Credit Receipt Destroyed and Now Seller Not Reissuing Receipt

Hi OzB Gang,

I purchased a watch from Timeless Watches Brisbane Airport but had a change of mind so went back to return. Apparently they don't do refunds so I got credit receipt.

The credit receipt was destroyed and lost but now Timeless Watches is saying they will not reissue the credit as it is lost and it is money that anyone can claim. I just told them the receipt was destroyed assuming they understand no one can claim it.

Is this something that can be reported to anyone?

What can I do, it was a $210 credit it would be bad to lose.

    Copied and Pasted from here

*Refunds aren’t always an automatic right. Businesses don’t have to give you a refund if you:

    change your mind
    buy the wrong size
    buy the wrong colour.*

it would be bad to lose.

Well at least it was only a $210 lesson.

It sounds like you've damaged/lost/disposed of a credit receipt that anyone can present at their store for credit - I don't think they're required to issue another? Have they done something wrong in your scenario?

“Well, they refused to pay for my mistake!”
      - OP, probably.

I can understand their logic "I know in my heart the $210 voucher no longer exists, so it wouldn't cost them any more to reissue it" but pragmatically it pushes all the risk onto the store (by making a 'free money for liars' loophole on credit notes).

They didn't have to give you a change of mind refund but they did.
You then lost/destroyed the credit receipt they gave you and you want to report them…
    Am I reading it correctly?

      Re-read the OP…

is not a faulty item. Credit receipt sounds similar to gift cards. If you destroy them it's bad luck.

What's to stop you from getting another $210 credit note and then fronting up to get a $420 item with 2 credit notes?

What proof do you have that it is actually destroyed?

If you ate a steak at a restaurant and when the waiter collected your plate you said it was tough and inedible and your not going to pay, what proof do you have for the owner the steak was tough?

It sucks you lost/destroyed/misplaced it but that is hardly the shop owners fault.

Seems odd they have little tracking on credit notes (and can't void them) but I guess if you accepted the credit note with the T&Cs that lost notes are not replaced etc…

    Bikies.

With em you can extort back your $210 the shop easily.

I'm surprised they didn't create a customer account with your credit note, all my experiences have involved this.

Other than that i feel you may be SOOL

    • I guess considering it's an airport branch they probably figure they'll never see that customer again.

    • I think unless they tell you explicitly the credit note is saved and tagged to you as an individual customer/account, I assume it’s to be treated ‘like cash’ and if you lose it, you lose it.

I always thought gift cards/voucher/credit notes are treated like cash. You loose it the business is not obligated to reissue.

I always thought gift cards/voucher/credit notes are treated like cash.

Yes they are. For this exact reason.

  • That credit note is equivalent to cash.

You lost the cash credit note so bad luck.

    🎻

  • They should have issued a gift card with a number that they can track in their IT system, then they can revoke the original number and issue another.

They can't do much as it is though

    • Yeah , or you know , not give op a change of mind refund/credit and save themselves from having to invest in a gift card system, sounds like a business that would make bank from selling giftcards.

Yeah a refund immediately would have been better

This reminds me of that time a bank draft for €1.3 million was lost in the mail… The bank said it would honor the lost draft only if the client signed an indemnity in case the draft was presented again later down the track…

…However for $200 i don't think they would waste their time, its pretty much the same as you losing your wallet with $200 in it that you intended to spend in the store, and then asking the store to honor it. It's never pleasant to lose that amount of money but there isn't any obligation for them to wear the cost.

Store credit is treated as money. If you lost it then you are out of luck.

Destroyed is quite a powerful word. How exactly? If it was in the wash etc you still should be able to recover some of it. If your house burnt down then insurance $$$.

  • Just like the old days, if you lost your receipt or didn't register a profuct, you had no warranty.
