Do I Have a Smart Meter or Not? Going Crazy

Hi all,

I have a EDMI Mk7C single phase meter hooked up to my townhouse. According to their website it is a smart meter.

Origin are telling me it's only a basic meter and does not have smart capabilities. So far I've only been able to talk to help desk people and haven't had a chance to ask a tech - but am I'm going crazy here, it's a smart meter right?

I've looked across various forums including Whirlpool and even Youtube and I've seen people referencing it to be a smart meter that lets them view daily usage.

Help?

Smart meter at the basic means it supports meter reads for TOD billing.

Then there are smarter meters and even smarter etc etc etc.

This is the smart meter feature that makes it smart for TOD billing:
Over 5000 days storage (2 channels, 30-minute intervals)

Some retailers do not allow end users to view daily usage as it does not have WIFI. Does Origin have support for viewing daily usage for smart meters that have a modem built it where they get the data remotely?

  • Meter being digital does not always mean its a smart meter. Ours was the same case. When we installed solar system, i had to contact our electricity retailer to upgrade our meter to smart meter.

Both device looks similar with the exception that the smart meter has a cable connected to the antenna on top of the meter box.

If your electricity retailer is telling you its not a smart meter, i would trust them.

Anyway, some electricity retailer offers free smart meter upgrade. Call around and ask.

  • I've got one of those. And I'm using Origin electricity.

It was described as a smart meter when I got it, and solar, but that was 12 years ago. I don't think it has gotten less smart, but maybe others have gotten more smart.

With regard to what the other posters are saying qualifies it as a smart meter or not, it does have TOD and definitely supported 30 minute interval billing from day one, and it does have an antenna, but the antenna is inside the device not on top of the meter box.

    • I guess ours has external antena as our meter box is made of metal.

      • That's something that has always puzzled me. My power box is metal too. How well can the mobile connection work when the antenna is inside a faraday cage? I saw inside the meter when it was being installed, and the modem and antenna are inside the bottom section of it.

    • I wonder how i can convince Origin it's a smart meter…

Might have to keep trying until I get an operator in the know.

  • It's definitely a smart meter/time of use meter but could be an older model with no remote communications so it can't be updated.

  • It's a smart meter
Ask to talk to the meter people at Origin, don't bother with the 'help' desk
The meter people are grouse to talk to

  • Quick update - Origin have agreed it's a smart meter but have said they can't/won't support it. However they've offered to upgrade it to a supported smart meter for free, which should be happening this month. So that's exciting. Thanks all for your help.
