This device allows you to share an ethernet or serial device (ISDN, Dialup) amongst multiple computers. It also has VPN termination.

Bargain for this little beast. It may be ugly, but it will do the job without a sweat.

Sooooo Cheap! Just use the coupon above in checkout.

Post is approx $12 or under for most of Australia, $14 or under for express. (New flat rate post coming next month).

I am a rep for the site. Please let me know if you have any issues as this is a new coupon system.

Edit it appears the new coupon system requires you to be registered (logged in) before purchase to get discount. Apoligise for any inconvinience.

  • Indeed it is ugly. Wouldn't want to be looking at that every day. :P

    • Hehehe, Well you could put it under your desk or build a server room for it :)

  • Can I use it to connect my DVD player with an ethernet port wirelessly to my Wireless modem?
I mean, I place the router close to my DVD player, and connect the two using an ethernet cable, and then router connects to my modem, all without my having to use a 10 metre ethernet cable (Patch Cable).
    Thanks,

    • No you cannot. This is a wired router, so you will still need to run wires in between. What you need is a Ethernet-to-wireless bridge for your dvd player so it can connect using wireless.

  • Do not touch this router with a barge pole! It is easy enough to setup but unless you plan on doing a bit of websurfing and not much else it is completely substandard. Locks up under very little load and Open Networks do not give refunds.

If you want a router with VPN get a Linksys WRT54GL for $65-70 and flash it with DD-WRT VPN Firmware. The 54GL does not have the serial fall back to dial up or ISDN however if you specifically need that look at the D-Link 800 series which is a much better option.

    • OPEN Networks wouldn't give refunds unless you bought it directly from them. Seems like you got one that wasn't working. It comes with a 12 month warranty, so it would be replaced if anything wrong.

      • The unit I had was not broken. It was the unit itself that was and is sub par. The price of $40 is quite good given they used to be $179 a couple of years ago. The only thing this thing may (and I use the word may advisedly) be suitable for is sharing a 56k modem connection thus saving you having to use Windows Internet Connection Sharing.

For anything else, especially something like VPN, this unit does not present value. When you can get a Linksys WRT54GL for $65-70, flash it with DD-WRT VPN and live happily ever after this Open 524R should rightly be EOS/EOL.

  • Thanks guys for the advice,
    Cheers
