Excellent pruning saw, cuts quickly and leaves a very smooth finish. Can be used for construction work as well.

Fits snugly in the long thigh pocket of Hard yakka work pants.

The rating is brought down by a 1-star review, probably caused by misuse. I've used mine for about two years without issues.

    But will it kill?

    • +1

The reddit comment that got me on to silky saws was something along the lines of "great to keep in the car if you need to clear a fallen log or dismember a body"

The saw is still wicked sharp after two years of use as a gardener, and you can buy replacement blades.

      • +2

I second this! Haven't come across a fallen log yet though..

        • +1

…but bodies…dozens of them, still razor sharp.

    • +2

this blade …. will not keel

  • Thanks for this. I have been looking for a decent hand saw for miscellaneous sawing (Christmas trees, bonsai, makeshift carpentry, etc.) This looks great.

    • +1

I did actually take this one around the country a while ago and it does cut super nicely and stays sharp for very long, bought a spare blade too but still haven't had to use it.

    • +1

Only thing to keep in mind is the teeth are quite coarse, it wouldn't be good for really fine work. Certainly for carpentry it would be fine. Anything around 5mm thick or less tends to get a little caught in the teeth.

They do sell different coarseness blades/saws too.

      • Should be perfect then. Occasionally need to do big cuts in my bonsai (5-10 cm thick) so will be perfect for that. For everything else there are more precise bonsai specific tools that I already own. Then I have been using a hacksaw for everything else lately and it has been incredibly painful. Needed this upgrade.

these come highly recommended by many camping/survival gurus on the internet, I've got one and it puts away timber like nothing else I've seen for the size and weight. Handy for pruning the lemon tree too.

Been using it about a year and it still cuts just as well as it did the day it arrived. Would definitely recommend.

    • yep. Corporal's Corner sold me on them

The price history at the camels is wild.

It is indeed. Unfortunately my timing was poor, pulled the trigger at 18.8k, so this deal at around $50. Bargain.

Sounds like my crypto buying form.

  • Where to get spare blades?

    • Forestry tools in NSW

The silky range of saw blade are high quality and can be hand sharpened. Cheaper than buying a new blade?

  • OP might want to mention these are made in Japan

  • Are the blades quite strong and don't bend too much? I'm looking for something portable to clear branches and small fallen trees from mountain bike trails

    • the blade does flex a bit, but not on the cutting stroke seeing as its a Japanese pull saw.

  • I have one and think it's great.
In case it hasn't been mentioned the saw cuts on the pull stroke. Which I find to be much easier and requires very little effort to cut even thick branches

  • So many positive reviews from Ozb but bad reviews on Amazon. If I just stumbled across it, I wouldn't get it based on 2.4/5.

    • +1

I don't know the mechanism of amazon review system. It says 4 global rating and the result is 2.4/5. I think 4 rating is useless. The review in Amazon US is 4.8/5 bases on 1042 global ratings. I guess I can trust that one.

Considering they are recommended by a lot of industry professionals that rely on them for a living. I would put that as confirmation of their quality over some weekend warriors on Amazon?

    • Go watch youtube videos and see it in action.

It's easy to write negative reviews. but watch it in action cutting thick tree branches and decide for yourself if the saw is good enough.

If you are lazy to watch videos. I can summarise and tell you they are pretty much all very positive and show how easily this cuts.

  • Used one.of these for camping. It is great, sharp and compact.

However doing some yard work the blade snapped in half, it was jammed and I yanked it out and snapped. You will find they will not replace this and they have a document around warranty on it. Note I was not misusing it.

I since use a cheap Bunnings bow saw, fiskars I think, whilst bulky cuts much faster and cheap to replace.

      Pick one, not both.

      • Comedian.

The point is it has a fragile, but flexible, blade. Use with care.

The fact they have a FAQ on it means it occurs frequently.

  • I would recommend the silky zubat fixed blade saw at about twice the price .

I wouldn't recommend pulling whilst twisting or bending any hardened steel blade that was "stuck" though.
(Especially not this entry level silky folding saw by the sounds of it.)
