Three Days Trip to Cairns - Activities Recommendation

Good morning all. We are a group of four and we will be travelling to Cairns in the 2nd week of March for three days. We would like to places to visit and activities recommendations. We are losing our head on scuba diving; unfortunately, the scuba diving course for beginners is not less than 5 days. We would like to know if it's worth going for one day experience that is being provided by the majority of companies. If you have alternate suggestions for scuba diving, we would love to hear them. Since it's one of those rare trips to the great barrier reef, we would not want to miss out on the diving experience.

Please provide suggestions for different activities and places to visit. Thank you heaps!! :) :)

Go to viator.com and have a look at all the options available.

You can see as much snorkelling as you will doing the diving introduction. The dives sites on the reef are usually less than 8-10m in depth, so if you can duck dive you won’t miss much.

The alternative is to do your Open Water or equivalent course before you go to Cairns so you can do a proper dive when you get there.

Unfortunately, we are planning to fly on Monday and back mostly by Wednesday night or thursday afternoon. They offer diving course on sundays and fridays.

Fitzroy Island is good for a day trip if the sun is out. Climb to the top of it for some great views.

BookMe seems to have the best deals in my experience, whether for a reef trip or anything. They have Fitzroy ferry for $25.

Also I really enjoyed Tully white water rafting and also river tubing.

    • Thanks for the suggestions. I checked official website of the diving company, the cost is less. Probably might go direct with them.

      • My wife and I try to get up to cairns each year. Fitzroy Island has great snorkelling and plenty of turtles but water clarity is dependant on conditions.

We are big fans of the Atherton tablelands, great cheese places up there, an amazing waterfall circuit and some beautiful crater lakes. We prefer it to kuranda and skyrail

I had no issue doing a 1 day snorkeling tour of 3 dive locations.

Also did white water rafting on a pretty beginners course. Good fun.

Get a hire car and drive up the coast towards Pt Douglas; plenty of nice beach spots along the way. Mossman Gorge is also great for a short hike and dip in the river. Go further up to Daintree if you want to make a long day of it.

    • Water rafting would be interesting. We would like to do as much water activities as possible.

    • Could you please mention the site where you booked snorkeling and River rafting? Thanks

  • Day trip to the Daintree! Go walk on beaches with huge crocs lying about.

  • Get a hire car and check out crystal cascades, botanic gardens, port douglas or kuranda. I would also recommend a trip out to fitzroy island.

    • Hiring a car would be first, followed by trips to close by sites. I hope our plan for scuba diving achieve its success.

  • Getting a car is useful. Visiting Mossman gorge, palm cove, Kuranda and Daintree, all are within 1.5 hr drive. In Cairns, visit Rusty's market and there are heaps of nice restaurants near the Esplanade.

I can give lots of suggestions of companies, and places to go, depends what kind of activities you are looking for.
You can do an introductory scuba dive if you want to try it. Most reef tours have 3 snorkel/dive sites and you can dive at one and snorkel 2 others. I went with Calypso from Port Douglas to Agincourt reef.
Renting a car and doing a day trip to the waterfalls loop is nice - Millaa Millaa is most touristy, Elinjaa is my favourite. Josephine Falls is great. I didn't get to Babinda Boulders but that looks great too.
If you're adventurous, I also did canyoning and river boarding with Cairns Canyoning. As well as white water rafting on the Tully River with Raging Thunder.
If you want to go to a beautiful beach for some snorkelling, go to Fitzroy Island or Green Island.

  • I'm back from my Cairns trip. I did snorkeling and two scuba dives. It was an amazing experience. The trainer was pretty good. We drove all the way to Mossman Gorge, however, floods affected the beach water. We went to Kuranda by rail and cam back via skyrail. It was an amazing trip considering we went there for 2½ days. Probably we will explore island, daintree forests, river rafting on our next visit to Cairns. Thanks for the suggestion 👍
