free modem for 24 month contract, otherwise $216 for modem, not a deal
who wants to stuck for 4G for 24 months?

    • Switch to 5G, pay no cancellation fee: existing Optus nbn and 4G Home Internet customers can switch without paying plan cancellation fees.

Not sure what happens with modem.

        landfill

        • Yep, because they won't allow you to unlock it. They wield the power to unlock and choose the landfill option instead.

      • great if you re in a 5g area sadly I'm not

  • What if you already have an Optus compatible 4G modem? (Or pick up one for pennies on gumtree/eBay)

Are they going to force you to buy another one, and have you throw the old perfectly fine one onto global warming inducing landfill?

That's the rant I gave them last time, and they stfu about it.

If this offer is available in store/through the phone/live chat, you can technically get the plan without the modem. The way the plan is allocated on the system is that it is a plan + modem, if the modem isn't allocated at during the assignment process then when you cancel, the modem cost (payout cost) is set at $0.

You can confirm at the contract generation stage, where it will just have the single line of the 4G HWBB Plan without the B818/B525 modem. The cancellation payout cost (i.e. minimum cost) should just be the corresponding first month cost.

The sales team is notoriously dodgy, same as a lot of Optus stores, chances are you'll find a sales consultant willing to allocate a plan that way (or them not realising due to insufficient training). Or you can say that another team offered you this deal without the modem and they'll probably process it without asking questions.

If the offer is only available on the website, you can probably get the call centre sales team to match.

    • In short yes, they force you to sign up with another modem, even if it is exactly the same. I told a sales person that I already had a 5G modem (intending to buy one from fb marketplace for 20 bucks) and they said no must take new model because it's 'different'. It is their only hook. Not sure how they can say no lock in contract when if you leave earlier you much pay for the modem…

    • just be careful they cancel your internet for using your own modem. That's what happened to me even though they said i could use my own modem when i signed up. Internet just stopped working one day and support could not help

  • Only problem with this plan no traffic shape after limit instead ge charged

      They said:
"What happens if I run out of data?
You'll automatically get 40GB extra data for $2 up to 5 times.
After that, your speed will be reduced to 1.5Mbps."

I just signed up with Telstra at JB HiFi. $69 per month for 2 years 400GB and speed reduced to 1.5 after, with $500 gift card where I later used to purchase a phone outright. No modem. But its working perfectly with an older Huawei modem i had (only 4G) with 40MBS during peak time. Same time my mobile shows (5G) 140MBS. When i had Optus peak time speed dropped to 5MBS. Very happy with this and just keeping any eye for a cheap 5G modem. Tried to get the Disney promo from the chat, but failed. Will try again with another rep later :)

I already with Optus 4G home internet plan, month to month $69 a month for 500gb. Plus ( 10gb for $10 up to 50gb $50 ) if I go over the data limit.

Today I changed to this new plan via online chat without modem. So now I pay $59 a month month to month plan and first month free, plus ( 40GB foe $2 up to 200GB $10 ) if I go over the data limit.

    Thanks Op for sharing.
