Best SIM Card for US Travel in 2022?

Hi,

I'm travelling to the US soon.

What are the best options for a SIM card (data only is fine) for approx 1 month?

Read some stuff about just signing up for a normal pre-paid plan with one of the big 3 telcos (T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T) and cancelling after a month.

If they do eSIM, it'll be even more handy as I can just keep my Aussie SIM connected in case I need to do any text message verification.

Wasn't sure if this was the best option. Any ideas from people who have gone recently?

Pop into T-Mobile store and grab a 1-month sim from them. Plenty kiosks and vending machines in airport too. No need to overthink it. You can enable your current Australian SIM roaming as a backup option for day or two if absolutely required (e.g. if order SIM card online).

If you're travelling through UK by chance, grab this £10 SIM card which gives you 12 GB data in USA for a month cheap: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Three-Mobile-12GB-data-Pay/dp/B098F…

    • Cheers mate. Would that be a short-term 1 month plan? Or is it just a normal ongoing prepaid plan that I cancel early out of?

It's usually a standalone SIM that you add a one-month add-on package to. Then after 30 days it just expires till you top up another add-on.

You can even get them at airport vending machines for $0.99 sim-only then add a package add-on OR $30 for 10 GB 30 day prepaid SIM.

I went to USA in January and used the 3 Mobile UK SIM + an esim I found on this site https://esimdb.com/usa

If you're using iPhone the TMobile PrePaid eSim App is available and you don't even need to visit a store. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/t-mobile-esim/id1437014693
Their minimum plan cost is relatively high so if you're after a budget maybe look elsewhere.

https://esimdb.com/usa is an amazing resource. Just search by price/gb and pick one. You can always buy a second if you run out of data

I tried using these guys in Europe… then Covid happened. I'm now looking and am thinking of getting the $67 one for my trip

Used SimCorner when we travelled to the USA in 2018. Having the sim delivered before travelling allowed me to put it in my phone during the flight, and able to use it as soon as we left the terminal. Perfect for coordinating airport shuttle pickups, hotel reservations etc as soon as we walked outside.
    Would definitely recommend.

  • I’m in the USA at the moment, went to Walmart and picked up a “Keep Your Own Phone SIM” - it was cheaper than going to a store (eg AT&T or TMobile) and you can choose which network. I’m happy with coverage and had no issues setting it up. There are also data only plans available from what I saw.
