  • Any feedback for this compared to Wyze outdoor camera? It seem Wyze outdoor gets mixed review unlike their indoor camera.

    • +1

Hard to buy Wyze locally though.

  • +3

    Absolute bargain, thanks OP.

Not expecting these to be amazing but two wireless cameras for <$100 is pretty good.

Good timing as we had someone sniffing around cars and houses in our street last night.

    • +3

Had my car stolen last week, apparently it is on the rise, it's meant to be a TikTok trend or something where little shits are going for joyrides, lock up people.

      • +1

Sorry to hear about that mate, I bloody hate thieves.

        What city / suburb?

        • Sydney, South West

        • That's funny, because I absolutely LOVE thieves.

          • @MassEffect: Money Hiest?

            • +2

@vwrite: Remember: I before E, except after C, unless it sounds like A.

      • +1

Oh ye time for a tiktok trend where we dish out vigilante justice to these little shits

  • +5

    Sound like decent cameras but.
Seriously wireless is a pain to recharge constantly? Yes they are easier to installed any where

    • +4

I work from home so it's very low effort to grab them and recharge every few weeks (or however long they last)

    • +2

yeah, you do it for the ease of install. Also the amount of sensitivity or active recording time would dramatically affect the battery life. So you'd use it and put up with the inconvenience of charging to save like a few hundred in installation charges (eg. getting an electrician to run cables).

    • +3

I agree. Why bother having to climb and recharge these regularly, knowing that battery degradation will only get worse and worse? And that the devices try to go in to low power mode to conserve battery so are sluggish at tasks etc.

Better just just install a wire and you never need to worry about it again and it can operate 24/7 at full power with no degradation.

      • +2

Exactly my thought. Not worth it in the long run. Keep recharging just plain pain in the rear and not to mention batteries die

        • +8

          Good for rental properties though

        • +1

there would only be good for indoor where you can grab it and charge it easily.

      • +4

Degradation will be imperceivable over the lifespan of these… 1 charge cycle every couple of months (compared to a mobile phone that is charged every night) is nothing.

    • +3

Once in a couple of months may not sound much, but it will quickly become a chore. Batteries will run low at the most inconvenient time, then you will have to decide to go out or to re-plan your activities while the batteries are charging. And one more thing you have to check before going away on a trip, and not to forget to re-install the batteries after charging.

Also heat and humidity will shorten battery life.

A wireless system is still good for temporary setups, but not so much long term.

    • +9

I picked one of these up. I set one in front of the front door with move detect and notifications on and the other with move detect covering the driveway. They last about 1 week before needing a charge. Though the driveway one lasted a few days longer.

    • +2

My Eufy cams all last 8 or so months between charges, and it isn't hard to add a cheap solar panel to them.

    • +1

I have the Eufy cam version and I just plug the power into a small regulated solar panel and it stays pretty much fully charged. So far I have only done this for one of my cameras to see how it goes - has been great so far.

      • would love to know if there are solar panels that work with the Xiaomi.

      • +2

That's clever! Can you link to the solar panel you bought?

        • +1

I got one of these - was on offer for US$11.11 at the time:

          https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32848088830.html?spm=a2g0o.p…

I ran a small bead of silicone sealant around the top and side edges of where the regulator attaches to the back of the panel as a way of giving it a little more weatherproofing for sitting on a wall exposed to occasional rain (it is below an eave but in full sun for the morning and early afternon only)

    • I wish I could bypass the battery so that I’d feel better having it attached to a power source 24/7 - not too keen on having a battery constantly charging :(

  • +15
    • +2

bloody annoying that they constantly disconnect and then you have reset it every single time.

      • +1

same here, used to have one of these camera and a base but network connection is really bad, not sure what happened but always have to reset for it to be stay connected. Also the resolution is bit on the down side, well, i guess it is cheap for a reason.

    • +2

Like everything Xiaomi — software is unreliable poop.

Have various Xiaomi products including cameras and not one works without some sort of software issue that becomes annoying fast.

  • +3

Yes 'up to 120 days' at first. Battery degrades, just like a Ring doorbell that I have, it was initially a few months, then every 2 months, then monthly, then it barely holds a few days. This is after about 2 years of use.

Battery technologies are still yet to have a break through. Wired will still have to dictate for now.

  • +3

disconnect issues always occur. buyer buyer beware!

  • -2

    Can't go wrong for $100.

    • Godspeed

  • +1

Wish if they had a mains 240v version.

    • +1

Agree, currently changing batteries daily on my current Xaomi doorbell. Very close to throwing it out

      • +1

Don't tell me that you are just standing there very close to the front door waiting for that moment to throw it out …? Just do it already, you will feel at ease afterwards.

        • Yep, just done it. Feel much better. Thanks mate

  • +9

These are utter garbage. Save your $$$.

    • +2

thank you, you stopped me from purchasing

  • +1

I can't imagine they will do well in our heat or weather.

35+ degrees. Let alone how they will survive on 40+ days. Maybe last a couple of hours, soak in the heat slowly throughout the day and kill the battery.

  • +2

problem with the battery cams is the rated battery life is based on seldom activation. not to mention the degradation over time. if you want to check up on the footage often or have many triggers it will deplete battery faster. i used to have those but will pay for a proper wired cctv set up with 24hr recording in the future

  • Anything on their ebay shop for the same price ?

  • +6

A lot of comments here are (fairly) criticising the "120 day" battery life claim, but there's a much more important reason why you should avoid battery cameras and go with wired power if possible.

The reason these cameras can have weeks of battery life is that they go in to a deep sleep mode and only keep the PIR sensor alive. Then when the PIR sensor detects motion it wakes the camera and starts recording. The problem is that it takes time for the camera to wake up. So it's possible that by the time the camera has woken up and started to record, the knave stealing parcels from your doorstep has already turned around to leave and you only get a video of the back of their head.

By comparison, cameras with a wired power connection are always awake and caching the video, so most models can actually add a pre-recording of a few seconds before the motion was detected.

This video demonstrates the problem well:

    • +1

Interesting, but still resolved by my 'sandwich' setup - cheap solar panel/battery/camera. Means I can mount it right up on the top of the roof and not worry about rain/wires into the roof or being stolen.

    • That's a problem for Arlo, Nest and all wireless cameras. Not everyone can run a wire/poe to all cameras around the house. And yep no thief is that fast to dash and be on his back in less than couple of seconds unless they are flash

      • +1

You dont have to be flash for this one not to activate. Just walk normal and it won't even notice you 😂

  • +1

Can these be connected to a solar panel like some of the Arlo cams?

    • No they can't

  • If you don't have an internet connection, can they still be used fine locally?

  • +9

My 20 cents experience with these.
I got mine from Catch from around $320 for 2 pack so 4x cameras. So I paid way above.

With the mi home app, if your location is mainland China ( you have to if you invested in the el chepo in home cube cameras from the 2017s), you can not use these cameras without changing region to Australia. If you also happen to have Xiaomi 0hone you can have dual app with one region to mainland China and another to Australia.

The camera battery last 5 weeks max on 30 second detection notification setting and 10 second recording length for 12 hr monitoring period for the day.

    Disconnection is an issue.

One of my camera has indicator led broken so no way to tell if the camera is on or now without going into the app. Within 6 months

They are a big annoyance for taking them out from the mounting and charging.

The mount on all cameras cracked during installation so I had to 3d print mine. Common problem.

Video quality is good but not great.

My opinion is to avoid these and better to invest in to wired solution. So you can just set and forget. It don't get Swann as my Swann cameras from 2014 broke within a couple of years.

For 100 buck and as in-home these could be great but I haven't tested that use case.

    • +1

Can any one share if this work while being charged? Or it stops working when charging?
When you say disconnection is an issue - disconnection from Wifi or Disconnection from base/Gateway?

      • Great point, was thinking the same thing.

Just plug a micro usb charger to power it. That'll resolve the most common recharging issue, if it operates normally whilst charging that is.

        • And if the answer is affirmative - then a solar panel can be used as well. Costs around $12-15.

          • +2

@vwrite: Yes they work while charging. (Plugged in to standard phone charger 5v 2amps

            • +1

@Godgodgod: Thank you for charging bit, if you can share the disconnection bit as well -
disconnection from Wifi or disconnection from Gateway/base?

              • @vwrite: Gateway loosing connection from wifi network. Once a month. But you don't realise until you manually check it. That is the most annoying bit. So when gateway loose wifi. The cameras will go on sleep if it can't find gateway within certain hours. So if you realise on second day, you may have to go to cameras and press the on button. If you managed to find that gateway has lost connection in time, you can wake the cameras from phone app.

          • @vwrite: Can you send me a link to such solution? Sound interesting , I want to implement it. (Solar panel for around 15 bucks)

            • +1

              @Godgodgod: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/313620593970?hash=item49053e7d32…

and u know it already where to find cheaper.

About loosing connectivity - this is bad. What I understand from your explanation is that it stops recording once disconnected from wifi.
I have Eufy, where my modem drops from internet but cameras remain connected to base via wifi. So when it comes online, I receive tons of notifications. So nothing missed. I have now used a smart plug with scheduled restart two times a day to keep modem awake. that solved the problem.

Was wondering, something like that can help you - I understand your issue is different to mine.

              • @vwrite: Thanks. I have it outdoors running on the battery so smart plug is out of question. Generally waking it from app before it's too late is not too bad.

            • @Godgodgod: I tried the cheap $15 panel and it discharged it. 😅

  • WOW! Awesome deal for less than $100.

I got 4 (2 + 2) of these cameras on sale last year. In terms of battery life, it really depends on where you place the camera and how often it detects movement. For example, 1 of my cameras needs to be charged every 2 weeks because of the placement whereas one of my other cmeras lasts for about 3 months off a single charge.

Video quality is great, app is easy to use however do not accept much technical support if you need it.. (only way to contact is via email).

    • I had no luck getting the 2nd camera installed !

The APP (iPhone) just won't allow the Add New Camera screen to stay long enough and goes to the already installed camera instead.
Tried on a few different devices. Same result.

I use Xiaomi for everything (40 devices, inc 11 other cameras !), so I am fairly used to the shortcomings of their APP, but this has me stumped..

      Any secret ?

  • +1

I assume these use a standard micro USB connection or something, is it as easy as getting a long cable to have it constantly charging and resolve most the issues except the connection issues?

    • yes it's micro USB charging

      • The charging port is in the worst possible place, (on the top of the camera, not the rear)

You wouldn't want a cable sticking out of it all the time.

  • 1080p, seriously what year is it

    • +1

I ask myself that question a lot.

  • Thanks OP

  • *** No power adapter included…

    • -1

Oh no! Nobody has spare micro USB adapters lying around!

  • +3

Still wouldn't waste my money on these even though they are nearly $100 cheaper than what I paid. Still waiting on warranty replacement of one camera and while waiting on that the other camera is faulty as well. Very disappointed

  • I think for internal uses (can point the camera outsidethru a window etc), with talk functions, motion detection etc, one of the better low cost way is to use the app Alfred Camera - turn your old phone into a camera. I have my old LG phone (on usb charging) pointed through a window toward the front of the house. Motion detection works really well and has a few seconds recording before the actual detection.

If you pay for the premium version (~$50 per year) you get 14 days of stored videos on the cloud and some other features.

  • On a related note, I have a security light that screws into a light fitting, it's Sengled Snap (link below). It is pretty unreliable, it uploads files to a site. I don't recommend it.
Can anyone recommend one that is similar that is reliable and preferably stores it locally?
    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/sengled-snap-hd-security-…

    • Bunnings sell a few of these type of lightbumb cameras

  • People are overlooking the fact that if you need a ladder to install these, then every month or so you need a ladder… Every time you do this you are risking a fall. I would say that alone makes these a deal breaker unless they are installed within arms reach on your tippy toes.

  • Bought a pair from pc byte last November. Now its back to where I bought it from. Was good for the first month but deteriorated very quickly.
Night time shots, you lose the person that activated the motion and looks like a ghost.
Battery from new only lasted 3 weeks on a low traffic area with minimal live viewing. Last month the cameras started losing connection to the gateway and needed to be factory reset every few days. I tried leaving the camera a few feet beside the hub and still disconnecting so I returned it. Connection is based on where the hub is. Check the imilab owners ec2 group on facebook and other reviews. Might as well get something better for the effort of putting it up.
