Portable Radio Repair and Recycle

Just got back from the in-laws where we found out that their portable radio is no longer working - the battery components are rusted. They were planning to drop it off at their council's e-waste centre later this week when my FIL mentioned that perhaps it could be useful to students who are learning to repair electronics.

I know that there are charities that accept donation of old toys for repair and recycle by senior members of the community for distribution to needy families in the community. Does anyone here know if there are charities/schools or other organisations that accept electronic items for repair and recycle?

Check and see if you can run an external power source in and keep it running?

Lots of Radio had a plug for 6V DC

You're right - FIL confirmed that it has "AUX input". They used to use the radio when they were outside gardening so prefer the portability of battery power.

Thanks for the link - will call tomorrow.

AUX input is not for power. Did he mean AC input?

        • oops - FIL confirmed yes when I asked him & then read out what was on the box so I didn't question it.

So, not able to plug it in for power.

Donation places will bin it as once the batteries leak it is not work trying to fix as the acid can travel and eat metal where you do not expect it to.

    • I think that's why my FIL suggested it would be good as a project for someone who is interested in fixing it as a hobby or to learn.

      • Make sure you tell them on the phone when you call them that batteries have leaked so that you do not waist their time.

        • Absolutely - full disclosure upfront.

I'll admit that I wouldn't even think twice about recycling a portable radio - if it's broken, I'd just toss it in the bin.

    • Same here.

  • Outdated technology
There are no students repairing this shite
E recycle to make yourself feel nice
Good excuse to buy them a new radio as a gift

Depends on the casing, if its old Bakelite or earlier plastic theyre collectable just as ornaments

    • If only! It's in as-new condition externally plus they kept the box but only 5 years old so not vintage.

  • Recycle and move on
