips. There are already a bunch of HTPC enthusiasts out there that would buy a Mini for this.

  • If they're releasing the upgraded Mac Mini, they better also have an external display story to go with it.

An 'affordable' Apple-made display is the one thing to complete my setup.

    • Apple dont do displays, they realise like many other manufacturers that there are many different needs for displays, so leave those to the display companies.

Then those who want "affordable" can choose whatever they define as such. Its going to be different for many people.

      • +2

There are displays that you literally cannot buy. High-DPI screens (>218 PPI) don't exist outside of the LG 5K Ultrafine.

Apple design and contract out the manufacture of all their displays (obviously) - none of it is off the shelf. It's just that none of it is standalone (except the XDR), but all in a product like the iMac, iPad, MacBooks, etc.

Us Apple enthusiasts just want a matching display for the mini-LED, 254 PPI, 120hz, 1600-nit display that's in our MacBook Pros. You literally cannot buy anything even remotely close to it for any price.

      • This comment didn’t age well.

    • You're hoping for an affordable display from the company who charges $1049 for some wheels, $1700 for a stand or $349 for a VESA mount?

The Mac Mini is their idea of an affordable Mac and it ships with nothing because of that; no keyboard/mouse, no display, just the Mac Mini.

      • Oh I put 'affordable' (in quotes). The XDR at $9k isn't that, but 2-4K is swingable.

Also, everyone loves to point out the stand and wheels, but they're the exception that kinda proves the rule: they're niche accessories for very expensive products (XDR and Mac Pro). VESA mount is a gouge though.

        • No one is going to read this: I've ordered a Studio Display.

  • Probably airpods mini

  • Waiting for an M2 Air with a nice array of colours here. Will be my first OSX device, and first Apple product since 2016! I'll see how it goes with my Windows PC and Samsung phone lol.

  • Any chance of new MacBook air with more ports? Or even just MacBook air with 2 USB C and MagSafe?

    • +2

Not yet. More likely September or later for MacBook Air refresh.

  • I would be disappointed if there was a price increase for the se considering rumoured minimal changes but I wouldn’t be surprised.

  • That new SE is going to sell very well and will interest many people who dont care about screen size and like their current iphone 7-8 but want something that will last them another 5-7 years with a much better camera and a MUUUCH better processer.

When the 2020 SE was launched, Costco launched it with pricing $30-$40 under RRP, and a couple of months later you could get them from Big W's ebay page for $50 off. Hoping for similar deals soon to bring the pricing closer to $675 entry.
