Hey
Have some DVDs that I wouldn’t mind ripping so I can have them on my Mac to stream over appletv
Wanting one that does a perfect rip with menus and extras etc in other words a 1:1 rip of that makes sense
Anyone recommend me one?
Thanks

I have no idea
I’m just wondering too
I didn't think you could rip an entire DVD, menus and all, and play it on an Apple TV.
Infuse would do it.
I used to use Mac the ripper back in the day. Not sure if development continued or how old of a Mac you’d need to find . This was pre-intel days!
MakeMKV
Is it available on Mac tho? I used it recently and it preserves menus if you select the option.
does the Apple TV handle ISO files?
Apple has the most prohibitive restrictions out of any platform, i doubt its possible.
So having the extras and menus too can’t be done
So what program to use to get a perfect rip of the movie and what file type am I looking at using to use on appletv
Handbrake
Came here to say this. The best answer.
On a PC it's easy for DVD's with MakeMKV and/or Handbreak.
On a MAC I would try them and see how you go as they are the right price.
Been googling and found MacX DVD Ripper….thoughts
I've used that one before. It works :)
I don't normally bother with all the menus though, just rip everything off to mkv files…
I’ll check it out
ALL THE INFO YOU NEED FOR OSX/UNIVERSAL 64BIT & M1/PRO/MAX NATIVE ~ FREE/PAYWARE DONATION OPTIONS
Handbrake >1.4 Released with Apple M1 Support & optimisations but encoding you need to select the M1/Pro/Max VIDEOTOOLBOX 264/5 CODEC and encoding will go from 30fps to >300-600fps (M1>Pro>MAX) ~ You may need to find and add the DVD decode DLL to rip a DVD (Im not sure about decoding BRAY as I only do the odd DVD backup to MP4/MKV) ~ its free, its awesome and with the encoding tip you will love the M1/ProMax supported native!
The other FREE alt is VLC (also native now) that will rip a DVD. Im not sure of encoding speed being optimised for M1/Pro/Max as I use HANDBRAKE as its pretty easy to use with lots of online help for the complete noob! M1/ProMax supported native!
https://www.macxdvd.com/mac-dvd-video-converter-how-to/rip-d… (biased to sell you software) & NOT M1 NATVE, but 64bit emulation of UNIVERSAL translation, so SLOW!
the FREE version of MacXDVD is LIMITED to 5min No mention of NATIVE M1/Pro/Max (just UNIVERSAL 64bit all core/cpu encoding)
So Id recommend HANDBRAKE over paying for this…
MakeMKV for OSX (can front end for backend Handbrake/VLC in the Options) M1/ProMax supported native!
https://mysolutions.tech/makemkv-handbrake-best-combination-…
MacTheRipper for OSX v4.1 is NATIVE M1 (after 2.2.4 is free but after that, newer version is not free now, but donation PAYWARE model, http://www.mac-the-ripper.com/mactheripper-alternative.html)
M1/ProMax supported native!
**** OH YOU WILL NEED A DVD/RW, even if its an external for your MAC ***
Only VLC/Handbrake can do video-file encoded/re-encode to a video-file without a DVD

How to Download Install libdvdcss on Mac for HandBrake
Step 1: Download libdvdcss.pkg on Mac OS.
libdvdcss.pkg for Mac OS
Step 2: Double click the downloaded file to install libdvdcss on Mac. But note that there is one more step for installing libdvdcss on Mac El Capitan, because of its SIP (System Integrity Protection), which is said to remove libdvdcss by default. We found two workarounds: disable SIP and a more complicated but recommended way from a Reddit user (as below).
The second way:
Instalar Handbrake libdvdcss para Mac
Instalar Handbrake libdvdcss para Mac
2. Again click "Go" on the taskbar -> "Go to Folder" -> type "/usr/local/lib".
https://www.cisdem.com/resource/handbrake-wont-rip-dvd.html (for M1/Pro/Max)
Click here to download libdvdcss.2.dylib file << you need the latest, V2 of libdvdcss for 64bit support OSX
Go to the path /usr/local/lib.
Drag-n-drop the libdvdcss.2.dylib into the folder.replace libdvdcss.2.dylib
Moreover, ensure that both HandBrake and VLC you installed are in the same bit number. 32 bit VLC corresponds to 32 bit HandBrake, and 64 bit VLC corresponds to 64 bit HandBrake.
Or the simpler solution for mac's is to use HOMEBREW
Unless the DVDs are very rare, with all the messing around ripping stuff you'd be better off finding "alternate" options. And they'd be just as moral given you already own it.
What did your research find before posting here?
Best dvd ripper for OS X
But I’d rather personally recommendations then some site ones
I use WinX DVD ripper for windows, but they do an apple version too. Very good for TV episodes.
Well worth the purchase price.
DVD Ripper? Have you got a copy of Harry Potter & the Philosopher's Stone you want to preserve for future generations?
Hahahah nah just some DVDs that didn’t make their way to bluray and digital versions are not available on Apple
torrents?
the only way you can make a full copy that includes menus, navigation etc. is to make a .dmg or a .iso
however- the only way you can play that and have control like a proper DVD is to mount the image then play it with something like Apple's DVD player.
How do I know this?
Because Plex announced that they were dropping the ability to play DVD's like this about a week after I finished making .iso's of about 600 DVDs
So I did them all again with MakeMKV
You decide what soundtrack, which feature and subtitles off/on then it will create a containerised version of your DVD. It is bit for bit perfect- but does not include all the bits that the .iso does
So of course now I have to keep both copies…
Ok thanks for that
As in, you want to still be able to use the DVD menus on a rip? I didn't know that was possible! Following to learn! I felt that could only be possible by making an ISO and emulating a virtual drive on your computer.
