    Is this i9 or i7 (Core i9 9th Gen or Core i7 9th Gen - Intel Core i7-9750H)

    • i9

      • Its says "Intel BXNUC9I7QNX NUC 9 Extreme Barebone Kit - Core i7 9th Gen - Intel Core i7-9750H Processor 2.60 GHz - 4.50GHz Turbo, 12M Cache" in discription.

        • Description in the post is incorrect. If you click on the link to the product, it is an Intel BXNUC9I9QNX so actually the i9 NUC.

  • +6

Dont get 9th gen, AMD a lot better than that.

    • +1

i don’t think it’s an amd vs intel thing, it’s a NUC ….small form factor add ram and a drive deployment so for a specific consumer market and has graphics on the chip ….. we had them at work and people had option of crap laptop or.better spec nuc with monitor and arm

it’s 9th gen so will run windows 11.

      • +3

Nah it really is an AMD vs Intel thing here, you'd be paying a premium for the option of adding a dedicated GPU with this NUC at the cost of being stuck with a rather old and relatively inefficient Intel CPU, which usually means more heat and more noise - AMD's recent mobile chips are simply superior in that regard, plus their iGPUs are generally much better than Intel's 630.

Unless someone specifically needs the dedicated GPU slot along with this particular form factor, I'd imagine something like this represents much better value for most people, or (assuming size isn't a dealbreaker) a mATX build.

        • CPU is supposed to be Core i9-9980HK. Not sure why the description is wrong

        • 9th gen intel has avery efficient on board gpu with quick sync. One of the best for using with a plex server. So it depends on what you want to use it for.

          • @ONEMariachi: It's a very interesting way to spin it. The native HDMI lacks 4K/60Hz so Intel had to hack around it and use a DisplayPort to HDMI bridge chip to get you 4K/60Hz.

While the Thunderbolt 3 chipset is capable of USB-C/alt-mode DP 1.4, due to the inferior GPU, it regresses down to DP 1.2. $1200 + RAM modules + SSD minimum for a Plex server? Seriously? The 9th gen mobile CPUs are no longer considered very power efficient in today's standard.

            • @netsurfer: I'm unsure why you are referring to the display output for a plex server. It's not the client. It's used solely to store and serve over a network. The onboard gpu is capable of 8-10 transcodes of 1080p content. It's extremely capable.

              • +1

@ONEMariachi: It's an interesting argument to get this (as a plex server). So buy this just to use it as a plex server. It's a GPU back from Kaby Lake (Intel 7th gen) days.

If you really want a Intel UHD Graphics 630, low power consumption device as a plex server, surely there are other better choices. I guess you are going to indicate that you want to put 3 x NVMe SSDs in this type of form factor. If that's the key requirements and you think that's a good price, then sure go for it.

          Asus PN51 R7 $50 cheaper here

It doesn't quite make sense to get a 9th gen Intel NUC. Generally, it is widely regarded as the gen to avoid for NUCs.

        • The 9th gen NUC generally has a GPU regression. Sure, with this one, you don't care about the iGPU, but considered 8th gen NUCs got Iris graphics, this decision from Intel was puzzling.
        • PCIe gen 3 / NVMe SSD support only. I know PCIe gen 4 SSDs are overkill for most people, but we are talking about paying $1199 in 2022 (you still need to get your own RAM modules, an SSD and quite possibly a graphics card).
        • 2 x Gigabit ethernet on this one. 11th gen NUC gets 2.5 Gbps LAN.
        • Is the USB-C/alt-mode DP 1.2 or DP 1.4? If it is DP 1.2 (due to that cheapy iGPU), that's dated and you will have to get older hub (since you cannot benefit from DP 1.4 based hubs at all).

Honestly, I don't quite get a appeal of this particular NUC now. You basically need to deal with its shortcomings. It's only for people who love NUCs so much that they are even willing to go for this gen of NUCs which is regarded as the least impressive.

Anyone else old enough to remember when a 'barebones' computer meant something rather more humble?

    • +3

The good old shuttle barebone kits

      • I still got a couple of those. Along with 2 hp microservers.

  • +4

    I5-11400 220
    Gigabyte Z590I AORUS ULTRA 240
    Noctua L9 60

    Case+power supply+cable bundle 525 ish
    Velka 5
    Power supply: 600W (ENP-7660B-VK)
    PCIe cable: gen 4 (VC-S290G4)

    Total=1050 ish

Cheaper and completely replaceable if faulted and better performance

    • That is around what, 5 times bigger right? By that logic Velka case makes 0 sense as it is much, much more expensive compared to an NR200 that is less than 5 times bigger.

PS: I would prefer the Velka myself, but these 2 are not comparable.

Be aware that this will only fit smaller size GPUs. This is the original "Ghost Canyon".

I've been looking at these for a while but waited till "Beast Canyon" came out which is what I have now. Full size GPU and i9-11900KB. Chucked in 32Gb RAM, 1TB Samsung Pro and re-used an RX6700XT I won in a competition.

Goes really, really well for something the size of an eGPU enclosure!

Be aware Intel have recently announced Dragon Canyon 12th Gen also.

Dont have the link since im on mobile rn, but the 11th gen 11700b (8c16t, tigerlake 10nm) nuc is 1399$ in a few retailers which seems a much better buy for only 200 extra. You get pcie 4 and full length dgpu support as well

Like this one: Intel NUC11BTMi7 I7-11700B NUC 11 Extreme Kit

Agree with you. However, let me guess what other people are going to say. That one is bigger, and I just want to get one as a plex server, 3 m.2 slots is enough. $1400 is too expensive whereas $1200 is just right. That $200 can get you memory modules + more.

      • $1299 delivered from Computer Alliance eBay store using coupon SNSAVE2

Could knock another $39 off by buying $1300 worth of eBay gift cards from ShopBack with 3% cashback. At that point it would only end up costing $55 more than the deal OP posted.

        • Great price BTW. I can't get that one for less then $1200ex through authorized Intel wholesalers.

  • I realise it's older than the beast canyon

What about value for money? Can I get anything better in that compact size? Size is a major factor for me here

Read my comment above about why you generally want to avoid 9th gen NUC. This particular type of NUCs competes with ITX setup. The only thing you could possibly use to trick your brain is that this NUC has Thunderbolt 3 support. But, even so, there is a good chance you get USB-C/alt-mode DP 1.2 via that Thunderbolt 3, that you won't be happy once you get a USB-C monitor.

There are good / much better NUCs. With 9th gen NUCs, you really want to be careful and be cynical. The only reason for me to get an 9th gen NUC is if it is dirt cheap (and really have to be dirt cheap). Even if this thing is at half price, I will still feel uncomfortable getting it. $1000+, honestly, I want to get something I really want, without so many dated components / designs.

      • I've decided to go for the i7 Gen 11 beast canyon.

        • Good choice - I have the i9 and it's awesome for the size.

    • That's the i7 and is cheaper elsewhere. I am ordering something different. The NUC 11 Extreme. Bigger and faster for not much more.

      • Whoops got confused. The OP posted the SKU BXNUC9I7QNX in the description, which IS the i7 version.

You're right the correct code is BXNUC9I9QNX. OP must have made a typo.

        My bad.

Yes your choice of NUC 11 is much better as I've already said. Love my i9 version.

Ta, fixed the OP. I'm pretty such I copied it directly form the site at the time.
