they are just doing this so they dont have to price match dicksmith

    • you mean, the "We'll beat it by 5%!"

  • -2

Within months with the iPad mini release these will be $149.00

  • Buy GoodGuys giftcards with a 20% saving = $159 8gb touch

Good price but the iPod Touch is getting a little long in the tooth.

    • Old but good. Plus its had a few revisions…

      • +1

it really hasn't much of an update since 2010

    • +1

It's due for an upgrade in September.

I'm not sure what they can do to improve it. It's already got a retina display, albeit a cheaper version than the iPhone's.

The camera is shitty, so I guess they could upgrade that. Maybe a new processor and more memory?

      • +3

More memory is the main thing. With rumours that the iPod Classic is getting dropped, they really need to step it up to 128g or add a SD slot (lawl right)

      • i dont know how large or how heavy a GPS chip could be, but having one in an iPod Touch would work wonders. Especially with all of those geographical centred apps (urbanspoon, maps etc.)

For the camera, they should upgrade it, then again they removed the camera in iPod Mini's transition from bar size to square. I would think that they would at least make video 1080p when upgrading the camera.

  • Does anyone know if any app that works on Iphone, would work on iPod Touch?
If that's the case, it's a cheap way to have access to iphone apps without paying few hundred for it.
I use an android phone and don't like replacing it with an iphone if i can use an ipod Touch instead.

    • That's what I bought mine for - an iPhone without the phone - as they say.

It's missing the GPS stuff and the display doesn't look as good as an iPhone. The camera is crap. But otherwise it's functionally the same as an iPhone - without the phone bit.

You only get about 6GB of user storage on the 8GB version, and if you get app-happy like me, you'll fill it fast.

If I was buying mine again, I'd get at least a 16GB version.

      • Thanks Chris, I only need it for a few apps.

Had a chat with Paypal Merchant services rep, he told me that their focus was on iphone & ipad, and android devices would get their app at a later stage.

        https://www.paypal.com/au/webapps/mpp/credit-card-reader

It would be great if this Paypal Card reader would work with Ipod Touch and a pocket wifi modem.

    • Most iphone apps (that don't use telephone or gps capabilities) should work on iPod.
I'm developing a game for iOS and I'm going to buy it as a cheap alternative to iPhone. Hopefully for $135 from the Good Guys :)

    • i bought another itouch to jailbreak and use as a phone with the skyroam gmate device. cheap iphone! ;)

Current iPod is launched on Sep 2010, revised to include a white colour on Oct 2011, so it is technically 600 day-old :) i believe it has an A4 chip in it, good light weight apps and media player especially FaceTime and iMessage :P

    • no A4 chip!

    • +1

If you are talking about iPod Touch, the current generation does have the same A4 chip as iPhone 4 (maybe clocked at a lower speed).

It is still the most cost effective i-device (8GB one) to enjoy iOS apps/games. Considering you have to pay nearly double to get a prepaid iPhone 3GS here, iPod Touch has a better screen, and better CPU than 3GS.

It will be hard to jailbreak the current batch coz. they run iOS 5.1.

      • Netsurfer do you think it would work with this?
        https://www.paypal.com/au/webapps/mpp/credit-card-reader

It would be the cheapest Eftpos terminal.

        • Should work. According to the iTunes site for the app, http://itunes.apple.com/au/app/paypal-here/id505911015?mt=8, iPod Touch is supported. The hardware dongle uses the headphone/microphone jack. You do need Internet Access (so unless the place you intend to operate this has wifi, you will need a pocket wifi - probably a Telstra one).

If you are happy with the price of iPod Touch ($169), it is probably the cheapest device to do what you want soon (Paypal hasn't released it yet - not officially), until Paypal ported the app to Android. Paypal fee is $0.30 + 2.4% of the total price per transaction.

        • Short term gain = cheap terminal.

Long term loss = Paypal's daylight robbery charges.

      • DS website says there is iOS 4.1

      • i upgraded mine to 5.1 and did the jailbreak with redsn0w. too easy. but because it's a "tethered jailbreak", every time you have to boot it, it will have to be done with redsn0w's "just boot" feature otherwise the jailbreak and safari won't work properly.

    • I would debate it as a media player, specially with video it's format limited, but the price is good.

  • Thanks Netsurfer, that's great.
I already have a pocket wifi, all I need is an Ipod Touch.
According to Paypal rep, the service will be launched in 6 to 8 weeks, maybe I should wait till the service gets launched before buying an Ipod.

    • That would be safer except the iPod Touch sale will probably end before then so you will need to pay another $20-$30 more.

OfficeWorks and Apple (Apple will price match a legit retailer's price) both offer good services. Apple have 14 days money back guarantee and they don't ask anything when you want to return their products. Probabaly the same with Officeworks, but cannot remember how many days (either 7 or 14, probably 14 as well).

Since it is for work / company, you can expense it and $20-$30 probably isn't going to make a huge difference.

  • If you're looking for a larger size (32GB). Dicksmith has the 32GB one for $308 with a bonus logitech ipod dock speaker worth $49 on logitechshop (or as stated in catalogue $128).
