Unable to access Ozbargain through adblock browser (Android)

Good afternoon

I've been using adblock browser on my Android for many years as my default browser and for some reason, it has suddenly stopped working. I am getting an error along the lines of this:

"
Error 1020

Ray ID: 6dbb54eca8ca6a15
2022-02-11 05:56:02 UTC
Access Denied

What happened?

This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks."

I tried with google chrome and not having any issues.

Any help is appreciated.

  • I've never had problems with Wipr adblocker. You could add OZB to your adblockers exceptions?

You could use the Brave browser https://brave.com/ which is an offshoot of Chrome and blocks ads well.
The only issue is that the Ozbargain depends on ad revenue and adblockers deny Ozbargain that revenue.

If OP is willing to use another browser they could just use their normal one like chrome or Firefox, and turn off ads on their settings

    • Thanks for the suggestion. I actually turn off adblock on ozbargain (one of the very few sites where I do) :)

I don't mind sites making money from some banners/ads and would turn off ad blockers for individual sites, but I use many more sites with a ridiculous amount of ads or popups - so turning blockers off/on is tedious. Gumtree is the worst. They have so much junk cluttering the screen now that you barely see any of the listings… particularly when most laptop screens are already like peering through a letterbox slot. Recently I turned ad blockers off to use Cashrewards, forgot to turn them back on, then went to Gumtree… I couldn't believe how little actual listing space was left now.

  • i also recommend Brave for desktop and android, its built on Chromium but with built in adblocker

i use Brave to browse ozbargain no problems

That is so brave of you

      • Brave also pays me about $10-$15 worth of Bat crypto a month

      • But is he stunning.

  • Same issue happened today. Same browser.

    • I've just moved onto Brave, it seems it is a lot smoother and able to support a lot more apps like "bitwarden". So far so good

  • Thank you!

  • Which exact "adblock browser" are you using? This one here?

We have been blocking one specific browser since Thursday night as it has been used by scammers to hack into a few OzBargain accounts that use passwords from Have I Been Pwned. It's interesting how that adblock browser uses the exact same user-agent as those scammers.

Edit: Okay I think I figured out which adblock browser it is — FAB Adblocker Browser, which also sells VPN access.

    • Thanks scotty, will use brave now

    • Yep that's the one, I have since uninstalled.

    • I use this browser too. Banning a whole browser seems like a bit of overkill.

      • You have to ask FAB why they are identifying themselves as Chrome/80 (Chrome from 2 years ago), and the bots trying to hack our accounts using random IP addresses on VPN are also identifying themselves with that exact old Chrome version down to the patch number.

  • I use the same browser and have the same problem. Have a lot of bookmarks so a pain if I have to change browsers. Haven't been in ozbargain as much, so I guess I've saved some money.

  • i was pointed to this thread by hamza23, and i'm getting that same error only i'm using chrome with adblock plus (desktop, not android)

  • I am disabling the firewall rule that blocks all visitors identifying themselves as Chrome/80.0.3987 — interestingly Ad Blocker browsers would use that rather than the current Chrome version. Wouldn't it letting the publishers blocking adblock users easier?

We still have an ongoing issue with hacker bots trying out all our use accounts using passwords from Have I Been Pwned. Note that it wasn't OzBargain that got compromised, but some users reuse passwords that they use on other websites that got compromised.

    • thanks! working from my old-arse chrome browser again ^_^

  • Yay Ad Blocker Browser again.

  • Anyone having issues with this again?

    • Yes. Having issues accessing Ozargain for the last week using Adblock Browser 3.3.0 on Android.
[edit]: No issues using the Samsung "Internet" browser.

      • I installed brave browser!
