Get either a Hikvision or Dahua setup. Rock solid and don't have to worry about recharging batteries or lag that the more consumer level systems have.

Fairly common setup is 6 x Hikvision AcuSense/ColorVu cameras, 7608NI NVR, KD8003 video doorbell. For Dahua look into their TiOC/Wizsense camera range.

Not 100% sure on cloud storage for Hikvision/Dahua, but mobile playback from HDD is very smooth.

Installation pricing would depend on house type (e.g. 1/2 storey) and ease of wiring. Shop around and find a well reviewed licensed security installer with Australian stock (not grey market). There are plenty around and a fair bit of variance on pricing.

Gonna be a challenge, 6 cam's worth of data

All these six cameras facing outside?

  • Few more details like if its 1 or 2 storey house, if you prefer wireless setup or wired setup, maximum distance you want to cover with your camera, desired quality of the recordings, and if you are considering DIY or hiring an electrician or cabler for the installation would be handy.
Also, what do you mean by night TV?

    • Single storey, Wired is better for me. I have lived in a larger place and 6 were adequate. Neighbours have own cams.

I would like to weigh both sides(DIY vs Pay). I used to Install computer/Assemble them many moon ago but wife may object me making holes in this new home.

Not sure why I wrote Night TV. I wanted to write Day and IR camera.

If you prefer wired cameras, consider getting a Dahua or Hikvision cameras with NVR as evol suggested. You can then simply run ethernet cable between your NVR and the Camera for both power and data. With this setup, all your recording will be stored on your NVR. With the right setup, you can also access the recordings on your phone while you are away. Resolution of recordings, and HDD size on the NVR will decide how many days of continous (or event based) recording you can have on your NVR. If you want high resolution recording, this is your option. This option requires some technical knowledge to configure your system.

If you have a NBN/data closet, you can place your NVR there and install a wall plate that connects to each camera (on the eaves of your home if you want). You can then simply run ehternet cables between the port of the wall plate and NVR device that supports POE.

Although running ethernet cable seems harmless, as licensed cabler is required to run them under the law. So in my case, i purchased the camera myself and hired a licensed electrician/cabler to install them. If you want to engage a cabler, since your home is 1 storey, it should only take couple of hours plus materials (cables, wall plates, etc).

  • A lot of Reolink options available. Get the ones with AI detection.

    My recommendation is the:
    reolink rlk8-820d4a

Add in 2 more cameras to this kit and you will have 6, the DVR is an 8 channel DVR and then get a qualified installer to get CAT6 ethernet cables and to install it. Usually you would be looking around $120-150 per camera.

  • Would synology surveillance station be any good for use with Reolink cameras or would you recommend getting a stand alone NVR?

Reason I am asking is I already own a synology NAS and might look at buying a few extra cameras instead.

    • Synology - two free camera licences then $50 each thereafter. Disregard I answered my own question.

  • Reolink

  • If you've got a decent budget, I'd go for a Ubiquiti setup.

  • please keep us updated on what you get and pricing, I am also looking.

    some companies I considered:
    RACV CCTV from $1317 https://www.racv.com.au/in-your-home/home-security.html
    Jim's Security systems from $1795 https://jimssecurity.com.au/

      • 2 mega pixels is very blurry (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgZtjfjJ4eM)

do they have atleast 4 mega pixel cameras?

      • Looks really suss. No brand or model numbers specified? 1080P 2MP was good maybe 8 years ago? Probably some really cheap China kit marked up a ridiculous amount.

For reference, a pretty good Dahua 6x 6MP camera kit with 2TB NVR will only set you back $1,220 supply only

        • I am not marking anything suss or non suss. All I am doing is getting prices and options. I know that Dahua and Hikvision are big ones. I may just get the cabling done and do the res by myself.

  • Do you have to get specific nvrs for a brand of camera, or can you mix and match?

    • I don't have anything specific in mind. I saw a Landlord install something that was connected to HDMI (TV) and also had mobile app monitoring. This was 4 years ago. But recently I saw one which had a camera in doorbell and a 10" screen to see who is in front of it. This is from 4 weeks ago.

  • Noticed a few people mentioned reolink, these are great during day time but just be aware that they need manual configuration to work well at night and rely on their IR lights to see properly at night, which means you won't get license plates etc.
