What Is The Cheapest Way to Get NSW to Victorian Car Registration

Good afternoon all,

I am buying a car off my sister (NSW). I've got the car, now just need to sort out registration and transfer her whatever she thinks is a fair price for the car.

I was wondering what the cheapest way to get Victorian registration would be? I have only been living in Victoria for ~8 months and from my understanding you need a vehicle check or similar before transferring registration?

Someone else has also told me that SA do really cheap / lenient registrations?

What's the cheapest/most convenient options for me moving forward?
I've found a pretty decent mechanic who I can trust in Melbourne

Cheers

Get a road worthy certificate, then go to VicRoads within 30 days and transfer the rego to your name.
    There isn't another method.

You'll need to get a Certificate of Roadworthiness which is ~$150-200 assuming no repairs need to be made. Not all mechanics can perform the RWC check.
You'll need to bring the items in Step 3 of the link.
You'll need to book an appointment with VicRoads to register the vehicle - $19.20.
At the appointment, you'll need to pay for the registration, plates, stamp duty and transfer costs of the car. You can calculate this using the Initial Registration Fee Calculator in the link. You can choose between 3, 6 or 12 months of registration to cut your upfront cost down.

  • Check why you need to do to register the car on the Viicroads website.

Unfortunately there aren’t many hacks to make registering a car cheaper.

While you can get a refund on unused rego, you may be able to save a little by keeping t registered in NSW until it expires then transferring to your name. That will partly depend on wether nsw rego will be cheaper than vic (unlikely).

Note: don’t play with not transferring rego unless you really trust each other.

I'd transfer it to your name in NSW if possible and then register it in Vic. You won't need a RWC if it's registered in NSW in your name.

You should receive the credit back for the un-used portion of the rego from NSW.

A pink slip is $40(?) and they really only check to make sure it has four tyres, it can go and slow, you have seatbelts and you can see at night. A RWC is a full check of your car, I think they were $250 (I could be wrong on that figure). But I avoided the RWC by having my car registered to me in NSW before changing to Vic. My licence was still in NSW at the time.

You won’t need a RWC if:

    • the vehicle is currently registered in your name interstate, and is going into the same name in Victoria, AND
    • the interstate vehicle registration is still current or not expired by more than three months.

    • Yeah, only applies if you still hold nsw licence.
