Application for Registration - before Car Arrives at Dealer

Hi There,

Apologies if this is a stupid question - but I've purchased a new Kia which hasn't yet arrived at the dealer. The guy I'm dealing with has asked me to fill out an 'Application for Registration' (https://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/documents/about/forms/45070093-re…) however I don't have the VIN, engine number etc.

I asked about this and he's said fill in everything else and sign and he'll fill in VIN etc when the car arrives in showroom (ETA 28th Feb).

Wondering - is this normal? Is there any way he could put down some other random vehicles details and I'm suddenly registered with a random car?

Thanks in advanced.

might be because their commissions come in monthly and he wants the payment…

A bit unusual but as above likely to reach monthly target by the 28th.

The joys of commission selling I guess.

Looks like they are trying to sneak through an end of month sale. Might be some kind of bonus on registration numbers for the dealer. Sometimes stealerships will get a bonus from the manufacturer/importer if they get a certain number of vehicles registered before a set date (usually end of the month)

It's only for registration, fill it out. It isn't the contract of sale. Just make sure that when you go to pick the car up, they didn't register it on the 17/2/22 and you didn't get to pick the car up until middle of March some time, effectively cutting you out of 1 months worth of rego.

and 1 month less of warranty

  • Amazing - thank you everyone for your replies (and good heads up on checking the rego date too), have an awesome day! :)

Do it when you want and at a time that is convenient as the dealer gets plates in one day from service NSW. If the sales person wants it done ASAP then try to get something out of him for free, like a free service (not the 1K).

If the car is due in this month the Dealer will already have the vehicle Identifiers, and will almost certainly RDA the car this month should they wish to include it in their figures for feb.
If they are an Anvis dealer they will just allocate a plate . You completing or not completing the registration will make no difference to this process.
Having said that should your delivery roll over into early March, and they have RDA'd ( retail delivery advice), the vehicle on Feb 28th, you will have lost a few days of warranty.

We get people to sign the bulk licensing at point of sale, so we're not chasing you before delivery

    Totally normal

Just filled in a similar form. Vehicle not due for months, so it’s unlikey to be used as a way to record another sale for their books. That’s what the contract is for.

Thanks so much for your replies! I submitted it and feel more comfortable after reading these :)

  • Did you check your Legal obligations and responsibilities plus liabilities for when something Fraudulent may come of signing essentially a near blank official Government Form?
