Critical Error: Your Start Menu Isn't Working

Newly built Techfast Ryden PC with RTX 3080 has arrived. I'm not particularly tech savvy.

Logged in as Techfast (automatic) and noticed right away that Start menu or Cortana cannot start. I get an error which says "Critical Error: Your Start menu isn't working. We'll try to fix it the next time you sign in", has a "Sign out now" option which I did, re-logged in and same problem over again. I can access Windows Explorer, Task Manager, Device Manager etc but not settings or the start menu.

Any help appreciated.

Try signing in with a new account. If same issue then Windows may need to be re-installed. Contact TechFast support.

    Alternatively, try these steps: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/critic…

    • Thanks for that. I can't even add a user as I can't access the settings menu.

  • Does the Windows key on your keyboard make it pop up?

  • Tried the Start Menu troubleshooting application:

"Microsoft.Windows.ShellExperienceHost" and "Microsoft.Windows.Cortana" applications need to be installed correctly.

  • What did techfast say when you called them?

    • No phone available just email

So what did they say when you emailed them?

        • +4

They asked what OZbargain forums said in the comments.

          "When did this happen"
          "Do you have a video"

  • Was the PC supplied with a legal copy of Windows that you bought? If it was then call techfast for support otherwise go outside and grab Polly the parrot and use google.

Sounds like windows didnt install properly, a reset should fix it.

If you cant access the settings menu then you'll need to contact techfast, but if you can, the process is settings > Update and security > Recovery > Reset this PC.

You can try Win+R to access the Run menu, and then type in systemreset

My pleasure. You’ll probably need to reinstall your graphics card drivers from the nvidia website as well as any motherboard specific drivers from the motherboard manufacturers website (go to their support section and type in the model number for your motherboard). Windows usually does a good job of getting all the critical drivers but things like RGB control software you’ll need to download yourself. Enjoy your new PC!
