Looking for some advice on interstate car please

I am looking to buy a car in SA or VIC, I live in NSW. Firstly, how can I pay for it without being scammed? Whats the usual process for that do I pay half upfront and the other half when I get it or something?
What headaches am I going to run into? Are there big fees?

I have never done anything like this, just wondering if there are things like fees and transport costs so high that its not worth it. Or if you guys know of any mistakes I should avoid.

Thanks !

    1. Don’t. Unless it is a rare or unusual car that you MUST have.
    2. If it is a rare or unusual car you must have, go and visit it or have a trusted person inspect it.
    3. Don’t. Another car will come along closer to you.
    • Fair enough thanks for the advice. Is it easy to be scammed?

      • Of course it’s easy to be scammed. When you can’t see the car it could have all sorts of problems that aren’t apparent in photos and video. It may not even exist and be photos stolen off the internet.

The possible exception is buying a new car, but even then there’s been threads here complaining about how the buyer received a car that didn’t match their expectations. Typically wrong model year or manufacturing dare compressor to the contract.

If you have to ask the answer will be yes.

Airfares are cheap at the moment, if spending a decent amount of money, best to get on a plane and go and see the car.

And drive it back. Yeah you're right.

Wouldn’t bother. Any money you think you are saving will be eaten up by transport costs.

And if you want to be scammed, this is basically a textbook way to get scammed. From the outright stealing of your money and giving you nothing, to selling you something you can’t see and negating to accurately describe the vehicles condition and faults.

  • Are cars actually selling for these insane prices though in sydney? Like 10k more than brand new, with 40,000kms on the clock

    • Might get the odd sucker to pay over price. Most probably won’t, but may pay over what was considered normal pre covid. Listed price doesn’t equal sale price.

Fly there, conduct the transaction as you otherwise would. Drive the car back.

    • Agree with this. Not all interstate sellers are scammers. But be on your guard. Also dealers are less prone to complete scams though it can be argued that the prices they set their vehicles are a scam!

Just keep your eyes wide open and don't send any deposits. Be over cautious. Fly down and handle it in person. If it is on car sales or similar, you can also organise a mechanical inspection of the vehicle before you go there.

  • Hell no!

Cars aren't cheaper in SA and Vic than NSW. If you're seeing cars you think look cheaper there's probably something wrong with them.

Just hold out for something local unless you're looking for something very specific, it's not worth the headache.

I came to say exactly that. I live in Adelaide and cars usually cheaper in the Eastern states. Unless it's one of those rare, expensive cars for collectors, it would be wise to avoid buying a regular car from SA if you live in NSW.

  • It’s hard enough making a judgment call on second hand cars when you can actually inspect them in person.

Why consider buying one sight unseen interstate?
So much room for big problems.

Also, Unless your saving like 3k minimum there’s no value in going down that route. And if you are saving that much, is it legit? Why is it cheaper?

This question could be in an FAQ page… gets asked daily

      They’ll never use a FAQ anyway 😂

If half these people used a search function they would see the 50 other people that ask the same question.
