Good Free (or Low Cost) DYI Will (Estate) Templates That Would Suit Someone with Savings and Shares (Wall Street and ASX)

Hi,

I seem to just keep running into websites that either provide templates with so little information or that end up charging once your information is entered. I have never had a will before but after a recent review my total worth is now over $100k in cash, cars and other physical junk and shares and I've started to have some bad medical issues recently.

Just wondering if anyone has found a template with enough detail on it to allow the adding of shares etc.
I have shares on the ASX (via Stake Australia) and on Wall Street (via Stake UK).

Also is just providing Account numbers / W-8BEN) and account and HIN numbers going to be enough information on the share side of things?

I am happy to pay if I'm going to get a much better product, but really don't want to spend a great deal as I don't own property etc

Edit: I also have done a formal NSW health advance care directive, so that side is covered

Thanks

    • Hey,

Thanks for the link. I did check this out before, but it a little too over simplified. I did get some key points from it that I will make sure are in whatever will I end up choosing (Likely will just mash many templates together).

      Thanks again mate

      • it wasn't perfect for me. I just jammed in the detail I wanted in a way I thought made my intentions clear.

I don't think there is any needs for HINs, etc. The executor can figure out assets for distribution.

  • If you are a member of a club ring them and ask if they have free help for creating wills. Do not go to the public trustee as the fees will eat up $10 to $20K and take a long long time (up to 2 years).

From personal experience don’t die with a US account open. It is a nightmare to close and reclaim for relatives. Involving IRS, up to nine months for a transfer certificate, affidavits, Public Notaries, apostilles from DEFAT certifying death certificate and probate as well as a plethora of forms and follow up phone calls in the middle of the night. Forms can be emailed whilst certified documents have to be posted. Pandemic hasn’t helped but now been going on for almost two years.

As for wills go to a local solicitor it’s only a few hundred dollars and it will be done right.
