I like the one with 9 LEDs using 3 AAA cells that I got for $3 from Meritline when they had a special.

  • I bought one of these, super high power single LED, with focusable beam. Doesn't last too long on a single AA, but is quite bright :) http://www.meritline.com/cree-led-flash-light-xp-g-q5-convex…

  • Whats your budget?

  • I got these three from dealextreme (based on other's recommendations) and all are great. My fav is the $9 ultrafire one only cuz it's very light and compact:

    $9 http://www.dealextreme.com/p/ultrafire-c3-cree-1xaa-1x14500-…

    $12 http://www.dealextreme.com/p/romisen-mxdl-rc-g2-cree-flashli…

    $17 http://www.dealextreme.com/p/romisen-cree-rc-n3-3-mode-led-f…

    • My Ultrafire C3 stopped working completely after about a year of light usage (excuse the pun). Don't recommend it.

      Romisens are probably better.

  • and if u r interested, check candlepowerforums.com
    very interesting read….

  • Spend $4 on this flexible model http://www.ebay.com/itm/Zoom-Focus-3-Mode-AAA-CREE-LED-Flash…
and check out the Budget Lights forum too.

Multi light levels for flexibility, and a zoom which concentrates the beam for greater distance throw. (Single AA versions are not as powerful). Pay more to get models able to use more powerful 3.7V Li batteries. A case can be handy too.

Check out Coles for prices here.

Get a Maglite XL200 from Amazon.

    Great torch.

    I have the C3.
Not bad torch(bad connection) but the Maglite is a lot better.

The torches above are bright but they need to be cleaned.
The connection between the torch and battery is bad and sometimes they flicker and its quite annoying.

With the Maglite it uses a different connection system and it works very well.

Its also brighter than both of the above suggestions.

AND its made in the USA!

Here in Australia the XL200 is $150 at Australian Geographic shop but it can be had for $41 shipped from Amazon.

    • Agreed, brightness definitely isn't the only thing you want. I've got a few cheapies from DX & Meritline, when they work they're blinding…but I wouldn't trust any of them in a pinch! ;)

One of my main criteria is that when you hit the switch, it works…no need for bits of foil or cardboard, sanding or shaking. Maglites are workhorses! :)

    • Macgyver

I got conned by a cunning [advertorial?] review on Amazon into buying the prior XL100.

A slippery little customer - I dropped mine. Quite droppable; & brightness DROOPS over time -it wasn't fully regulated as with better [more expensive] torches.

IMHO Maglite are still behind the pack in terms of value & usability.
However; the very smooth illumination after removing the reflector head quite impressed me!

      • I like mine.

Seems to work very well and lasts for a while. I use Eneloops.

I have not dropped mine but. Not sure what would happen, hopefully nothing.

  • I literally just bought a Led Lenser P3 AFS P.
It takes a single AAA battery and is good for over an hour of continious light.
It's a mere 9cm long and has 75 lumen. Throws light 120m. Easily fits on a keyring.

I challenge anyone to find a brighter torch at 9cms!
    It's RRP is $29.

If you want a truely excellent torch, check out the Led Lenser P5R, but probably out of your price range:
