Is the YouTube premium VPN hack still valid and do people find it relatively painless?

Turned on PS4 last Friday, found YouTube had been logged out, so logged back in. But jeez - the number of ads is now outta control, down to 2 x 5 or 15 sec ads every 2 mins at its worst.

What was previously a minor inconvenience has now become seriously unwatchable. It feels like YT are no longer satisfied with ad revenue, but want to push people to premium.

But in true OB fashion, I will never pay full price….

    Setup a Pi-Hole on your network for free and never worry about ads on any device and any website/application. Can be done with a Raspberry Pi or any 24/7 running PC in a virtual machine. Completely free.

      Unfortunately this only works for when you're using YouTube via a computer, it doesn't block ads when you're using YouTube app on a console or other device like Apple TV.

      It's been a real arms race the last few years and the ad man has definitely won. More info if anyone is curious:

        I thought pi hole blocked it all if your using your home network?

          It definitely doesn't. YouTube and the ad networks have gotten a lot smarter over the years.

          To block YouTube ads, you need to block ads on the client side, and that's not possible on a closed platform.

        A little while ago I was with a mate who wanted to show me something on YouTube on his phone - the ads, OMG.

    Yes I have YT India.

    Took about a day or so to get the trash content off my main page but now enjoying YT premium with rupees.

      Did you make your standard account premium or create a new account account? Wary of trashing everything Google that I have. As you say it takes a while to clean up.

        I signed up to YT Premium via Argentina a couple of years ago. I upgraded my previously created free Google account. I had no Argentinian recommended videos. I already had an extensive YT Hx and subscriptions. I believe the foreign (Argentinian or Indian) content is only suggested on new accounts. My latest charge was $1.59 for the month, I'm of course using an international fee free CC.

        Make sure you sign up via a desktop browser; more currencies are presented that way. Otherwise you might be charged USD in a mobile browser even whilst VPN to Argentina.

        You also get access to YT Music.

    If you sign up, do you still need to use VPN when using youtube?

    This is what I found from their help centre article.

    YouTube Premium:

    If you leave these countries/regions, you won’t be allowed to download videos, videos won’t play in the background, and you may see ads. Any videos that you’ve downloaded before traveling will be available offline for 30 days.
    YouTube Premium members can watch each YouTube Original movies and series while traveling outside of these countries/regions. Background play and download features on this content may not be available.

    The ads are just out of control nowadays. I usually watch them on my web browser with abp turned on. But on Apple tv or mobile devices, its messed up
