Unusual Stuff to Claim on Private Health Insurance

Does anyone have tips on stuff you can claim via private health insurance? New employer basically maxed out all of the health plans + extras - I've submitted 2x claims out of network and both got paid 100% from receipts.

Looking for ideas on stuff to claim like: massage, sunglasses, skincare products etc.

Was looking at stuff like teeth aligners (Byte) but I don't think they're supported unless you go via an orthodontist, so looking at SmileDirect and Invisalign.

  • I have claimed products under Artificial Aids before. Most recently I claimed a Wearable Frequency Healing Device as it's classed as a Tens Machine with the TGA

I've been considering buying a TENS Machine for spinal pain, good idea.. Will investigate! Exactly the kinda shit I was wondering about!

Not for long, and probably for good reason.

There's a reason that the claims are set at 60, 70 or 80% max - part of it is to make sure there's an out-of-pocket for the user and everything is not just "free" and hopefully prevent people from claiming services they don't really need (although some service providers will circumvent that by jacking the price on the invoice).

Sunglasses are not usually covered by private health, but some stores are willing to substitute sunnies for prescription glasses.

    • Sunglasses are not usually covered by private health

You mean non-prescription sunnies? I've always gotten prescription sunnies.

      • Yes..it's the stock sunnies that aren't usually covered for by private health.

    • A friend of mine is allowed to spend a certain amount at the cancer council each year and be reimbursed under their private health insurance extras package. This includes sunglasses, sunscreen, hats, etc

      • Which health fund?

        • AHM

      • What's the cover like? I can't say I've seen it, but I can't imagine it'll be anywhere near the amount they'd cover for prescription sunnies.

        • $250 per person capped at $500 per policy is the rebate. Not sure about the rest of the policy details

      • Had that for a while with AHM until I downgraded my cover to the next level down.

  • Ask the massage place if they will let you buy massage giftcards. Which you can gift to others or use at a later time rather than stressing to spend the limit by a set date

    • I love this idea but have never seen gift cards at a massage place. But how would I buy it but then they need to swipe the card to claim? I don’t get it. Or u can pm me

      • You might maximize your chances by asking around some of the Asian massage places (legitimate ones) that take private health

  • Have you read the policy? It'll usually get pretty detailed on what you can claim or not (and how much you can claim for each item).
