a Wi-Fi Modem Router

hey

I am thiking of getting TPG unlimited $60 month adsl 2+ plan. If I give them $10 more a month for 24 months ($240) they give me a new wifi modem router.?

Instead of paying them, whats a good modem router you guys recommend and cause I am not super tech savy can you base your choice to fit any of these categories:

like a Kia = el-cheapo does job but prob wont last long and pretty basic

like a Honda = Good price for a few more features and reliable

like a Mercdes = Cost inflated but it does it all and super reliable

like a Rolls Royce = What the Queen uses to surf the net

  • I would recommend the cisco 857w, you can buy them for about $100 off ebay, but they are very difficult to setup but is what I have.

I find the Billion VGP 7401 R3 very good as well apart from the model I had, has problems with wifi. Good thing about this model also has a phone ATA port so you can connect a phone to it for voip.

$84.70 if you enter the dealer code. Also out of stock until the start of next month.

Sorry I don't know much about car models but inbetween a honda and merc.

  • I bought myself a 7800L a few months ago ($112), its ultra reliable - Would Classifity it as Merc in quality Honda in price.
There are billions with alot more features that come with merc price.

Massivley tweakable I have not even played with many settings.
I have had to reboot it once in the entire time I have had it.

Also, as mentioned above a few modem retailers sell the modems cheaper if you sign up for TPG through them. Warcom comes to mind.

  • I just bought below modem last weekend after price matching it with office works; cost me $68.68

One of my friend has been using it for a about 18 months or so and its got amazing reception & quite fast speed. I would put this in Honda category i suppose

  • I got a modem from tpg when I signed up a while ago.. rubbish I say

eventually brought one from outside… I now use a billion one, great product

  • Hi bargrin. I believe you saw my post already (I have replied your PM), but in case you need the link, this is link to my post selling my Billion 7404VNPX modem router http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/68031. Let me know if you're still interested. Thanks

  • Thanks for info

What about this at kia price level

    • I would avoid that modem because it only has the older and slower "G" wireless/WIFI. Your modem/router wants to have "N" wireless, mostly.

I reckon tp-link is not a bad brand as I use a tp-link 1043nd router with a cheap billion 5200 modem, that set up is a few years old now and there are currently better and faster N routers around but that set up will cost $100 from msy and I would rate it a VW amorak.

  • Most people do not use wireless for their computers, mainly just for laptops and mobile phones, they tend not to require as much bandwidth. I think wireless G is still very acceptable and wireless N still has some problems as well as using 2 bands in 2ghz and 5ghz, I think it's abit dodgy.

  • Thamks, the billion 7800n appears to be all the rage but pricy at $140, the netcomm that tpg offer for $99 dosent look bad, it even got usb slot for external drive.

But also found this tplink at netplus for $59, so back to kia price levls for a N router

    • That's a good choice. It uses a Broadcom chipset, which is generally good.

      • Yeah cool, i been reading broadcom chipset is the go so this top of list.

Was hoping to get somethn from nb as got jb gift card but i think they have limited choice of belkn or d-link.

Does belkin andd-link have broadcom chips?

  • One more question, is there a certain type of modem i need to use vpn and unblock-us service?

    • I have a Billion 7300n and it supports VPN's… I think VPN support is a feature that many modems have by default.

      • Cool thanks, my understanding is unblock-us is not a vpn so works on any modems but vpn is more tricky to setup and easier if modem has certain user friendly features…..i am totally layman at this stuff!

  • IF you're looking for cheap you can buy Telstra's Premium Home Network Gateway for $48 from Telstra stores. It's wireless N, 2x USB and four 100mbit ports. Its made by technicolour so it's not a terrible brand either.

    • Cool, and. Should be able to get that from Jb hifi, will check it out tomorrow. Thks

  • +2

THE TP-Link W8960N, I use TPG too. And it works like a charm. It's cheap and its range is excellent. =)

    • I settled on the TP-Link W8960N two moths ago after lots of whirlpool research. Very good reliability V features V Chipset V price. I could not be happier with it -easy install and has not dropped out or needed a reboot since I first set it up. Note that there are others models with the same model number (or very close) but differ in the letters on the end which are very different in terms of spec and price.

  • Yes the MSY link above is correct and where I got mine from for $58.

Part of the reason I picked this model over another one was that the broadcom chipset (same as billion 7800) was more suited to ADSL2 connections more than 2-3km (long lines with big attentuation levels) from the exchange (I'm +3Km out).
