[Solved] Mower Solution Advice Needed - Two Level Area with Stairs

First time owning property with lawn and didn't have lawn in home country… so dad can't help! he suggested to pour concrete. my neighbour told me petrol is best but I need to be over 50 to be sold one. he lied trying to sell his own to me. I don't trust him for advice anymore. Told me I can buy one of those pushy things that I had seen in cartoons. It gets stuck and very hard to push.

this property I got has around 250sqm lawn which has wide leaves. the yard is flat but it is 2 meters above street. There is retaining walls then on street there is this 1meter wide. nature strip which is narrow leave lawn.

what should I get for mowing? I have power outlet access close to both. on street level from carpark next to it. on yard at the deck.

Among Robot, 240v, petrol, battery what set you recommend?

If you are worried about the stairs, the lightest and most practical will be a battery mower with plastic deck.

thanks! acted on your answer as it had 3+. Guy at Bunnings gave me an Ozito for 200. weights only 10. Did nature strip with initial charge and easily carried upstairs. tested on lawns upstairs and cuts it not problem.
      Thanks for everyone's help

      • The new Ozito battery mowers are actually very good with excellent warranty
        Hard to beat!

    • thanks. a battery powered one was same price. so went with that. my local Bunnings didn't have it to see in person. Thanks for help tho

If you want something cordless, light, and relatively cheap go for a Ryobi 18V one Lawn Mower.

For something more expensive, more solid, and better quality an EGO battery mower is one of the best available.

Cheap corded mowers are also available from somewhere like Bunnings if you don't mind dragging an extension lead around with you. (Easy to drag up stairs though)

    • pretty much did what you said. But got scared as they had few returned Ryobis, so picked up an Ozito

Nothing wrong with Ozito, they have a 5 year replacement warranty on Power X Change products. That's an above average warranty.

        • And build is compatible with Ryobi at half the price!

My side-of-a-hill house has about 20m of elevation change between the letterbox and top lawn, with about 500m2 to mow. Several sets of stairs and steep slopes.
The best is the lightest mower. I had a petrol one that was light and a bit narrow. It was ok. I had a plug in electric. It was good, but the lead was tedious.
Now have the ozito steel deck battery (plus another pair of batteries). It is quite light, and about as powerful as the petrol.
Big advantage in ease of use and pollution.

thanks. took your advice and got a light battery powered Ozito. First experience is good. even my partner was happy to push it around. so easy to carry across stairs

    Just get one of these
    https://www.bunnings.com.au/products/garden/garden-tools/law…
Yes it's more manual work but it's lighter and gets the job done.

    • Thanks for advice. got the Saxon one. unfortunately I am too weak for it :). The blade gets stuck. For the wheel to have traction, I have to push down which then cuts really low. guy at Bunnings said you should have clean, short and dry lawn. Keeping the one I bought, but also got a battery powered one.

      • Hmmm
My one you can adjust the cutting height and its not easy
        But gets the job done

Assuming you got power I’d 100% get this
    https://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-1200w-305mm-lawn-mower_p01…

The best for awkward places lawns and only 8kg

    • Thanks. went with Ozito as you said. Despite being sceptical of battery, I got a battery one. First runs show it has enough power.

You don’t muck around! 7hrs between asking, purchasing, testing and responding to posts.

Battery mowers are OK, but don’t have the ultimate power of petrol. However, in a situation with terracing and stairs they are ideal because they are light weight, even lighter without battery, and don’t get as hot or have fuel to spill as you lift the mower to the next level. What you lose in power you gain in convenience

    • lol… yeah thought I do nature strip this Sunday before neighbours complain. You are right, I didn't even think of being hot for a petrol one! thanks for the help

I'm most worried about your neighbour, sounds like a pathological liar and con artist. I wouldn't trust them in future. I'm sure a 16 year old could walk into Bunnings and buy a petrol mower.

Perhaps OP missed the tone/context of the comment re 50yos buying petrol mowers. Could have been a comment about younger peeps recognising that battery/electric is the future and that only old codgers buy petrol mowers because they don’t understand technology.

Anyway, I’m glad I’ve seen the light. Haven’t purchased petrol for home gardening in well over 7 years. Battery all the way now, and before I got a battery mower I had a corded electric for a year or two. Line trimmer, hedger, chainsaw, blower etc all battery too.

    • He was just running a freshman joke on me. Like when you send someone to buy blinker fluid

  • @Euphemistic yes, he was joking of course. And you are right, he is an older dude and has less faith in lifespan of battery. I do respect him a lot as his house is immaculate.

Go something basic and light…. something you can toss around. Look at electric. Don't worry about cumbersome catchers… if there is grass, simply buy a rake.

    • thanks..yeah basically did as you said. a plastic deck ozito. It is easy to carry through stairs
