How to Get Electric Scooter Transported from Sydney to Hobart?

Hey people!

So while visiting Sydney I managed to snag 2 scooters from this deal: Segway Ninebot F20A Electric Scooter $299 @ ALDI

I was hoping to check it in at oversized luggage at Jetstar when I fly back to Hobart but unfortunately, due to the battery capacity, they will not allow it to be checked in.

I know nothing about getting it transported and was hoping somebody knows what would be the best (and economical) way of getting them to Hobart.

Thanks for the advice.

  • You'll want to use a courier but it probably won't be cheap. I had mine delivered via Toll as they were the cheapest for the store to use.

    • Have requested a quote from toll, waiting game now.

    • They are actually not the cheapest haha!

      • Haha TNT was the cheapest right? ;)

          Right right

          • @HanaLF: No, wrong. Just checked, Allied is the most cheapest….

  • One option is to ditch the battery and buy a new one at the new location.

      There's no Aldi in Tas.

Can you check the scooter without battery and courier the battery separately?

From what I understand, getting the battery out is not a simple task. But will consider this if a better option is not available.

        • Should try and snag a third one at the discounted price and the the profit you make from selling it will help pay for the shipping of all three :)

    You could ride it there?

Did consider this but do not have enough audiobooks for this ride.

  • What's the max capacity lithium battery you can have as carry on?

    • I'm not sure, but the escooter weighs over 14kg so will not meet weight restrictions.

  • Stick them on land freight and have them shipped down instead?

ask a friend with a ute / van if they can take them down on the spirit?

  • Sendle 2000 to 7000
15kg, 70l (rough estimate of folded size)
    $30 each

    Seems overly cheap to me.

    • I was excited when I first saw this as well but apparently it after talking to they said if I can transfer it to a smaller box that meets their standards than it's possible. But the lady wasn't sure about the battery as now than 160Wh is considered "dangerous" goods. She will get back to me but thinks it won't happen.

    • It's oversized. 1.2m in length

  • One way rental car?

    • Most rental car companies (e.g. Avis, Budget, Europcar) forbid you from taking rental cars into or out of Tasmania, so if OP was to go down this path, they would have very limited options. I assume it has something to do with the additional risks with taking a car on the Spirit of Tasmania, or CTP insurance (MAIB) or something like that…

I think OP's only option out of the major rental car companies is Hertz, but I’m not sure if individual locations would actually allow a rental car to be taken to Tasmania, particularly since some Hertz locations are actually franchises.

I can just picture hiring someone on airtasker, and they have one scooter on each leg, fanging it down the Hume Highway….

Would suggest you check with TNT and don't declare DG goods. For local freight, scooter can be classified either DG or NDG, all depends on courier. Good luck

    • Update: Allied is cheaper

      • The DG information is right on the box, it would be risky not declaring it.
