My total incl shipping - $361.08.

    Thanks.

  • Trying to determine if this or a i5-12500
I think my old 1055t cpu motherboard is dying as graphics card is starting to not be detected all the time unless power off and back on…. Different GPU same intermittent problem.
Or could be power supply I guess

I would probably go Intel at the moment if I needed a new motherboard. Should be able to upgrade to raptor Lake with the same motherboard.

      • +1

Agreed - Intel is the better choice at the moment, hence AMD are dropping their prices pretty hard. Personally, I'd just go with a 12400F - $289 and generally just much better value than this 5600X at $349.

        • +1

Now that cheaper Intel motherboards are out there I agree

          • +3

@Casomme: Was looking at the motherboard for Intel, basically nearly double price than AMD for micro ATX (looking to reduce my desktop size eventually when drives die) but not quite ready for a nuc

            • -1

@Encify: Wouldn't say they're double the price for feature parity.

              https://www.centrecom.com.au/msi-b660m-a-pro-ddr4-lga-1700-m…

This is good for $220 and would suit the 12400F perfectly. Similar B550 board from AMD will likely set you back maybe $150 or so.

You can find B450 boards for around $99 that are fine, but the feature set will not match the Intel B660 or AMD B550 boards, and there are some compatibility issues to be aware of.

      • Oddly enough always been an AMD person haha and the comparisons all seem to be basically 2-3% difference between the two CPU
So debating and looking to downsize CoolerMaster case… So looking at micro ATX board as don't need all the extra slots.

Mostly used for Plex.. Was going to but a second hand box, but for people are asking 250 for 8 year old machines… Best to get new for 550 as have everything else

Just need CPU, motherboard and ram now that ram prices are not stupid high now

12400f and a ddr4 mobo would be my recommend for an affordable drop in replacement.

I don't think there's a wrong choice, both will give you very similar experiences. To an extent that just makes it a price contest.

My own take is that with this price drop, if you're happy with a budget motherboard (whether for cost reasons or because the higher-end features are irrelevant for you) then AMD sneaks ahead, but once you get to the premium end where motherboard costs get much closer, the cheaper Intel CPU becomes the deciding factor.

This is because while I'd be comfortable running the Ryzen on something as basic as an MSI B550M Pro-VDH ($119 on Amazon at the moment), I have no confidence at the moment in the sub-$200 Intel boards and would want something like the Asus TUF for around $240 as the entry point. Feature-wise these two boards are very close other than the AMD one having bonus WiFi (albeit an older standard). So the AMD solution comes to around $470, the Intel one (using a 12400F) around $530, and the AMD will be marginally faster.

However, if you want a fully-loaded board instead, the calculus changes somewhat. The B550M Mortar vs the B660M Mortar for example has the price difference in motherboards down to $80 and shrinking. Similar when comparing the higher-end chipsets too, e.g. an X570S Tomahawk vs a Z690 Aorus Elite ax. In situations like that, paying a little more for the Intel solution to get the upgrade path to 13th gen (though realistically people rarely do drop-in upgrades for consecutive generations), and multiple PCI-E 4.0 M.2 slots in the B660 vs B550 case.

Thanks, was literally about to buy one today for $399.

    Money saved.

thanks op 354.90 with delivery for me

  • Is this worth paying extra over the 5600G? Does it have onboard graphics?

    • Yes because this has more cache but no integrated graphics.

    • +2

I would vote no and no…

    • +4

No onboard graphics with this one

    • +4

It's a bit of a trick question really because the CPUs cater to different markets. If you're relying on integrated graphics for gaming then there is no other option than the 5600G or 5700G, there is no viable alternative from either AMD or Intel.

If, on the other hand, you're going for a separate video card, the G-series not particularly competitive and you can do better for the price, either by paying the $30 more for the 5600X which is quite a bit faster and adds PCI-E 4.0 support, or by paying significantly less for something like a 11400 which sits between the two and still comes with the same perks.

      • Feels like it's been much more than a $30 difference for quite a while.
Also the 5600G just getting under $300 makes it significantly easier for any WFH PC claims, compared to depreciating the 5600X over years…

        • Yeah, just talking in the context of this particular deal. At $450 it was an impossible sell, and at $400 a somewhat difficult sell, but at $350 it's certainly competitive with just about any other solution above the budget 11400 price-point. And yeah, this is looking at it from a gaming lens primarily, because the fact that the 5600G is the question in the first place strongly hints at that.

(And yes, some pre-built sellers like BPCTech do include the 5600G in weird contexts which defeat its primary purpose, but they have different economies of scale compared to us end-users)

Finally got back to where it started. It was this price then suddenly everyone put it above to 450…some dropped it to 399. Now back to where it started.

  • Any reason to move from my i7 8700k?

    • +3

imo not worth switching mobo for small gains

    • No

  • Anyone went from 3600x to this cpu and if so, worth it?

    • +1

There was quite a decent IPC increase between generations, so the 5600X is a much better CPU. Off the top of my head, i can't recall fully but even clock rates should be better so that increases the gap. If it's in your price bracket and your bios supports it, then it's a nice upgrade.

    • +1

I went from 3600 to 5600x and better RAM. If you want more frames for 1440 or 4k, no.

If you want more productivity, it is an improvement, but the 3600x is decent.

    • I have two PCs, one is a 3600 and the other a 5600.
The 5600 is noticeably faster, but not fast enough to justify a $350 upgrade.

On the other hand, if you're building a new PC, then I'd buy the 5600, even though it's $100 more.

      • The 5600 is noticeably faster, but not fast enough to justify a $350 upgrade.

It's more like a $100 upgrade though, 3600 still going for $250 used.

  • I dont know which deal to pick haha nice find

  • +1
    • shows $375 for me

      • +1

        Well that was short-lived then…

    • It was $345 earlier today, I assume once Shopping Express ran out of stock they brought the price back up to $375.

  • Literally got one for 399 last week -.-

  • Scorptec has same price with free delivery

  • Can anyone recommend what cooler with RGB is best for this CPU and will work in a Thermaltake Tower 100 (https://www.pccasegear.com/products/53078/thermaltake-tower-…)

    BIG THANKS
