eBay Forcing User to Set up Direct Debit, if They Want to Use eBay Plus

Recently I got my eBay Plus membership cancelled, because I do not have a registered bank account.

Cancelled and not refunded.

Contacted eBay, and they said, set up Bank account and we will reactivate. But there is no way to set up bank account without setting up direct debit.

I do not want to set up direct debit to my bank account, I do like the extra layer of protection I have with Credit Card.
So I did set up a credit card where eBay can deduce sellers fees.

Then in the chat the agent offered a solution: sign up again and she will refund the previous payment.

I thought, OK, let's do that.

Today I discovered that if I don's set up bank account, they won't process my refund.

Anyone with he same experience and has an idea on how to NOT SETUP direct debit ?

If you really want to use eBay, set up the direct debit and revoke authorisation at the bank's end and leave the bank account empty.

    • Looked into that: "You can contact us and request that we send a cancellation request on your behalf, and if needed, block any further payments." and "Alternatively, Direct Debits can be cancelled with the Biller"

Seems I cannot cancel directly. And eBay knows

    • Last time I paid eBay Plus fee using Prepaid MC in Paypal with 2.5% foreign fee, still better than use other card.

It does not accept Prepaid card directly.

      • It wasnt paying that was the problem, I did pay with Paypal and eBay plus was active, but later on cancelled by eBay because I did not have set up bank account for dd. But already implemented @justdigi solution.

      • I think they mean use the ANZ BSB and account that Revolut provide for depositing money into. It will not accept direct debits, only credits. A DD attempt will just fail.

    Boycott it.

I don't get it. Why would they need Direct Debit since most ebay purchases allow you to choose to pay via Credit Card or Paypal or something like that?

  • Yea correct no point of giving eBay your main bank account direct debit authorization.
If this seriously bothers you though, then make a new bank account (that doesn't allow account overdraws, aka account cannot go in negative BY DEFAULT like ING, or Wise). ING will always make the account go in negative, and then instantly reverse the transaction, (making the account positive again). Be careful with this kinda thing, If your bank statement shows your account in negative (even -$0.01) at any time in near past, they may not offer you credit (this is one of the policies of Commbank, but other institution will likely have similar policies)

Signup to eBay plus with those details, And then close that bank account, or just dont use it (leaving it with $0) as it cannot be overdrawn.
