[TAS] Free Beam eScooter Training at Mawson Place Concourse (45 Minute Ride) + $5 Credit @ Beam Hobart

A freebie for those in Hobart who want to have a training session with Beam tomorrow where you get to go on a 45 minute eScooter ride (normally $46.45 when hiring Beam) and at the end of it you get $5 credit (~11 minutes) for a future ride.

The event is completely free and no booking required. It goes from 1pm to 4pm at the Mawson Place Concourse.

And before anyone says "eScooters are illegal" - they've been legal in Tassie since 2021 on both the roads and footpaths.

      Nah. There's more 'advanced' things like your posture, how you feet are positioned, how to handle bumps and jumps etc. that make the experience better. Easy enough to learn on your own.

      If anything this is saving you about $50 with the free ride and credit. Can't complain about that!

    • have you seen 3 year old kids riding normal scooter …. these are just faster and you you don’t to learn to kick with the other leg ……

      ultimate you tube would be to film one of those mobility scooters elderly people speed around in crashing into an escooter on a footpath ….. where i live the foot path in the shopping strip is getting crazy with electrified transport like mobility scooters for elderly and escooters for people going to cafes ……

    do they teach you how to lean when you hit predestination so you don’t fall off and can keep on riding, doesn’t look cool when you crash into people and fall off …..

  • wonder if these will go the way of o-bikes …. where eventually people cut the locks and you could ride o bikes without paying ….. at least with these people could strip them for batteries and motors rather than dump into rivers or ponds …..had a look at one and a torx with security pin hole seems to be what you need to strip for electricals …..

    concern might be gps sending distress to scooter company while you strip for parts …….. so probably want to disable before taking home ……. let’s see if these things go the way of o-bikes but with recycle value ….. or people steal , repaint , put in new electricals and voila like rebirthing stolen cars, im confident there will be you tube video of person in a balaclava showing how it’s done eventually, was the case with o-bikes and how to remove the electronic locks ….problem with o-bike was heavy steel frame and no gears so had to be fit to ride unless the trip was down hill.

    how do these get recharged …..is there a van that collects, recharges and puts back on the street, if so must have gps that signals telemetry back to home ?

    o-bike failed as you had to be fit to ride, e-scooter don’t need any fitness at all and probably decent weight limit (120kg ???) might actually be the solution to,inner suburban short trip riding ….. provided you can find one for a trip back home unless you want to walk …… so far i have seen 3 different brands of e-scoters in the street between my house and the shops in bayside melbourne.

    • Batteries get swapped over by a van crew and they go around 24/7 for general maintenance, sanitising etc.

      Beam are using the commerical Segway models and they're mostly the Max Plus.

        Damn that seems like a relatively high cost operation, wonder how it's profitable.

        • At $1 unlocking fee and $0.45 a minute it doesn't take long for it to make money.

          • @Clear: That's way more expensive than I thought they'd charge. Seems like it would be more economical to buy your own escooter if you use it even semi regularly

            • @Jenny Death: Same for Neuron but their passes are better value. 3 days is $8.33 a day, 7 days $4.71 a day and 1 month is $1.50 a day. Limited to 90 minutes a day though.

              I have a Xiaomi Pro 2 myself and it's paid off already. Soon to be upgrading to a $1800 off-road scooter though.

              • @Clear: where i live bayside melbourne, 90 mins gets you to an from work , i cycle and get passed by escotters on the bike path, and you can pick up shopping on the way vs $8 train ticket and need to walk to and from station, and from station to office or home, etc.

  • found out why so many in my area, seems we are one of the councils trialing escooters on roads, bike paths and "shared pathways" which I pressume means shared with pedestrians (foot path) vs shared with cars (road). I think the recent death of a scooter rider being hit by a car in Pakenham will make people ride on footpath ….. hit a car you get come off worse, hit a pedestrian, pedestrian comes off worse, we have LOTS of km of bike paths so will be interesting how it goes, I cycle to work as we have lots of dedicated bike paths (not shared with cars) ….. what might kill positive feedback from pedestrians is people riding on footpaths in busy areas or too many being dumped in busy areas around cafes and eateries which happened with O-bikes …. the Lime E-bikes haven't been a problem ….. but probably not as many, O-bike probably cost $50 to make … e-bikes cost more and probably bigger target for parts stripping e.g batteries and motors … O-bike parts were custom fit so seats and things could not be re-used on normal bikes.

  • google lime scooter tear down and people are getting these and modding to do 40 kph already …… seems some people obtain legally in usa as lime sell used ones …..and some people illegally take off the street repaint and mod electronics ….add blue tooth adapter so talks to phone and send lock /unlock commands and remove sim so doesn’t call home with gps details ….
