Verbatim DVD-R and +R Printable 50 Pack - $11.20 on Clearance at Woolworths

260

I picked these up on the 24th April at a Victorian Woolworths store.
I cannot confirm if this is nationwide and I couldn't get a photo of the clearance tag.

The DVD-R (http://www.verbatim.com.au/en_AU/products/bluray-dvd-cd--dvd…) are MCC 03RG20 (http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia/verbatim-dvd-r-mcc-03rg20-…).
The DVD+R (http://www.verbatim.com.au/en_AU/products/bluray-dvd-cd--dvd…) are MCC…..004 (http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia/verbatim-dvd-r-mcc-004-16/…).
For those who don't know what this means, it describes the manufacturer and media production method (Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation), and these are very good!

MSY have these for $18, and the cheapest on staticice is $16.

Like I wrote…it's a clearance item so not advertised and I couldn't get a photo of the sticker!

  • That's a great price, thanks op!

  • +1

    Which woolies was it at?

  • Good deal but likely to be a store special.

  • I love the Verbatim DVD+R discs, very reliable. I gotta get me some of this. Hopefully the local Woolies has it. THANKS! :)

Tempting. how's verbatim's quality? I often use DVDs to store photos. Photos are my memories, I use SONY or Ritek discs.

    • Verbatim is often quoted as the highest quality DVDs (the ones made in Singapore or Taiwan)

      • thanks for the reply. I'll chck my local woolies today (if they open) :)

        • I always known Verbatim as the usually the best.

          May be untrue but.

If you want archival quality, go for Taiyo Yuden. You can buy them from Internet suppliers. And always keep more than one copy in any case.

http://www.jpldisplays.com.au/catalog/index.php?cPath=23 is where I used to buy mine…..

There are a lot of TY fakes about…. so be careful

        • Yes they are my supplier too.

      • I never heard of this brand Taiyo Yuden. But they do appear to have the best quality for archives,so will get some…
I now mainly use hard drives for my storage, especially for photos/home video as dvd's are just not big enough.
BUT Should I go back to dvd's for backup as they may be better? (just time consuming and inconvenient…?

The difference between MCC and TYG is as near as makes no difference. Often it's simply the drive that will favour one media over another in jitter tests, access times and burst rates.

        See this in-depth review: http://www.cdrinfo.com/sections/reviews/Print.aspx?ArticleId…
One drive has Taiyo Yuden decisively besting MCC, another drive has it completely the opposite.
The only really noticeable trend is that TYG is still stable and offers good burn quality even when pushed beyond 16x (but anyone who actually writes to media at above 16x is rather ill-informed to begin with).

Certain stand-alone players can be slightly finicky about accepting TYG as well.

The only real difference between TYG and MCC (as long they're genuine) is that MCC can come from 4 different plants so you are slightly more predisposed to getting a bad batch as opposed to TYG which should be Japanese or Taiwanese, but that's offset by the ridiculously low price and widespread availability of Verbatim media these days.

Ritek? Come back in 1-2 years and see how much of your data is still readable. It's the worst brand you could possibly buy. Well, there is always Princo and other cheapies which are way worse.

Sony are hit n miss. Some batches are great. Some not.

Verbatims are my number 2 choice. Like others have said, Taiyo Yuden's are the best you can get, but only if you get authentic ones. So, if you can't get TY's, Verbatims are the next best thing.

    • The fact that you're asking if Verbatim are a reputable optical media brand suggest you don't really know enough to distinguish the differences in quality.

This might be a handy guide: http://www.digitalfaq.com/reviews/dvd-media.htm

Sony stopped making their own media in 2010 and have since gone downhill in reliability.

    • Also heard that Verbatim is the number 1 in quality when it comes to dvds

  • Which store did you go to?

    • Mill Park.

  • That is VERY cheap, though I wish they would sell non-printable DVDs. I'm one who writes with pen rather than printing (which I find a colossal waste of ink).

Because you can't write on a printable disc??? What is wrong with some people!?

      • Yes you can. But have you actually tried it? There's a lot of friction on the printable surface which makes your handwriting not natural and it comes out bad. Also, it looks ugly.

The non-printables have lines for you to write on. And it looks better.

        • Black marker also dries up quickly on that surface. It just wasn't meant for writing on.

        • Maybe you need a different sharpie? My green one works fine, although not as pretty, as you say, due to the surface.

Just went to my local Wollies in Keysborough to check these out. They had none in stock and no tag to confirm the price however there were a number of clearance tags for other similar products.

  • +1

Selected stores only. I went to a few Woolies stores and only 1 had them on clearance.

  • I saw some at the Safeway/Woolies I work at last Monday: Preston (VIC).

EDIT: Never mind, just rang up. They said they ran out. :(

  • Went to my local
    The price was $16.79
it was MARKED down $11.20 from $27.99

    • Same deal at my local woolies. $16.79

      • Same deal, went to my local woolies here in Syd it scanned for $16.79 shows 11.20 discount. Is the victorian price posted here is really 11.20 or the person posted the deal mistakenly put 11.20 the markdown amount..

        • Definitely paid $11.20 because it is on the receipt!

        • Maybe the store marked down wrongly in your favour or they keyed in the discount rather than the price?

        • +1

          Blaast,
Would be nice if you can scanned and post the receipt, which would helpful to us to show at our local woolies to get the price 11.20
          thanks.

        • Pricing Mistake when marking down.

Photo of the disks and clearance tags.
Looks like an error has been made because the 25 pack DVD+R are $10.19, save $6.80, whereas the 25 pack DVD-R are $6.80, save $10.19…

  • There are also 25 pack spindles for $6.80 if you can't grab any of the 50 packs

  • The best media are Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim and TDK. Forget the rest!

    • Up there with Princo 4x :p

Cheap media are fine for movies your reli will chuck after no viewing or two, or a software install disk that will be out of date in 6 months.
