Metabox Prime-Ai 15.6" Laptop, 144Hz, Ryzen 9 3900X, RTX 3060, 32GB RAM, 512GB SSD $2499 (Upgrades Available) + Post @ Metabox

One of the most power CPU you can find on a laptop, packed with a full powered* 3060, in a pretty well rounded chasis with solid cooling (metabox applies thermal grizzly by default).

I will be honest , the stock configuration is not perfect. You are recommended to swap the stock 32GB 2666mhz ram for 32GB 3200mhz (+49$), and upgrade the wifi card to killer 1650 ($69)-note you can also buy the Killer 1650 for around the same price and swap it out yourself. It also only cost $39 to upgrade to an 1TB Kingston AX2000. The total which then comes out to $2656 if you factor in the aforementioned upgrades. Other upgrades are also avalible but these ones should be the best bang for your buck. No windows installation is provided so get your own.

Here comes the important bits, for one, I did mention it's a 'full powered' 3060, but metabox's list it as 115w. That's both true and not true to an extent-in actuality, full powered laptop 3060 are 115W-you can check for yourself on the Nvidia website, the extra 15w came from dynamic boost for which this laptop does not support. For the uninitiated, basically whenever the cpu doesnt use its full wattage-usually 45w-the GPU draws extra power that the cpu dont need. So yes, given a perfect, ideal scenario, other laptops could draw 15w extra over this laptop, but this 3060 will perform just as well in most situations. Since the 3900x does not come with an iGPU, you arent going to be troubled with all the ‘optimus’ and ‘mux switch’ stuff, your gpu is always connected directly to the cpu for optimal performance.

Let's talk about the CPU, well, it's a 3900x, which bulldozes through any 11th gen/5000 series mobile CPU with ease. It's only till the high end-12700H/12900H/12900hk- will it show its age. Normally, the 3900x can pull off 19k on R23 easy, and 17k is about as high as the new intel 12th gen goes given current benchmarks. However, the 3900x here is also restricted to 65w 'eco mode' (yes, it could boost to 88w for a short bit, but the TDP of a 3900x is 105w), the performance will drop accordingly.

Do note the 12th gen cpus will massacre this in single threaded benchmarks, better fps in games with the new chips for sure. On the other hand, no 12th gen machines are any cheap, the current cheapest 12th gen on preorder here in oz is the MSI GF66, which costs 2.7k, and if its like last year, its an 85w 3060 with no mux switch-could change this year of course, but given MSI did not advertise the thermal headrooms unlike what they did with their GE/GP series, I dont think theres an upgrade.

The panel is fairly average, at FHD, 98% SRGB & 144hz (btw, lots of big brands will claim '100% srgb' on their laptops, but in reality the actual colour average is always around 97% or 98%) so metabox is being honest by giving you the actual expected numbers. There’s a lot of options for upgrade as well if that’s what you interested in. It costs 99$ for an 240hz FHD panel, or you can opt for QHD 165hz, or even 4k options for an extra 200, 300 dollaroos, all panel choices come with option for colour calibration for an extra 20-30 bucks.

Storage wise, there is 2 m.2 slot, one supporting PCIE 4.0 and 1 PCIE 3.0, and 1 more 2.5’ slot. So you have plenty of options there as well. With the exception of the first upgrade I suggested above, I don’t recommend having metabox install anymore-you can do it yourself for cheaper.

As for ports, there's one USB 2.0 port, 2 USB 3.2 type A ports, one Type C USB 3.2 with DP 1.4, 1 mini DP 1.4 port and 1 HDMI 2.0 port. RJ45 and your usual 3.5mm jacks & SD card slots are there as well.

Oh and nearly forgot, both 5900x/3070 upgrades are available. But I think this is the best bang for your buck. You can upgrade the cpu down the line by yourself but note metabox does not officially support it under their warranty-iirc doing so will not automatically void the warranty but they wont cover for any issues with the cpu upgrade.

  • I assume battery is non existent?

    • You get about an hour or so on battery. So yeah treat it as UPS

No idea if it's a great deal, but upvoting for the extremely comprehensive description, thank you

It good to know and understand for other laptop deals too.
      Thank you OP.

  • some of the display options are "IPS-Grade"? what display technology actually is it lol. VA?

    • Hard to say, could be VA could be TN panels. You could send a email to metabox.

TBH I dont think panel types matter too much on laptops, their actual specs matter more imho. My laptop have an 'ips grade' panel and I cant the difference to my IPS monitor - since both are FHD, made by the same brand and have the same colour coverage and brightness, only difference being one is 300hz and the other 240hz. Maybe the differences are more prominent on higher resolutions or with broader colour space?

if i remember correctly IPS vs IPS Grade, is either a Certificate issue or a different brand.

Were a license holder can state its IPS but someone without the license or a different manufacture that doesn't have the license, can still manufacture in-plane switching but cant claim that

I have owned about 5 laptops in the past 2 years all with IPS Grade or IPS Like panels

And they look the same as a IPS Panel

        Hope that helps

        • Hmm that's kinda strange, because both my monitor and laptop are the same brand (asus) but one can use the the branding but one can not? Or its tied to the actual manufacturer for the panels?

          • @Brrrrt: i think its tied to the actually panel manufacture

    • +1

You do realise that IPS is an LG trademark.
      https://trademarks.justia.com/790/91/ips-79091568.html

Hence the panel provider may not have the authority to claim that it is exactly an IPS panel.

It may have a Samsung PLS panel, with similar capabilities to IPS, or another supplier.

  • @Brrrrt you seem to know a great deal about laptops and provide lots of good information on this site on various bargains, but mate, this system for $2499 is not a deal given other comparable 3060 systems on the market. It's worth about $1800 on specs and battery.

Just by gaming, yes, an 11600/11800h/5600/5800h + full powered 3060 with mux is around the 1.8k mark. But the 3900x wins in the productivity department as it's a 12c/24t chip-even if power limited by the laptop form factor. Besides, the upgrade option for this is pretty huge, you could install a 3950x or 5900x and the likes in it down the line, unlike your average laptops. If one want a lot of cpu power on the go this is a pretty good deal. As I said above, a 12th gen cpu with 'comparable' multicore score and rtx3060 also comes in at 2.7k.

    I bought Alienware X17 R2, 17" FHD 165hz, 512gb ssd, i7 12gen, 16gb ram 4k8, 3060 6gb…..$3k. Something less something better, but i think price is good enough.

    • +1

That's a decent price, I assume its with the 20% educational discount?

      • 27% off in total, so its good enough for a pre-order new model. I know that will have better price if u can wait (up to 40% off sometimes). But it would become old model to be on sale like always….

        • 27%? I thought edu discount is only 20%, would you mind explaining how you got that? thanks in advance

          • +1

@Brrrrt: To be honest, i got no idea. From the email that Dell sent to me via Edu Portal, there are 2 codes can be applied to my cart and gave me 27% off in total.

            • @Nguyeniaht: Have you received your order confirmation and payment went through correctly? I did the same for x14 and order has been cancelled two days after. According to the online agent it was due to some system glitch..I will wait for my refund and try another time.

    • I bought similar specs but a 3070, QHD in a razer 17" for 2400 last year from Microsoft during one of the ebay sales. There are good deals to have if people are in a position to wait.

      • I saw that b4 but i like Alienware somehow ^_^

        • I like Alienware too, the one I upgraded from was a 15 inch. But I didn't want the mechanical keyboard that came on the new ones cos it doubles as my work laptop. Sad times.

          • @bloopzorm9: ???? From the one that I picked, its just like an option. So if u pick cherrry keyboard then extra around $85….then i did not pick and stick with normal keyboard

        • I am on an Alienware avoidance path. Had an issue with mine (Desktop) 13 months in just past their stupidly short 1 yr warranty… Pain to get them to acknowledge a problem noting ACL, ended up just buying the replacement parts on Amazon and say screw dealing with them…

  • It's hard to see the value in this as the 3900x is overkill for most consumers. It also doesn't come with windows either so you'll need to fork out for that in addition to the add-ons you recommended.

The price is then in the range of Legion 5 pro with 3070.

    • The main benefit is upgradeable CPU as it's an AM4 socket. So you could buy a 5900x, like the Amazon flash sale yesterday, and have a good upgrade path if you need a 12 core CPU.

    • +1

I didnt say its for most consumers mate… this is for power users that needed the raw cpu power in a mobile chasis, with the ability of getting even more power down the line.

I also did mention that it does not came with windows licence :(

    Metabox Prime…..my favourite Autobot

    • make transformers great again!

  • I find for gaming you'd want a 24" monitor at least with a decent keyboard too. The mobile aspect for work purposes.
