How to Get Rid of Video Ads on BBC Mobile App?

Surely I'm not the only one who goes insane when I have to watch 30 seconds of ads just to watch a 90 s news video? There isn't even an option (that I can find) to pay to get rid of ads. Heard about Lucky Patcher for Android, but downloaded it and it didn't want to install - not sure if it would work in any case.

Does anyone know a way around the video ads?

  • I mean there's probably a way around them but what's the point of watching ad controlled news even if you do block it?

Oh also, apart from the obvious problem of commercial content controlling the news, it says on the tin that it, the BBC News service, exists to advance the interests of the UK government rather than inform you.

    • Except it doesn't.

To provide impartial news and information to help people understand and engage with the world around them

It's also not "ad controlled" as there's no ads in the UK. Only the International feeds as those costs are not covered by UK taxpayers/TV license fees.

OP: Maybe worth sticking to BBC News on browser with an adblocker. No ads at all on iPhone with Adblock.

      • hmm, the browser is an option but the app is pretty handy with the android desktop widget. It's a shame there doesn't even seem like there is an option for an IAP to remove ads.

        • Can you run a VPN service on your mobile at the same time?

What's with all the people suddenly wanting 'news'?

    It's all trash mate.

  • Pi-hole on android. (May or may not work, I've never used Pi-Hole)

Lots of steps for installation, and it also requires Root access. So not for the faint of heart.

    • Android 12 and no root :( but thanks for the suggestion!

Newer android there is a DNS changer built in under setting then connection and put:
    dns.adguard.com
Or download a DNS changer app.
    Use the Adguard DNS:
    94.140.14.14
    94.140.15.15

    • Wasn't able to do it natively on Android 12 ("OK" button greyed out) but I tried a DNS changer app like you suggested, with those IP's and it worked!

Amazing stuff thank you for that!

      • Pay the full version TA.

    • This

I set my home router DNS to Adguard, blocks most ads across all my devices. Really good

      • Thanks that's a great suggestion, I'll do that!

        • Its also side steps our government blocking (eg torrent sites) and tracking.

If anyone in your house plays trash mobile games, some require viewing ads to play this will cause those to crash. On those devices you can set the DNS to a ad one like google 8.8.8.8 or cloudflair 1.1.1.1 on that particular device.

      • Does this get in the way of cashback tracking?

        • Good point… @Bid Sniper ?
