New season pass just announced for this, maybe a complete edition coming soon

    • +13

      Mario Kart 8 Deluxe… Deluxe!

A bit doubtful though considering how much this has sold, doubt there'd be many people left who don't own it.

Plus the DLC is going to be included in the NSO expansion pack.

      • Won't that mean an active NSO expansion subscription to use it ongoing. Once off DLC purchase might be a better play.

Or wait for the inevitable super deluxe edition in 2025

        • +2

Once off is always better, but they want to push people to pay for their existing services somehow.

Super Deluxe edition would be nice but I personally don't think it'll be worth it for them to sell, unless it's some sort of digital only pack and even then, especially being nintendo, it'll just be the same price as the base game + DLC price.

    • +9

48 additonal tracks is going to be insane.

      • What the hell - have there been additional tracks this whole time? I've never bothered to pay for the online pass…

        • +5

Announced today and coming soon, I believe.

          • @Jonzay: It’s coming in 6 waves, 8 courses per wave. Not sure the time frame between each wave or when the first one releases

Edit: first wave is 18th March with the rest releasing between then and the before the end of 2023

      • New game would of been even more insane but I guess a cash grab is insanity too.

    • +4

Probably won't be for a while since they're releasing courses in batches rather than all at once.

DLC will be available for $37.50. Australian pricing. Ouch. But I guess I would rather pay that than have to fork out $60+ for a whole new game.

      • +5

$25 USD, so thats about right. I expected worse.

      • +5

Not awful value for money though. Base game has 48 tracks, and the $37.50 means you get another 48 by the end of next year, essentially doubling the game.

Just wish they would do it for Super Mario Party as well, 4 maps for $69 is criminal.

    • +1

The new DLC will be available for free if you have already paid for online + N64 add on (according to Nintendos promo on YouTube)

      • +1

Do you get to keep the DLC once your online ends?

        • +8

          No.

          • +3

@BakerBen91: Looks like I’ll just buy the DLC on its own

            Thanks for the info

            • +1

@Twisty: Just share a family account. Check the OzB forums - something like $15 a year

              • @appxl: If the DLC is $37.50 that would be equivalent of almost 5 years and a half of the expansion pack when sharing a 8 members family account (2.7 years if you include the cost of basic online).

            • @Twisty: Honestly being able to play the DLC only while having the expansion pass basically means I completely ignore any DLC that's included with it.

    • The new courses will be slowly released over the course of nearly two years. We might get a complete edition after they've all released.

This also means that there's not going to be a Mario Kart 9 until 2024 at the earliest, 10 years after Mario Kart 8 originally launched.

      • +1

Unlikely we'll see MK9 on Switch after today's announcement.

        • Yeah, most likely not. Perhaps as a launch title for their next system.

          • +1

@dano: I wouldn't be surprised if it's a launch title for the next system but they launch it on Switch also, similar to BoTW and even in a way Mario Kart 8. 48 new tracks is great though

        • :(

    • Why don't you make a sub deal for this?

    • Are there any benefits over pre-order the DLC rather than waiting and buying once it's released?

  • i think this is the first game for switch, and the price still strong!!

    • +7

Breath of the Wild is the first Nintendo-published game for the Switch. And yes, the price is still "strong".

  • -3

Cheap consoles, limited and expensive games.

    • +14

It’s a niche gaming market that no one else really competes with.
(Family friendly and portable and made for mulitplayer)

    • +3

Just some of the most influential games of all time on limited hardware.

Some of the other approaches are make the same game over and over again (Ubisoft), have the players make the fun for themselves in the "loive services", turn everything into a boring grind unless you pay money (Blizzard), turn children into gambling addicts (2K EA).

I dunno, I kinda like Nintendo.

      • -1

dont worry, family members do too, but the niche market results in expensive games compared to other consoles.

  • yeah I remember buying the physical for about 50 back in 2019 lol

  • -3

If you haven't bought this game on Switch by now then you're seriously doing something wrong.

    • +8

What if I have it on Wii u???

      • +3

I’ve held off this long because of the Wii U but this is going to make me double dip

    • Well I told myself it will go on sale again….. And i waited two years for it to happen :D

  • Still amazing that prices are this strong for a game this old. Glad I took the plunge and soldered a modchip on to my oled (the price of which was 2 games anyway at the time).

    • +1

Does that mean you need to refrain from online play though?

      • You can still play genuine games online and leave downloaded single player ones for the chip.

  • +1

Gonna wait for Mario Kart Double Deluxe Edition.

    • +2

With a mode that works like Double Dash?

      • +4

"We're adding 48 new characters to your kart!"

  • +2

I'm gonna be a geeb and get Chocobo GP instead lol

  • +2

    Meh

Plays like all the MKs before.

I think Nintendo games need a big overhaul!

    • Nah what about how they went in an entirely different direction for Zelda, then re-released their worst-reviewed Zelda game that actually had a big hand in inspiring them to change directions?

  • +1

Bit pricey still, for a now relatively old mariokart game.. I'm glad I got it for free with my switch

    • -3

      Free ?
Sell your switch and see if the next dude get it lol :)

      • +1

Well I didn't pay for Mariokart, and I can play it. How much more free can you get?

        • -2

I don't think you would be a smart dude and keep it new factory sealed .
That is about the only way the next person that buys it from you will get the game .

          • @popsiee: They never said that its free on every switch…

Nuttapillar got it free, and thats a fact

            • -1

@freoleo: If you notice my point .
It is the game is stuck with the nut and cannot be passed on .
I'm not so concerned about free.

Besides that I can get the physical version for OP's price and sell for all my dough back . 0 Back for OP deal and unsellable if you wanted to sell .
This deal is dumb . Eshop purchase should only be for low value games .

              • +1

@popsiee: Who cares about your point, the other guy got it for free, your point doesn't change that.

Also this is the perfect Eshop game, its a game you always want on your console and a game that will be revisited many times.

                • @freoleo: Do I need to waste my ti9me more here ?
Its like chatting to a wall :)

          • +1

@popsiee: It came with a code actually, and once I activated it, it was linked to my account. So there's no packaging to keep sealed.

    • -8

Same! It's a joke that these old ass games still a ripoff! That and ripoff Nintendo subscription is the reasons why I game more on my PS4 over my switch!!
Nintendo is literally the crApple of video gaming industry when it comes to prices, and that's never a good thing for us consumers.
      Still waiting for Zelda sales….

      • +1

How many dollars worth of fun could you have had by now instead of waiting for a deep discount that will probably never come? It's been 30% off on the eShop and cheaper physical

        • -4

Forgot to mention my huge backlog!
So yeah I'm getting more fun by not wasting money on ripoff ancient games. This is something greedy corporations fanboys can't seem to grasp at : patient, and that help lead to boycotting anti-consumer corps.
Never spend over $40 on games, not hard to do…

          • +1

@halil23: If you don't think it's worth it then don't pay it, that's fine. I put something like 200 hours into it so feel like I got plenty of value.
Some games get cheap fast and that's fine, I've bought a lot of games on other consoles at big discounts a few years after release, but if there's a Nintendo title I want I know release is normally about as cheap as it's going to get.

      • -1

If Nintendo couldn't sell their first party titles for basically full RRP for the life of a console generation you basically don't have Nintendo anymore. I'd rather pay $50 and enjoy some of the best games ever made. I guess you're not a true gamer.

        • -1

          So you're gatekeeping for gamers?
          Sad.

Lot's of people with Gaming PCs, which has the biggest catalogue, longest backwards compatibility, and the biggest discounts. But they have the fastest hardware and the most open platform. All of these are the exact opposite to "Nintendo". I guess they mustn't be true gamers.

          • @Kangal: I have a PC, not sure why you’re trying to turn it in to a PC vs Nintendo war… that’s just sad.

If you don’t understand what makes Nintendo special that’s your loss. What’s important is that you enjoy your gaming where ever you choose to game and not become a raving neckbeard yelling online about how your video game machine is better (so sad) and how this other thing people enjoy is crap (so very sad).

True gamers just enjoy gaming, fan boys are just sad.

            • -1

              @Sidog: Nice strawman there.
This was never about PC vs Nintendo, this was about you gatekeeping about who qualifies as a "gamer". Your words not mine:

              I guess you're not a true gamer.

The comparison was to show how different PC is to Nintendo, and that by your definition they fail to qualify. Now I see you're changing the definition:

              True gamers just enjoy gaming

I think the market is big enough for diverse range of styles, but that's my 2c. I say if people want to criticize Nintendo, I say have at it, and if they want to criticize PC well more power to them. At the end of the day, it's up to them to decide what they want and who they are.

      • You’ll be waiting a long time tbh

  • Was going to buy this in advance of getting the Switch OLED; apparently you can’t do this on your account without having a Switch. Great game and especially with the start of new packa coming out.

    • I rememeber wanting to do the same thing just before getting a switch. There was a game on sale and I couldn't buy it becuase I didn't have a switch yet. Seems kinda silly. Not sure if it's the same for other consoles or not.

    • +2

Find a friend with a switch, create your account on that, buy your game then log out.

  • +1

Thanks Peanut48. I was going to buy this and a Switch OLED y'day but got distracted. This morning I wake to find the Ozbargain god smiling down on me! =)

  • Is it worth going digital or getting the physical cartridge?

I got a Switch OLED in January 2022 and started playing BoTW (cartridge).

    • +2

      Personal preference,
Physical - can buy 2nd hand and/or trade in for lower price, can sell 2nd hand or trade in for future purchase, satisfaction of owning something physical
Digital - don't need to haul cartridges around, no risk or damage/lost, don't need to change cartridges between games.

If you only play one game during a period, and never return to it, then physical is cost effective, eg certain RPG, action games, etc. But MK tends to be a game that you replay occasionally, friends, etc. so digital might be easier.

    • +2

Mario Kart is the one game that I would always take digital, its a game that will be revisited many times and is good for a quick pick up and play without the hassle of changing game cards

      • +2

I ended up ordering the physical version of MK8D from Amazon Australia for $59 yesterday. Panasonic sent me an AU$200 Amazon Australia gift card on Saturday. I entered both rounds of their eneloop share-and-win Instagram competitions and won during each round.
