Realme 7 5G 128GB Flash Silver/Mist Blue $399 + Delivery ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ JB Hi-Fi

131

Was looking at phones at JB today and liked the look of this. Came home to do more research and noticed it was actually $40 off (regular price $439).

Looks like a great phone for the price. It has dual sim, expandable memory and a huge battery.

It also has pretty promising reviews in the JB website.

Where are these promising reviews? They aren't in the description.

    • Sorry, on the actual listing. Updated :-)

Gee whizz. Sometimes you have to baby the sheep and give them absolutely everything they demand. 🤔🤦🏻‍♂️

Picked this up for my wife 6 months or so ago at Officeworks for $247 with free wireless earbuds. Decent phone for $247… not sure about $399 though.

    • Yeah I got this back nearly a year ago I think. Good phone, pity I've cracked the screen….

  • Off topic, will this or any 5G smartphones suitable for permanent 5G hotspot as home internet setup? My area is a NBN dead zone and 4G is hopelessly slow.

Dedicated 5g modems are preferred, although if you are doubling up with a model, generally the best bets would be the flagships (although with some research you may find one using a x55 or sometjing but its rare in cheaper phones)

      • Yeah but a dedicated 5G modem is around $500.

Also got it a out 6 months or so ago at $320 odd as a back-up phone - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/633474

Performs very well and would say you won't be disappointed at about the $399 price range.

For the specs and performance you're going to struggle to find anything that matches It for feature's

    • 120hz screen (Apple only just introduced this to their iPhone range l - makes scrolling/navigating very fast and fluid)

    • 5000mah battery is rare to find in phones. Massive standby life and easily gets you through a day even at heavy use

    • VOLTE & VOWIFI works out of the box with Telstra and Optus that I've tried (unlike some import phones)

    • The MediaTek processor actually surprised me as I am a power user and was more than happy with it's performance.

    • Regular monthly updates since I've had it

Only thing I disliked was a the mono speaker and lack of OLED panel but if you need a spare phone or a phone from a retail store in Australia then you can't go wrong.

Though if you don't mind importing and paying a little bit more. Go the Poco F3 or X3 Pro.

Only $40 off their regular price.

Definitely not the cheapest it's been but it you've broken your phone or need an urgent replacement it's probably the best price/performance phone that you can get immediately.

It's not a super crazy bargain like past JB deals but decent if you need something now.

I bought this phone on ebay when it was discounted and I think I only paid 200ish for it. It's a great phone even with 399 price tage.

  • Looks like it went to $319 in June last year on Amazon.

  • Wish Realme will do another mass discount on the X3 Superzoom again. Much better than this phone for less. sigh

    • I was tossing up between the Realme 7 & X3 superzoom when the 7 launched last year. Wound up going with the X3, which I got for $399 on sale and am very happy with it 11 months later. Am considering getting the 7 as a replacement for a family members ageing iPhone 6s though, especially if Realme sales come up again.
Overall I have been impressed with Realme's product.

Great phone, however $399 is expensive.
I bought it on 1 July 2021 for $275.00 from Bing Lee via eBay with bonus BUDS Q.
Happy with the phone, except that the battary now doesn't last as long as before.
Good news is that the stock camera has become great after the firmware update about 6 or 7 months ago.

Also if people weren't aware, Realme is part of the BBK Group which owns Oppo, OnePlus, Vivo and Realme

Even though they have different management and marketing teams, they all effectively come out of the same factory.
This phone is on Android 11 and should get one more major update to Andorid 12 sometime this year. But security updates will keep happening.

To be fair, I haven't notice much of an upgrade from Android 10 upwards. It wasn't like a few years back when Android was in it's infancy and new features would be rolled out.
The Android platform is quite mature and most of what you want or need in a smartphone should already be covered.

When buying a smartphone, It's best to research what a companie's policy is in relation to secuirty updates, frequency and length.
Major firmware updates would be a secondary prority after that as they tend to just be quality of life improvements.
