[Back Order] Hand-Drawn Portrait Print on Canvas - 2 A4 copies from $89.95 (Was $179.90) + $9.95 Delivery @ Notch Potch

810
OZBFRESH2FOR1

EDIT: Due to overwhelming demand (and having only one artist), we are happy to continue receiving orders, however further orders will be sketched in late Feb / early Match. I'll make sure to confirm this with any of you via email if/when you place an order. Thanks for the love!

Hey OB crew!

I've just finished redesigning a website and thought I'd share a coupon with this amazing community.

We're offering portraits that are hand-drawn on an iPad Pro by our artist and printed on high-quality fabric canvas at a print shop in Melbourne. These are individually hand-drawn and not converted using software (see for yourself - https://www.instagram.com/notch.potch/reels/). They take time and dedication, and our artist puts a lot of care into each and every piece.

Prices vary depending on the size of the canvas starting at $89.95 for an A4-sized portrait.

We're offering two copies of the same portrait for the price of one for the first 10 orders using the coupon code.

For an additional $30, you can get a digital copy of the portrait (this will be sent as a PSD+PNG so it can be edited and used however you like).

The offer is valid for all our portrait options:

Once you make a purchase, you'll be asked to send us photos of the subject you'd like sketched and our artist will be in touch to discuss options/approval.

Some examples of our latest pieces:

One final note: Feel free to critique the website. I'm only a hobbyist so I'm sure there's room for improvement.

Cheers
Notch Potch

I have several questions for the first image…

    • +3

      Hahaha! Yoghurt!

  • +2

    Website looks great! Well done!

    • Thank you. Much appreciated

  • +1

Impressive portraits OP. How many hours does the average portrait take to make for your artist?

    • Our artist says "thank you!"
Just checked one of the latest portraits and that took her just over 3 hours. It was for a dog that passed away, so she poured quite a lot of emotion into that one.

      • Any chance you can show me the one of this dog you mention?

        • +2

If you check out our homepage gallary, look for Pancho. He is the amazing dog that I mentioned earlier.

  • Frame included?

    • No frame. We might offer frames in the future. However we make sure these are printed on standard sizes, so you'll be able to find plenty of options.

    • +16

I'm glad you were able to find a simpler way to do this for yourself. However, I can assure you that all our customers are always impressed when they receive the finished product.
Each individual line is hand-drawn rather than simply vectorising an image.
Anyway, if you're happy with your Photoshopping, I'm going to find it hard to convince you that our portraits are worth your while.

        • +8

I disagree with you that they're "simple effects". Big difference between vectorising an image in photoshop and drawing an image; you can tell the difference particularly with the pet ones where you can see all the brush strokes.

            • +4

@FredAstair: Dude. Why are you getting so upset? I was just disagreeing with you on the photoshop comment - and that's just based on the example photos OP has on their website, so i can only use judgement on that.

You never really made it clear in your original comment that you had work done by them so perhaps the store rep can provide comment on why they did a shoddy job? Could you perhaps upload what you received as an end product at all? If the real product received is half-arsed compared to their examples then yeah that's a bait and switch so feel free to neg the deal because I have no connection whatsoever.

OP can you provide comment that finished pieces are to the standard of the examples?

              • +1

                @Chickenleg: Hey!
Not only are they of the same standard, the examples on our website are finished products of customers that allowed us to post them publicly.
We ask for permission of all our customers.
                Also, thanks for the love.

              • -7

@Chickenleg: And you judged me on my comment.
Thus why I commented like I did.

Sorry, but don’t place pictures of our children online.

If it want for our persistance we would have gotten a shoddy job.

The first drafts were all same image but with different backgrounds and the striped t-shirt wasn’t included. Just a plain t-shirt

                • +3

                  @FredAstair: Damn, you’re very salty.

                • +1

@FredAstair: Wow. For this mob to have to deal civilly with customers like you, I'll give them another star.

        • It's like saying the handmade Ramen from a Japanese Ramen shop is not as good as instant Ramen from Amazon so the service is sub par at Japanese Ramen shop

It's a personal preference sort of thing. Have you personally ordered from OP, compared with a Photoshopped one printed on canvas? Otherwise how did you jump on a conclusion? (I might also try speaking in your style: what makes you an expert? Are you affiliated with Photoshop or a friend of Adobe's boss?)

In case you ask, no I'm not affiliated to anyone and yes I also use photoshop. You have basic Photoshop skill perhaps don't know the details are very hard to vectorise…

          • @b0b0:

It's like saying the handmade Ramen from a Japanese Ramen shop is not as good as instant Ramen from Amazon so the service is sub par at Japanese Ramen shop

Sorry, but your comparison is odd.
The service is for a personalised digitalisation of of a photo.
When I can (and when we received the 1st draft I did the same through a couple of free apps to show her it could be done for free, in a quality worth printing, and she was shocked tbh)

I might also try speaking in your style: what makes you an expert? Are you affiliated with Photoshop or a friend of Adobe's boss?

Again, weird comment. Not affiliated. Just was given an opportunity decades ago to use photoshop. I figured if I can do as good a job as they offered me, then why would I be paying so much for this ¿

            Vectorise

Again. I’m basic with photoshop. I. Surely even know what vectorising is, but again, if an untrained person like myself can tell the difference between a ‘phone it in’ attempt then it’s an below average attempt by a business selling this service.

I really don’t get the backlash here.
            We paid for this service
            Yes, we got prompt service.
We got given a sub par result though. Until we kept feeding back to them what they actually needed to do to make it look ok.
Man… I’ve seen threads on social media showing clothing catalogues being roasted for attempting to overlay a pattern over a models clothing instead of making the pattern follow the curves of the model.
Yet, I’m being roasted here for pointing out that they tried to pass of a substandard job to us.

It’ll like a troll feet here lately.

    • +4

I just re-read your thread, and realised you previously placed an order with us and you weren't talking about our artwork in general. I'm sorry for my earlier misunderstanding.

It took us a few attempts

I'm sorry if you misunderstood the process, but we always send our art to our customers for approval, and we're happy to make as many tweaks as necessary until our customers are happy with the final piece. We want it to take a few attempts becuase that means it is an interactive process where our customers have input.

We were informed by the person that placed your order that they were happy with it, and they told us that our artist did an "amazing job". So as far as we were aware, there were no issues. If we had been told that there were issues, we would've been happy to address them.

The quality of the first drafts could have been reproduced on free a picture to cartoon app.

While this might seem to be the case, I can assure you that the work our artist does is a much better quality, where she actually draws every single line, and this (to us) looks much better than any app you can throw an image into. If you disagree, I'm sorry that we disappointed you.

Again, I'm sorry for the earlier confusion.

  • +7

They look like great gifts and I'm impressed with your responsiveness to comments so far. I'd be more interested in a 50-25% discount off one portrait rather than two prints of the same portrait.

Good luck with the new business!

    • +3

Thanks for the compliment and the tip! We'll definitley be running a deal like that in the near future.

      • +2

        Cool, subscribed.

        • +1

          You've made my evening :)

    • +17

I'm sorry that you despise this, and that you think that of us — That is certainly not our intention.
In the right hands, the value of a digital copy can be immense. It can be re-printed, used on multiple products, and obviously used digitally. Additionally, our artist works for hours to create it. Therefore, giving it away for less than that doesn't make sense to us.
In the future, we might consider offering it for less/free but unfortunately at this stage, we are unwilling to do so.

        • +4

I'm not sure how to answer this, but I'll give it my best shot :)
You're correct, only if they purchase the digital copy, would we send it to them for them to use however they like.

As I said, we might consider lowering this price in the future, and feedback like yours is definitely appreciated as it helps us make such decitions. We've only just recently started the business and we're always looking for ways to improve / make sure we meet as many people's needs/wants as possible.

        • +20

Ask a professional photographer if they give you the digital image for free. Its their IP and their copyright in the digital production of the image.

All the photographer does is click a button on a camera….

You paid for a print, if you want a digital copy you should pay for that.

FYI at these prices, pool attendants are getting paid more per hour, have some humility.

          PS Don't call him dude.

          • +7

@dogzilla: Thank you. Just a big heartfelt thank you!

          • +1

            @dogzilla:

Ask a professional photographer if they give you the digital image for free. Its their IP and their copyright in the digital production of the image.

            This.

Major difference between paying for a product vs getting something which lets you reproduce it infinitely… and what surprises me (and granted I've never engaged a digital portrait artist before) is that you also get the PSD file which lets you manipulate it (in addition to reproducing it).

        • +7

$30 is pretty cheap if anything…I assume they will send you files to use as you'd like. If anything, that file is worth more than anything printed

          • +1

@ExtraSalt: You assumed correctly (PSD and PNG).
And you're right on that last point :)

        • +2

          Hardly exploitation.

They’ve requested a fee for a particular media. $90 for a physical one-off print, which you could scan if you really wanted to make duplicates. Or $30 for a digital version of their amazing work, which is usable on any media you want. You’re paying for the convenience and quality.

Would you complain when going to a book store to buy a physical book which did not come with an e-book version? Probably not.

Unfortunately artists get such a bad run these days with people thinking their work is so easy and should be given out for next to nothing. This is the kind of thinking that should be despised.

      • +1

To change the optics on this, you should probably raise the price to digital to $60-70, then charge $100 for digital plus print, etc.

        • +1

Love it! I'll definitely look into reshaping our prices.
          Thank you.

          • @amitos: I'd love for you to set up two separate sites and do one that is only digital and one that is only print and see what gets more business! Be an interesting experiment.

            • @serpserpserp: Thats an interesting idea that I'd love to give a shot one day!

        • -1

..and NFT of it for 900

          • +1

@May4th: I was wondering who the first one will be to mention NFTs! You get all the bonus points!!!
Funnily enough, our artist is quite deep into that rabbit hole, and has been for months.
Thinking of actually selling these as NFTs some time soon ;)

      • -1

Not attacking you at all, but I kinda agree with Barbrady.
Sure your artists work for hours to create it, but that's what they get paid for isn't it?
I never understood being charged MORE for digital copies. I'm paying business (xyz) for photos of people or events that I have requested. It has no significance to the photographer/artists either so why should I pay more to keep the original files? What purpose does it serve you?

We recently had some school/kinder photos done and whilst hey were fantastic, they charged a bloody fortune for the digital copies which I was pissed off about.

        • +2

Your rant has already been addressed above

        • Pretty much every photography service does this. Dont have to like it but it is the norm. Santa photos we had recently charge more for a digital copy, as did the studio we just got our daughters Ballet photos through.
Go to any artist and get a digital picture done and you will pay extra for the digital copy. Otherwise you could just buy the cheapest size they offer, get the digital for free, and print up the size you really want. Does that really make sense to you?

    • +2

I also prefer digital and have had amazing results from fiverr tbh.

      • I love fiverr!

    • +2

$30 isn't unreasonable for the rights to the original artwork. The print prices might fall into the unreasonable category

      • +1

        Hey :)
Thanks for having our back with the artwork saga.
As for the print price, I'm sorry that you think it's unreasonable. To our defence (in case it helps), we use local a local company that print this using high-end printers on extremely high quality canvas. Moreover, we send these in small batches and they are not mass produced. All those factors mean that it costs more to print than the average job. In future, if we manage to grow our business, we'd love to have our own printer and then be able to reduce the cost.
        Thanks again

    • Did you ask for the intellectual property of your car or fridge when you bought them? Did you think it was incuded in the price? They just have to email you the patent applications, cad drawings, technical documentation, etc etc. Or if you bought a print/painting from harvey Norman for your lounge, did you ask the salesguy to email you the intellectual property and worldwide reproduction rights from the artist, which surely was included in the price?

Did you ever consider that artists can only charge such low prices for their time (and wedding photographers for that matter) by removing things like copyright, original digital media and reproduction rights for the end user, rather than automatically thinking they were trying to rip you off?

What the artists pricing is telling you is: $120 for the time taken, print and original digital media, OR $90 for just the time taken and print, which is what most people want and makes the pricing more affordable.

      • Wow! I think I'm going to have to ask you for permission to use the intelectual property, IQ and EQ that you showed here for future posts or questions on this mattter. That was brilliantly put. Thank you.

        • This should cover it:
Subject to the terms and conditions of this License, I hereby grants to You a perpetual, worldwide, non-exclusive, no-charge, royalty-free, irrevocable copyright license to reproduce, prepare Derivative Works of, publicly display, publicly perform, sublicense, and distribute the Work and such Derivative Works in Source or Object form.

Oh, and unless explicitly stated, I don't give away the original media or reproduction rights to my art or design work either. The type of customer who really wants that sort of thing is happy to pay for it. Focus on those customers and less on the ones who expect a thousand dollars of value for $50 and you'll be a lot happier.

          :)

          • @6amcrisis: Thank you so much for this grounded opinion and information. Much appreciated.

  • +3

I'm loving the website, the artist has amazing talent! I was wondering if you offer digital-only portraits?

    • +1

      Thanks for amazing compliments.
We don't currently offer it as a standalone product on our website, but if you contact us via our website or any other methods listed on the site, we can certainly look into this for you :)

  • Just wondering if your artist has done any portraits of adults

    • +3

She has! Our website actually started as a baby goods website so we focused on babies and pups.
We recently pivoted and offering portraits of all beings :)
However our only example of adult portraits are of a couple that broke up, so we're unable to share it publicly.
She's working on a few adult portraits as we speak.
They'll be uploaded over the next few weeks (if the customers allow).

  • +2

+1 just for your responses OP. Very impressive!

    • +1

I'm not allowed to +1 your comment, but I would if I could any town!

  • Even full price seems pretty fair if the pics on the website are representative of the quality. Artists deserve to be fairly compensated for their work.

    • Our artist says "thank you!"

  • +1

How long would it take for this order to arrive (from order date)

    • Hey! Thanks for the question.
We only have one (amazing) artist, so the total time changes depending on the volume of sketches/orders already in progress.
However, our artist strives to complete the sketching within a week, and then it takes about another week for printing.
Then we ship it out, and shipping times vary depending on where you are :)

  • +1

+1 for the engagement. The about us section is cute. Would definitely come back for this for gifting for the next occasion!

    • +1

      Thanks!
We'll be running more deals via OzBargain at some stage, and hopefully that aligns with the next occasion you need a gift :)

  • +4

This looks like you've used software or a filter. I would need to see photos and the painting of it to be convinced. The 1 you show of the little girl looks identical so I doubt it's a painting

    • +2

I am guessing they trace the photo, which is why it looks identical.

    • I suggest check their IG, plenty of videos.

      • +1

You need to have an IG account to view the link they posted and I don't have. Would be better to post some links to a photo hosting board

        • If someone was interested in seeing our work, they can easily find our Facebook page, which also has our work.

Also, we're always happy for a chat via email, where we can send plenty of our previous work.

    • Hey :)
If you have a look at some of our social accounts, you'll come across a number of posts that show both the subject and the final sketch. You'll also see some videos where you can see that every single brushstroke is done by hand.
If you still think that it looks like it was simply dropped into a filter, I'm sorry that you think that.

  • +2

Yeah tbh, I think with art being digital nowadays, anyone with an iPad or photoshop can trace the photo and get half decent results. Not as impressive as drawing it live but that's just my opinion.

    • +3

I definitely agree with you - the ability to create something digitally is a lot more accessible these days. Not only are tablets becoming more affordable, but the software available is getting better and better every year (check out Procreate).
On the other hand, not everyone has a professional background in design coupled with hours and hours of practice.
What we offer is the service of having an artist (not a half decent hobbyist), pair with our customers to create something that our customers cannot do themselves, and work until it's perfect and completely decent.
If this is not something that you find valuable, which seems to be the case here, I completely understand.

  • Do you get to choose the background colour? (I assume this the actual canvas colour?)

    • +1

You do get to choose the background colour! And you actually get to make any special requests (within reason) for any added flairs.
The fabric canvas used is white, so the background colour is printed. This gives us the flexibility of being able to use any background colour.

  • So these are artist software images. Not hand drawn. Still a lot of skill involved to create the image electronically based on software skill. Should do some caricature images. Be a different spin on it and still easily done with software.

    • +1

Caricatures! Great idea. Definitely a whole different skill set but I'm sure our artist would be willing to explore this.
I guess the subject of hand-drawn can be a bit confusing. Our portraits are drawn by hand, using an Apple Pencil and a Wacom pen. Sure, it isn't on paper, but our artist and our customers still consider this to be hand-drawn.
The alternative (not hand-drawn) is putting the image into a software and applying a filter. This ends up with a completely different result, which you would be able to tell when looking at the final product.
But as I said earlier, I suppose this can be interpreted differently by different people and I'm sorry we were not able to meet your expectations.

  • This is great! I've actually been looking for something similar. I've put in an order :)

    • Shazzadabazza is dabesta! Thank you.

  • +1

In case anyone is still around, we only have 1 coupon left for this deal. If I'm around when it's used, I'll be expiring this OzBargain post.

Thank you everyone for all the love and support.

  • I would have loved this offer if I could have two for one to have two separate images for both my kids.

    • Thanks for the interest. We'll look to run some more deal at some stage and we'll take your feedback on board! :)

  • Was wondering when @aminoz moved out of the protein market and into the portrait market

    • I haven't been to the gym since our baby was born! So you won't find any Bulk Nutrients here.

  • Thanks everyone! What a ride this was. Can't wait to take what we've learnt here and keep on improving our offerings.
We appreciate all the kind words you've sprinkled throughout your comments.
    Have a great week!
