Buy discount GC from Coles/Woolworths (make sure to buy the $500 version as there is a limit of how many cards you can use per transaction).

- Buy 10% Giftcards from Coles/Woolies, and buy new phones from
JBHifi - Buy 15% giftcards from Coles (black friday sales), and buy new phones from JB.
- Wait till 14 is out, 13 will be on sales.
Cheapest, wait till Nov, buy 15% off giftcards, buy 13 after 14 is released ;-)

Can’t claim the GST back anymore when travelling. They’ll record the serial number and charge you the tax when you bring it back in. From TRS website:

I think it might be cheaper if you buy it in-person in Japan. You don't pay tax, they stamp the receipt into your passport. And you are supposed to pay for it in customs when you fly in, but it's somewhat of a loophole since they don't check it well. And I believe you'll still get local Apple support/warranty.
Not sure how much you save, but it might be the cost of a discounted ticket.
So could be worth it depending on the person.
