Outlander 2020 - What on Earth Is Going on?

Morning all, I am wondering if i should paint my 2020 Outlander LS yellow and confirm I have a lemon.

Bought the thing brand new in June 2020. I had a few "minor" issues… sometimes the radio display is just black, music playing but nothing happens. The seatbelt warning sign doesn't come on until 1 minute… yes, i can do close to 100kph without being reminded to put on my seatbelt. Great. Wonder how that affect the ANCAP rating, but that's another story. Apparently it's the same in 2019 onward outlanders. Software issue?

The real problems start in October 2021. I have a tow bar installed and at the same time hardwire in the Viofo dash cam I bought. 3 days later… dead battery. I though it was the dash cam, so, unplug the power cable at the cam, replace the battery…

A week later, another dead battery. NRMA comes out, disconnects the hardwired dash cam cable, jump starts the car. I drive around to charge it, drop it off at the service place of the dealer, they tell me the battery was faulty, dead cell. Okay. I had charged the original battery, put that one back in… 3 weeks later, dead again. New battery, last Thursday… you guessed it… dead again.

About to have the car towed to the dealer. I know it can't be the hardwiring of the dashcam (right?). The dealer claims there's nothing wrong with the wiring of the electrics of the tow bar.

What could it be?

I had a blackvue dashcam draining my battery for about a year.
The low voltage cutoff was not working as it should and not cutting off at 12.3v during parking mode.
    Perhaps it is the dashcam.

    • I thought this too… but it has been disconnected from the battery and the cam since the second dead battery

I did contemplate that maybe they ripped the cable when they put it in… but thought that may be a long shot?

if the dealer did both jobs, i'd leave it for them to sort it out. Seems clear they stuffed something up in one of the installs.

With those few "minor" issues just get it back to the dealership as it should be a warranty call. And don't wait for ANCAP test as you may not like it!

    • I have been complaining to the dealer since the first service (4 weeks after). A software update did crap all. The seatbelt issue is currently raised with Mitsubishi Motors Australia.

tbh, first brand new car i ever owned. It's been a let down.

      • So if seatbelt has a glitch, it may not work properly or not work at all in an accident. With a stereo issue, yeah software may broke it but sometimes only replacement will fix it. I do remember AUDI software glitch in Europe in 2020 when some ECU blocks were replaced due to corrupted code.
Maybe try to push it to the dealer as it might be unsafe to drive.

        • The seatbelt warning is a software issue. Manual states it should give an audible warning after 6 seconds, but it's 60 seconds.

The stereo is just a problem on its own….

Probably the first person to complain about the lack of a seatbelt warning chime.

  • Hi,

I'm another Outlander 2020 LS owner as well.
Never had any of your minor issues or dead battery.

The car has been great so most probably issues specific to your car.

Definitely bring it back to dealership as others pointed out

  • Since the new problem it’s either a drain problem, or a not charging problem. Diagnosis will probably take a fair bit of trial and error. Could be as simple as a loose connection, but they are hard to track down. Could be a dud alternator, but you’d normally get a light on the dash for that.

Radio problem sounds a bit random and is probably in the radio unit itself.

    Seatbelt? I’d leave that alone.

And… for those that were interested in what the issue was:
The service department of the dealer wired the dashcam incorrectly. The ignition wire was connected to the circuit of the door light.
