Internet dropouts with 5G Modem

Looking for some tech help with this one

I have a telstra 5G modem (Optus sim) which plugs into my Xiaomi Mi AIoT Wi-Fi 6 AX3600

I get internet dropouts which require turning both modem and router off for a few mins then it kicks back on.

Is this something I just have to live with or is there some better troubleshooting for this as it seems to happen frequently…

  • Same here with Spintel. Could be the tower issue. Call you provider and complain and bitch and moan like I did and there might be some improvement.

    • Can't wait to be that guy hahaha

  • My guess is that your using a portable modern designed for short term usage as an always on home modem.

Maybe see if it has a self timing feature that allows it to reset itself daily through the middle of the night?
Turn off any unnecessary features of the modem that might be chewing CPU time and making the device work harder than it needs to.
Check for a firmware update that might improve stability.
Lastly, a cooling fan might help.

Ultimately, buying a dedicated 5G Home modem should resolve your issues… or even a 4G home modem.

  • My experience with my Optus 5G dropouts -

My private VPN subscription (a private DNS server - adblocker and parent-mode app blocker), causes my 5G optus modem to drop out .

The wifi stays active but the connection from modem to tower drops until I reboot it. I assume Optus is kicking the connection due to use of this specific private DNS

Telstra does the same on an NBN connection I have . Several times a day it cuts out.

My solution was to disable use of the private VPN on all devices in my house .Haven't had any dropouts since.

    • Must be something else for me as I don’t use a private VPN

  • Not sure if you fixed this but I had this issue with my Optus Nokia unit and believe Telstra use the same one.
USB fans…. Added one at the bottom pushing and one on top pulling and my daily drop outs are gone…..not a single one since I did it

    • Really?? What fan and what’s the modem you have
