Buying a Kitten from Gumtree. Terrible Idea?

What should i be wary of? What do i need from the owner when i go to purchase the kitten?

The owner says the kitten is flea/work checked and vet checked. There will be documents available to confirm this?

None of the microchips listed on Gumtree (even the $2500+ kittens from breeders) give any information when searched on the Pet NSW government website. Is that normal?

Is it markedly cheaper than going to a pound? I'd be weary given how many thigns can go wrong here but don't have anything specific to share

  • $2500 kittens?

look at the kitten's parents and where they live, and ask for proof of any vet inspections, if in doubt walk away

You are much better off going to the local animal rescue or pound to adopt a kitten/cat/dog. The animals there will be desexed, vaccinated and microchipped. Be careful there's also a lot of scammers on gumtree with cute photos of cats/dogs but they want you to transfer the money first. You can take any pet to a local vet and they can scan for a microchip for free

    • I will be asking for proof of the vet visit.

I will be going to the person's home. Would never transfer money in advance for anything.

I swear there was a Gumtree pet scam on the forums a couple of weeks ago

Yeah i remember that post. I will not pay anything until i've seen the kitten.

      Found it here

The general consensus from that comments section was an astounding no.

      • Wasn't there one where a pensioner got scammed on gumtree (and didn't even see the pet before purchasing)

Yes, it won't grow into a dog.

    • Unless……

      CRISPR has entered the chat

What should i be wary of

Bringing yet another feline into existence (and in the process supporting a terrible, exploitative industry) when hundreds of thousands are killed here every year because people want a "new one. "

Go to a pet rescue centre, many even have cat cafes attached to them so you can meet for lots of cuddles in advance.

Cats and kittens are everywhere. You shouldn’t have to pay that amount for them.

for nothing i can let you have one of my neighbour's many cats/kittens, can you do a bulk order…pleease? ;)

Can you guarantee the breeding situation is ethical and it's not a dodgy setup? If yes sure, if not go to a rescue, heaps of kittens and cats that need a home or end up euthanized

    go to the RSPCA instead
