Car Rental - US

Hi,

I'm travelling to the US in July-August and am planning on renting a car for part of this trip.

The first part would be driving from Nashville to Dallas over 8 days.

The second part would be driving from LA to San Fran in a giant loop around California over 7-10 days.

Preferred vehicle for the first trip would be a 4WD, and for the second trip a convertible. Ultimately though, car availability will not get in the way of a bargain! :)

I've heard car hire can be very expensive in the States and some of the quotes I've gotten are way too expensive. Others seem way too cheap (worried about hidden costs).

Can anyone recommend a company they have had personal experience with that won't break the bank?

Other info: I'll be 26 year old male when travelling, and would like to nominate a second driver (friend, same age).

Thanks for any info in advance.

Plus the more elaborate the car the higher the price and less ability to negotiate. Keep in mind that currently in California the gas prices are really high, friends in the US tell me it even reached $5 a US gallon (3.5L).

Convertibles sound nice but if you cant fit all your belongings in the boot (trunk) it can be a magnet for thieves

Also avoid one way rentals, you pay much higher price than returning it to the location you rented from. In CA LAX is often the cheapest

  • Just saw this post and thought I'd mention Travel Jigsaw http://www.traveljigsaw.com.au/

We have been to the US 3 times and have used them each time. They offer great prices and include all insurances. Worth a look for a comparison.

  • See Www.standbyrelocs.com

Ask for extra days on relocations at additional cost.

Some insurers cover excesses on motorhomes - ask if they cover USA rentals.

Make sure you read carefully the rental contracts and insurance contracts.

Also worth considering - read the terms etc - is:
