Macpac Men's Equinox Waterproof Pertex Down Jacket $280 Delivered @ Macpac

110

Was looking at puffer jackets that were waterproof and came across the Equinox. Thought it was a good price at $280 (after the extra 20% off). Worn it today and it felt alot better than the halo. Fitting is true to its size too and the adjustable ends of the sleeve at the wrist part really helps

  • Is that an real RRP ?

    • Rrp $799.99

Now this is what I call real rrp

        Real Rip-off Price (RRP)?

  • Sad to see this version of the Equinox got revised down to 700 fill power. The previous version was 800 fill power, kept me warm and toasty in Iceland with just a merino layer under
This equinox should be even cheaper now with lower fill power

    • How waterproof are the seams & stitching?

      • +1

in my own use experience, the seams and stitching repel water, it rained everyday throughout my entire 3 weeks stay (most travellers only travel with a 1 or 2 weeks itinerary)
My impression is that the main zip is actually not very waterproof, my trick to counter seepage was kinda 'puff it out' or push my tummy out so the line of materials behind the zip will effectively act as a padded stopper. Light rain is fine, wind seepage is what really tests the seams/stitching quality, I may be wrong, but the my higher 800 fill power puff the jacket out more and keeps me warm.

The issue with Pertex shield is, it's really good with what the repelling side of the job, but it is (relatively speaking) prone to abrasion and then it will lose its repelling prowess. This is the first thing I noticed when I picked up my Equinox and still primary concern. To compensate this, I always carry another full length rain coat to go over my equinox to complete my base-mid-outer 3-layer setup.

I bought my Equinox because at the time 800 fill power was less common, then the pertex shield and other features were just a nice little bonus
however this revision is brought down to 700 fill power, I reckon there are more options out there (e.g. North Face offerings even mine had terrible wind seepage)

        • push my tummy out

          I already do that!

        • But curious as to which North Face equivalents you are referring to? I might move to North Face if they are decent enough

          • @RichieVn: It was the classic Nuptse jacket (700 fill power), the wind seepage was so bad during my NZ Milford Sounds cruise, I had to put the rain jacket on to stop losing temperature
and I didn't pack it with me to Iceland

        • What's a full length rain coat you'd recommend?

    • Are you in Iceland now?

    • +1

perhaps they've improved the down? hence require less fill power? not sure

  • Is this overkill for winter in Adelaide…?

    • i just wore it at home (~20 degrees) just casually to see how it fits and it was pretty warm but still comfortable enough to tolerate. So not sure how cold Adelaide gets but it can be an all rounder puffer jacket. I do like the styling tho
