    Vodafone = big win. Access to Telstra 5G and better coverage in rural.

    Telstra = no change.

    • By giving access to its towers to TPG customers in low usage rural areas Telstra gets higher utilisation and more return on its investment on its towers in those areas. Instead of both Telstra and TPG having to build towers in areas where there's few customers for each, Telstra gets more users on its towers there and makes money there, and TPG shuts down its towers and loses less money.

      Note that this deal doesn't cover the urban areas where 80% of Australians live. So TPG customers won't get access to the Telstra network there. It only covers the next 18% of Australians. It also doesn't cover the really remote 1%. So TPG customers won't get coverage there.

      Oh, and in those areas Telstra gets to use the spectrum that TPG spent a lot of money buying at auction for not just TPG customers but also its own customers.

        • What I see is posters' comments indicating they misunderstand the deal that Telstra and TPG have announced. It is NOT TPG users everywhere getting access to the Telstra network. It only relates to rural areas. It only relates to access to Telstra towers, not to the Telstra network.

          So, me for example, I live in the outer suburbs of a capital city. The Telstra coverage is great, It includes 5G, which the TPG coverage doesn't. This deal won't make any difference to me. If I was a TPG customer I'd still only be able to connect through the local TPG tower. But if I lived 20 km further out this tower-sharing deal means I'd be able to connect to the TPG network through the nearest Telstra tower, which probably has 5G.

          This report of the deal doesn't require getting through a firewall:

    This will really hurt Optus and MVNOs on Telstra Wholesale, particularly the Telstra Wholesale MVNO's.
    A big competitor with an enormous marketing budget that can compete on price and performance.

    Any word on whether Boost will follow and also get access to Telstra 5G network?

    So now you can get Telstra coverage for TPG prices, no reason to pay the Telstra premium!

    • It'll only be Telstra Wholesale coverage (plus 5G)

      • no, as explained, the barrier with rural has always been tower costs are high, and population coverage is small. Which is the deterrent for others other than telstra to invest. Now Telstra towers are available for TPG to use, nothing to do with telstra (wholesale) coverage.

        in the past, when Optus and voda has tried to do to compensate for less tower is using low frequency spectrum which can travel further to reach these areas. Now TPG has both their existing spectrum and now tower access, making it pretty solid network.

  • I'm rural with Boost. Can't see anything changing. I'm 10km out of town and lucky to get 1 bar at home.

  • I live I a small country town & have a few telstra towers around but all are 4g. I've been told by telstra my tower or the other towers around here will never be 5g

    • This rural tower-sharing deal with TPG may be exactly what gets you 5G. Telstra towers will now have more spectrum to use, and more customers using them. TPG's. It might make the investment in 5G radio equipment worth it. And, anyway, you will get 5G, eventually, because eventually 2G then 3G then 4G will be shut off, but by then they'll probably be up to 7G.
