Is $1000 Reasonable for Gutter Cleaning on a Double Storey House?

Looking to get gutters cleaned as all the recent rain is wreaking havoc.

Have been quoted $1000 for the gutters to be cleaned. Is this the going rate these days?

Update: 2022-03-05 - I managed to get various quotes from $300-600 after some leads from fellow ozbargainers in this thread. Thanks all!

How many different quotes have you gotten?

    • Also had a quote for $2300 from a guy that felt like it was a good idea to also replace the corners of the gutters for some reason.

      • +1

I think he quoted $1500 or $1800 for just cleaning the gutters. I kind of tuned out after he said $2300.

        • +2

I think it’ll cost less than 1k to hire a cherry picker for a day and it’ll take you up to the roof and safely stand and clean however you want and fix any guttering while you’re at it.p, check for damage etc.

I'd hope not! Mine is two storey, and takes no time with a blower.

    • +1

Cordless blower I'm guessing. Do you use a harness or just waltz along your roof?

      • +2

Cordless. Yes I walk about 1m from the edge with blower in hand. my tiles are grippy and doesn't feel risky.but maybe that's to do with the angle of the roof.

        • +6

My goodness. Are you also wearing Chinese safety boots better known as flip flops/thongs?

          • +2

            @fishing: for sure!

          • @fishing: Hey! At least his username checks out… He is still here with us to entertain with his gutter cleaning escapades.

    • How will the company explain to SafeWork, if caught using only using only a blower, without the proper safety equipment?

  • +3

Let's have a guessing game on how big the house is !!

    • Probably on the smaller size for a double storey house and maybe even less gutter to clean than a lot of single storey houses given it's almost square shaped.

  • +2

I don't know whether a fair price is $1000, but certainly the safety issues and requirements resulting from having to work 2 storeys up do make it a lot more expensive than a single story house.

    • Any ideas what the price is for a single storey?

      • depends on if you are near the bush or hv tree hanging over. If none of that $200 for single.

        • That's a bargain in comparison. Thanks for the insight.

      • try these guys if they are near you https://www.guttervac.com.au/

        • Thanks, will give them a call

        • Unfortunately it just goes straight to an unanswered head office number - will try again later.

        • Finally got through to them but they don't service my area sadly. They wouldn't provide an indicative price range either.

      • I paid 200 bucks for mines (I knew the guys)
so maybe 250 to 300 normally

      • +2

Single story is a DIY job, so $0.

      • +1

my mum has a single story and she got a fire fighter guy that does handyman work on the side and he only charged her $100 to clean out her gutters and i’m telling you her gutters were full of dirty and weeds growing …lived there 30 yrs and she’s never cleaned them

  • +2

A friend was mine was quoted $850. The house is a 2 storey and isn't very large, but note this was during the 'not so rainy' period. You should expect the prices of quotes to increase when demand is higher and when the weather is worse (think Uber surge pricing)

    • Thanks, at least it sounds like it's somewhat in the ballpark.

  • +1

I do my own so no idea really but gut feel is that's excessive unless it's a really massive house.

I've had a 2-storey (40sq) house washed for $990. A full day of work for one guy with equipment. What does $1k for a gutter cleaner do? Do they bring a toothbrush and scrub it down?

  • +4

$350 cash for gutter clearing 2 storey , but not so convinced they did a thorough job…as currently my gutters are still pissing out water

3 subcontractors rocked up in a beat up hilux with a missing canopy window and no safety gear in site. They did extract a lot of debris - as they emptied it all over my side garden…

    • +2

That's still cheap, you could almost get them to come and do it another 2 times for the price I've been quoted.

    • How long did it take? If it took all day then those subcontractors worked all day for $117 each?

    • as currently my gutters are still pissing out water

Could just be the piping isn't big enough to handle the influx of water. Happened at our place - gutters were clean (as I climbed up) but the water just overflowed the gutter because there was only one exit drainage point and it wasn't enough to handle the amount of water that ended up pooling on that part of the roof and connecting patio

      • Prob this actually , hoping to god water hasn’t found it’s way into roof

        • +1

Most modern gutters have some kind of overflow feature so in the event of blocked downpipes etc the water will overflow away from the house and not into the roof.

  • If they use proper safety rails it’s about $10 bucks per meter if I recall. If your house is 10m x 10m then that’s easily $400 spent on safety.

    • +4

Don't worry about that . Many people on Air Tasker don't give a rats arse about safety . So subtract that cost .

Guttervac charges me $350 for a double storey house. If you're in Sydney give them a try. They vacuums out your gutter and can touch up things on the roof. I have been very happy with them.

    • That's a good price but unfortunately they don't service my area.

google "gutter cleaner for 2 story"

  • +2

time to buy gutter guards for next time

  • i'm in melbourne and got my gutters cleaned, vacuumed for $200.. (single story)

I don't expect a double story to be x5 the price

  • +2

leaf blower and diy an "extension" tube .

    check out these links

    • +1

I made one of those up with PVC pipe from Bunnings. Hooked it up to a wet/dry vac as I didn't want to blow the leaves into eves.

    • If you have any Ryobi gear, there is this 2.8m Pole Blower

  • +1

Had mine done middle of last year. Technically a 2 storey home but since it was on a slope, the front of the house was accessible similar to just one storey. Two gents came and were very professional. Vacuumed the gutters, checked the leaf guards, even plugged a hole with a missing tek screw. All up, they charged me $220.

Looks like all house related services have now doubled, all related to these ridiculous house prices we have created. Just madness & a lot of financial pain when it all catches up, as interest rates start to rise.

I work with tradies developing the safety systems for roof work. Cost is always a factor, no matter what. If they’re going up on the roof, that price could indicate they’re factoring in edging or harnesses…they may even have their own EWP. They could of course be charging that and jumping up on a rickety ladder. Work from heights controls can be costly or time consuming (again, costly).

There are some cool initiatives out there like vacuum trucks used in association with drones to see what they’re dealing with. My advice is ask them how they’re going to do it. This will tell you whether they’re taking the mick. Ask for all of their insurances too.

  • +1

Why don't you look at getting "gutter guard" and have someone install it…. immediately they clean your gutters and you deduct the 1k you were going to pay anyway.

    • Good point - will ask around

  • +4

I meet the people that fall off roofs and ladders every day at work (you can guess where I work) and its so bad we often run out of the pins/kits we need for the feet, anckles and legs… We pre-order as many as we think we need (which any right minded person would think was excessive) but we are always running short! I wish it was ileagal for home owners to get on any roof or ladder over 3m now. Also they shouldnt be allowed to mod electrics too but that for another rant.

here is the truth, you dont need to be old or clumsy ~ we work on kids here too ~ roofs & ladders should be off limits without safety gear!

Pay 1000 and your up 6 months of rehab and maybe a year off work

  • no way i hired a guy and he got on my double story townhouse roof and he used a gerni and cleared out everything and i’m pretty sure he charged only like $300 but it wasn’t a roofing company just a handyman guy …

  • I use a Ryobi shop vac with a 25mm poly pipe to slide along gutters to get spine needles and ti-tree leaves out. Haul it up a zig-zag ladder (bent so it doesn’t squash guttering).
Rusted guttering needs replacing, anyone know how good the plastic stuff is?

  • +2

I have a single story and paid $200 for gutters cleaned and rubbish taken away. In laws have a double story house and same guy charged them $280.

Someone also recommended the service seeking app/website where you post a job and location and tradies contact you with their quotes.
