How Do You Port from Postpaid to Prepaid?

Hi all, im helping out a neighbor who is currently on Vodafone postpaid but wants to port out to prepaid on another network (maybe Catch or Boost)

We have the account number and the postpaid contract will be finishing soon.

Should we convert the Vodafone postpaid plan to Vodafone prepaid first to avoid any port out fees?
When converting the Vodafone postpaid plan to Vodafone prepaid will it be using the same sim or do we need to buy a new prepaid sim pack?

Do we need to contact Vodafone at any stage? To cancel the postpaid billing, port request…etc?

Whats the best way to go about it?
Vodafone postpaid plan => Other network on prepaid
Vodafone postpaid plan => Vodafone prepaid => Other network on prepaid

Apparently you get charged to transfer your number to another provider?

We charge $8 to transfer your number to another provider.

Port the number when activating with the Prepaid provider. Vodafone will issue you a final bill. There's generally no porting fee, just what's owed on the contract.

    • Thanks we were worried about additional fees. I updated the post to include a link where it says that they charge for number transfers

  • Wait until the contract is over before doing anything as if you break the contact by even one day you may have to pay penalties and just because you asked the new company to not do the port until some date does not mean that it will not occur early.

Figure out who you are going to port to and then put the request in to the new company and then once porting is complete Vodafone will send you a final bill. Do not spend time time changing anything at Vodafone as it will mean nothing to the new company.

    So:
Existing Vodafone => new company plan that you want

    • Thanks for the tip. So there is no need to contact Vodafone at all? We are worried they will keep charging after porting out from postpaid

      • Call them and ask.

  • Just port it out. Don't even need to bother telling the current telco, it all happens behind the scenes. Your neighbour will be liable for the contract either way so in terms of savings it's better to wait until the contract is over, but you can port away whenever you want. Unless Vodafone do no contract plans now like Telstra, where you just pay out the handset repayments and the rest of the month you're already in. I haven't looked at Vodafone for years after they cut off my service at 2am after a direct debit failed because my card expired and I forgot to tell them, only noticed when I tried to call a taxi from the middle of nowhere. How rude. I was so pissed off I paid out the last 12 months of my contract later that same day and ported to Telstra, so they didn't have monthly contracts back when I was last with them.

We charge $8 to transfer your number to another provider.

I see Vodafone hasn't changed their scummy ways, I've never heard of a porting out fee my in life.
