Metroview is less than half this prce. Is this app that much better to justify to cost?

    • All have their positive and negatives. Metro view seems more basic missing functions like lane guidance etc

But it's really personal choice if you pay more for those features like cheap tomtom or expensive tomtom

    • +1 for Metroview
      http://itunes.apple.com/au/app/metroview-gps-navigation/id37…
Great app & only $14.99, l've been using it for well over a year & rate it.

    • Yeah this is too middle-ground, even at $50. On one hand there are cheaper options that work okay, and on the other hand TomTom isn't much more

I'd rather pay $75 for something I can be confident will work pretty well than $50 for something in between.

      BTW +1 for Metroview.

      • I agree. I used TomTom on a different mobile phone previously but have been using Navigon on iPhone for nearly 2 years. sometimes the Navigon routing or its map is not correct, such as making a right turn when it is not permitted or the route on M1 to the zoo - it always get it wrong with the multiple lanes on the freeway.
The "watch your speed" voice alert when coming to a variable speed zone or speed camera at adjacent road at junction is also very annoying. Then Navigon switched to chargeable FreshMap and no idea when the annual free map update will be provided.

Also waiting to buy TomTom when (and if) it is on discount.

  • Bought this ages ago during the ipad1 days but I don't remember it being this expensive.

  • ** Important Information Regarding Map Updates ***
Version 2.0 included a new map update feature called FreshMaps. FreshMaps is a premium service that NAVIGON adapted from their successful line of PNDs (personal navigation devices) in Europe, whereby for a fee, users can get the latest maps every three months for a period of at least two years. The introduction of this service into the app was planned prior to Garmin’s acquisition of NAVIGON.

Prior to the launch of FreshMaps, free map updates were provided on an irregular basis. In response to customer feedback, we will continue to deliver occasional free map updates, in addition to the optional FreshMaps service, which provides more regular and frequent (quarterly) map updates.

Another android user that cant read, there might be an App for that

    • +1

Google navigation is not bad. However, TomTom (iPhone) and Garmin (Android) have better routing.

Advanced Lane Guidance and Safety Camera Alerts are also handy. Not to mention some of those paid navigation apps show you the speed limit on screen and warns you when the car is over the speed limit.

Even if it had turn by turn navigation on iOS, there are some other limitations. The big one is the fact map data isn't pernamently saved to the device which requires the user to either have a pernamently data connection or to plan their routes in advance so they can be cached. Due to that, something such as this app may be more reliable for a lot of users.

For my iPhone I personally use TomTom. On my Android handset I have Sygic mobile which I use despite the free Google Maps being there. Still use google maps for quick lookups though.

      • the route can be precached before you start your route, or you can precache an area.

Either way its difficult to be without any phone reception for over 30 seconds.

        • Yes, I mentioned that. But if you start in an area with no reception and didn't plan ahead, you're out of luck.

I'd imagine it's very easy to be without reception for more than 30 seconds depending on where you are.

        • You would be suprised how much of Australia is covered with network towers.

        • That's all good and well, but there are areas not covered or not covered by a specific carrier. I've hit them and I'm sure others have also.

I've been using Navigon on my Galaxy S2 instead
of my TomTom lately. It's quite accurate. I've been going to a lot of rental properties in the northern suburbs and it has worked 99% of the time. The 1% is when it told me to make a turn that wasn't allowed and rare occasions when I go to the cbd (Syd) where signal gets interrupted by the tall buildings. I use Google nav on short distances. It's really not reliable.

I have had this for about 18 months and IMO it is absolute rubbish. I would not recommend it at all. It had taken us 'for a ride' so many times. We use tom tom now and we find it much better. Don't waste your money on this one like we did.

I hate this so much i used it the first time in sydney on my galaxy s2 and it kept telling me to do a u-turn in the m5 tunnel and on the dual carriageway when i was already on the home stretch for canberra. Then it changed its mind about which road we were on. Prior to entering the M5 tunnel it tried to lead us on a multiple tour of the block avoiding/circling the entrance to the tunnel. It kept telling us to take non existant turns. I wanted to throw my phone into direct traffic but realised hey its not your fault, its that darned app.
It doesn't even tell you which lane to be in!
BETTER OFF GETTING THE <$99 GARMIN NUVI40 WITH LIFETIME UPDATES FOR FREE. You don't waste the battery and its ui is more friendly.
Dont rely on it in unfamiliar environments. rookie mistake but still they say its like a gps. still good for short distances/familiar areas.

Mine was free on the galaxy

Then it changed its mind about which road we were on.

were you using the female voice ?

    • Dont rely on it in unfamiliar environments

      What use is it then?

      • I think that is the point

  • Tomtom for iPhone + Tomtom car kit, YGWYPF, IMO this is the best, especially in urban areas when you find yourself stuck in complicated road areas.

    • are the map updates free on the Tomtom app ?

      • Yes. Live traffic is a paid update though.

    • i've been finding some routing issues with Metroview, so am looking for an alternative…

    • TomTom is probably the best at the moment (for iOS). You get annual map updates like Navigon. However, TomTom stopped supporting iPhone 3G so if you have one of them, you are stuck with an old map. This is a worry because… does that mean when iPhone 6 comes out, TomTom will do the same to 3GS and 4 users?

TomTom has better routing and the voice guidance is good. Instead of just turn right at ABC street, it tells you: turn right at ABC street and keep left (coz. later on your car will need to turn left). I found it handy when I go to new places.

don't bother mate, it is really slow to start up, I have tomtom, sygic, navigon, and navfree on my Iphone 4 and Navigon used to be the best but now it is the slowest of all and takes ages to route. It does not give an option to the user if they would like to take a toll road or avoid it,

  • Yes. Live traffic is the only paid upgrade from memory. I use TomTom and feel no need for the TomTom car dock though, the phones GPS works fine. It's not a bad dock, but it wouldn't have worked with my case so I got a standard one.

Edit: oops… this was a response to JV above asking if TomTom map updates were free.

  • This software came free with my Samsung tablet.

    • That one is a slightly cut down version. Does not mean the iOS version is much better though.

For iOS, if cost is an issue, wait for MetroView to have another sale. Otherwise, TomTom is the best. TomTom also have sales from time to time, but only once or twice a year.

      • Afaik it's 100% full version. Available for free on all samsung galaxy devices ftw.

Works great on my sgs1, however I agree with the poster a couple of posts above, that very rarely it asks you to do illegal turns and crap (pretty much only in the city, where the rules are a lot more complicated).

I bought the fixed speed camera package for 10 bucks too, that has probably saved me the price many times over lol.

If the IOS version is the same, I wouldn't buy it for $50, maybe $10 or $20 max.

  • Go with Metroview you don't really need lane guidence, I have both on my iphone and Never user Navigon anymore.
and for some reason its not as accurate as metroview. I use metroview with tom tom cradle works a treat. but if your on telstra you don't even need the cradle

    • it "works a treat" most of the time, but more and more lately, it's been sending me on a wild goose chase…

only a few weeks ago, we were driving up near Arthur's seat and on a few occasion, it was trying to make us drive through closed fire access roads, which are obviously only for emergency vehicles… wasted lots of time back tracking…
