(PSA) Funimation Is Dead. Long Live Crunchyroll

https://blog.funimation.com/2022/03/01/funimation-content-mo…

From 1 March 2022, all Funimation shows and stuffs move to Crunchyroll.

No more new shows on Funimation but will continue to update existing shows (like my current favourite My Dress-Up Darling).

FAQ here. https://help.funimation.com/hc/en-us?utm_medium=email&utm_so…

On the question of "Should you cancel Funimation?". it didn't answer directly other than saying you should subscribe to Crunchyroll soon.
For those who never had Crunchyroll subscription, Funimation users will get a 60 free days trial code by 8 March 2022.

Well… that's a saving of $72!

My only concern is the potential loss of news about anime in Australia like the recent "Belle" and "Sing a Bit of Harmony".

  • And here I am with subscriptions to both already.

    • Same. But I don't think I can get partial refunds from Funimation.

  • Funimation buys out AnimeLab then consolidates it to Funimation. Now this happens.

Kinda sad. Though with Sony now owning both, it was only a matter of time before they all became one. Hopefully less competition doesn't lead to negative impacts in this space.

Would be nice if they included a Crunchyroll subscription in PS+

  • I just find it funny how Crunchyroll started as a pirate website and now it's the worlds largest media platform of it's genre worth billions.

    • +2

I am finding it ironic for a website that started as a pirate website then claimed "Image Removed Due to Copyright Issues".

      • It was the threats of being sued that got them in contact with the big publishers in the first place. It all started from there.

  • Does this mean crunchyroll will get the English dubs?

What do you mean by this? They both had theatrical releases in Australia. And JJK0 is getting a release in 2 weeks.

    • Yes. They were announced by Funimation. Without it, I wouldn't have known about these movies premiering in Australia.

With the merging with Crunchyroll, being an US-Centric provider, I am afraid we may no longer getting anime news or developments such as this.

Well one would think that "Madman Anime" or "FunimationANZ" on socials should be handling that sort of news.
They will very likely end up renaming and merging social media pages Crunchyroll Australia/New Zealand etc and having it's own local arm.
If there was no reference in any emails or website/social media then let them know. Some of the social media people where really helpful in the past but others not so much.

    Taken from FunimationANZ on facebook:
"By the end of March, you will be able to find 80% of our titles on Crunchyroll."
Does that mean 20% will be moving in April or just be expiring? (thinking face)

I haven't exactly cared about Anime for years now. I threw out something like 200 titles in the last kerbside collection about half went to the local charity store. The rest went to the kerb and went pretty quick. Maybe I had good taste after all lol.

    • The other 20% will have expiring licenses that won’t be renewed. Typically a minimum guarantee lasts for 5 years and the option to renew is negotiated after that.
