How do gift cards work? We have accommodation booked on Airbnb already. I just wonder if Airbnb will deduct the payment from gift cards first or from the credit card that we provided when we booked?

    • +6

No. You have control over it. Once gc balance is loaded in your Airbnb account, you can pay it manually before it’s due.

    • +2

We recently applied Airbnb gcs to our account and it's pretty straight forward.

You enter the PIN and the credit goes into a pool. This lets multiple GCs be used for one booking.
When you select the property and go to payment, the gift card credit gets deducted from the amount
I don't know whether gcs can be applied to paying any remaining amount after the initial booking.

A couple of gotchas they don't document
      1. Max $10000 or 10 gift cards can be applied every 24 hours. Might be plenty for some but if you are dealing with small denominations, it may take you days to enter them all in
      2. Once a gc is applied to an account, that's it, it can't be moved. So be doubly sure which account you are planning to use

      • +6

I don't know whether gcs can be applied to paying any remaining amount after the initial booking.
        Yes, its possible.

      • Once added as credit, do they expire?

  • +12

Why can't we have the option of one $500 card?

So much messing about with these 5x $100.

  • +4

I remember reading something ridiculous like if a booking gets cancelled by the host and a refund would normally be due, that no refund to gift card balance is applicable.

    Truth?

Airbnb used to be great. Now it's just spam hotel listings and over priced rentals so far away from main attractions just because people can. It's got like 5% decent listings.

    • -1

yah I couldn't find any accommodation for Saturday night in Vaucluse for this weekend …

      • -1

        You're not looking hard enough

        • +14

I don't understand why anyone would pay $86 to sleep in a room in someone's house while the owner is there and have to share their bathroom.

          • @capslock: sometimes the owners are interesting and give you local tips.

        • yours?

    • +1

Airbnb used to be great. Now it's just …

Yeah it's definitely turned a lot more shit. It used to be regular people renting out rooms or homes for a decent price, now it seems to be mostly professional Airbnb landlords who monopolise the hotspots, jack up the prices, and ruin the local vibe by squeezing out regular renters. On top of that Airbnb's approach to disputes is absolutely dismal.
I used to be a regular user, now I wouldn't go near them if you paid me.

  • Anyone know if more than 1 gift card can be used as a payment method for a single Airbnb booking?

    • +1

Yes, you redeem them in your airbnb account and then it gets added to your account credit, so you can use that credited amount for the booking.

    • Make sure you redeem all the gift cards first before using them to pay for your Airbnb booking. You can't go back and reapply gift cards again

  • +4

I use to use Airbnb but got burnt with the cancellation policies with covid make sure you check the cancellation policies before booking :)

    • they're way more flexible now. no longer that 48 hour free cancellation, lots allow free cancellation up till a few days before booking

      • We can thank lockdowns not being a thing anymore for that. Makes sense why they're more flexible 😉

        • I figured they were competing hard against hotel bookings which can offer more flexibility in these times.

          • @freestyle18: Just a shame flights aren't so cheap anymore. This time last year I was doing $49 flights and now they're back to a more normal $100.

      • +1

I believe the cancellation period is set by owner/hosts and not by Airbnb.

  • Do the gift cards/ credit expire?

Don’t worry, googled it, they don’t

  • -1

Can you use Stay NSW $50 voucher with these?

  • Don't see an option to not select SMS or option to enter 5 gift cards instead of buying 1 at a time?

    • Found the SMS option, damn autofill

  • Where does it say maximum 5 per person? Can't seen to see it in the link

    • Eventually it will just say

      Daily purchase limit reached.
You have exceeded the daily limit for eGift Card purchases.

      • Is this before or after you click "Pay $100.00"?
I went through the screens on my 6th purchase and haven't seen the message on the final screen…
Don't want to be charged then found out the 6th purchase isn't eligible :(

        • +1

          After :)

  • Welp, it only tracked 4 out of 5. Gonna wait a day before I panic.

    • Strange, all of mine tracked almost straight away.

    • all 5 tracked almost instantly

    • +3

No need to panic @NoGiveJustTake :)

Likely a reporting issue at True Rewards' end due to the sheer volume of traffic. If it doesn't come through today, I can assure you the 5th one will come through after midnight, as they re-cache and re-send the entire sales report at that time. If it's not there tomorrow, let me know and I'll sort it . Thanks :)

      • That's very good to hear.

      • Got the cashback, thanks!

  • +4

EXCELLENT timing.. 5x gift cards purchased. Second AirBnB payment is due in the next few days. Couldn't have come at a better time.

    • +2

Same here, was perfect timing. Just make sure you manually make payment for the final payment and enable the 5 x gift cards for your second payment. I'm not sure if it will take gift card balance automatically, no idea.

      • I almost had a heartattack when I saw the $0.00 credits applied during checkout.. but then I spotted that "Manage" button to enable the 5x cards. PHEW.

    • +1

Same here, went into manage trip payments and applied the 5 gift cards. Only issue is have to pay the remainder via PayPal/card straight away when applying 5 x $100 credits.

    • +1

      Same here, great timing!

    • metoo

  • Have a trip coming up soon and this came in handy. Tracked instantly too. Another awesome deal from cashrewards.

  • Max $10000 or 10 gift cards can be applied every 24 hours at Airbnb - what does this mean

    • I think it means that you can apply up to 10 gift cards with a max value of $10,000 in a 24 hour period.

    • -1

Hopefully it's more clear now. Someone is bound to complain if I don't mention it. They did last time I shared this.

  • And rewardgateway is promoting a measly 6% as their deal of the week..

  • Any idea if these can be used on accommodation overseas? g.g Hawaii?

  • Only tracked 4 too. The page had a weird error but the transaction went thru - think that one missed tracking… uff

Saw TA's comment - that's reassuring :) Will check tomorrow

  • +1

If you change the email address of the recipient (to your secondary email add) you can buy another 5 GCs and redeem all to the same airbnb account

  • Is there anyway of keep tracking of the Airbnb gift card value , other than binding them all on one account?

I got some from last round but forgot which ones I used. A bit annoying

  • +1

A number of people have asked me how to unlink cards from True Rewards after purchase. Here you go :)

    1. Go to payment for another gift card.
    2. Go to checkout - you'll see your card details just before hitting pay.
    3. Click the bin icon and it will be removed.
  • +1

    FYI:

Asked partner to buy an extra 5.
But when they put in my email address (that I used for my first 5), it said maxed out.
So they put their email address and it was OK.

Also was able to use their vouchers in my account.

    • But will you get cashback?

      • Nope!
We both bought 5 each for the same trip.
        So it cancels itself out!

(We both got cashback, if that's what you meant?)

      • +2

signed into my wife's cashrewards account but sent the cards to my secondary email. cashback for both of us!

BTW crypto.com visa card pays cashback for these in case anyone else is into banking CRO

        • Could you use separate cash rewards accounts in order to get the maximum 5 cards per account cashback and send the cards to the one email address? Then use all 10 cards in the 1 Airbnb account? Thanks!

          • @Mini eye: can only send max 5 vouchers to any one email address, even from different accounts.

  • Careful of Airbnb service and cleaning charges

TO ANYONE CONSIDERING BUYING GIFT CARDS TO MAKE ANY REMAINING PAYMENTS.

I just spoke to an airbnb rep via livechat. They said this:

Thank you for reaching out to us. We hope you and your family are healthy and safe during these uncertain and unprecedented times.
I understand that you wish to use gift card to pay for the remaining balance of the reservation. Unfortunately, if you choose a payment plan during checkout, Airbnb credits, coupons, or gift cards will be applied first before the payment plan amount is calculated. Coupons, credits, or gift cards cannot be applied to the second payment, or any future payments.
We are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused and we humbly ask for your patience and understanding.
    Please also feel free to visit the link below for your future reference;

    https://www.airbnb.com/help/article/2143/payment-plans*

So it doesnt look like its possible to use gift cards to pay the balance on existing bookings :(

    • +1

That's strange because I just paid off the $1000 balance on the second half of a payment 40mins ago 🤷‍♀️

      • Really?? Not sure if the rep was intentionally lying or was just misinformed then.

Either way it looks like the cashback deal is sold out now, so it matters not. Damn if I hadn't been given the ring around by the airbnb rep, I would've got some :(

        • Better luck next time! 😟

      • Do you have to add the gift cards into your account first before the option comes up for you to pay the remaining balance using those gift cards amount?

        • (From memory):
          Add all the vouchers first.
          Click on the booking.
Then, there's an area where you can click how to pay, like credit card.
If you click that, you can scroll down to an area that says gift cards.
Click on that, and then a new window will open where it will show each of the gift cards you entered.
Then toggle each of them and apply.

  • looks like sold out

  • Bought 4 but before the 5th it now says 2% cash back now? And won’t give me the option to buy a GC.

  • I wish Airbnb was back in Japan. It was cheaper (according to memory)
