Free iOS and Android App "Pocket (Formerly Read It Later) " (Was $2.99)

1390

Description from AppStore

When you find something on the web that you want to view later, put it in Pocket. It automatically syncs to your phone, tablet, or computer so you can view it any time, even without an internet connection.

Use Pocket when you discover an interesting article, video or web page, but don’t have time to go through it. Once it’s in Pocket, it’s on your phone, tablet, or computer. You can read an article during a flight, see a web page while you wait in line, or watch a video while relaxing at home.

WHAT YOU CAN POCKET: Articles, videos, or pretty much anything you find online.

VIEW EVERYWHERE: If it’s in Pocket, it’s on your phone, tablet, and computer.

EASY ON THE EYES: See your articles, videos, and everything else in a beautiful, easy-to-view layout.

PLAYS WELL WITH OTHERS: Save directly from your browser or from over 300 different apps like Twitter, Flipboard, Pulse, and Zite.

Ditto, so did I! Just imagine what we could have done with that 10cents had we hung off a bit longer.

        • +5

It wouldve been sitting in ubank accumulating high interest!!

        • Didn't buy it @ 10 cents last time. Freebie here I come!

FYI, Pocket will be free for everyone permanently (and will replace the paid Read It Later Pro).

  • Can this save YouTube videos?

    • -3

      .

    • For that, you need an app called FreeDi youtube downloader. Not available on the play store, you have to get it from elsewhere (chk getjar, other app stores - sorry cant recollect at the moment)

  • How do you uninstall the bookmarklet?

    • delete it like any other bookmark?

  • this is a very handy app to have, especially if ur on a crappy network, with poor data service (i.e. vodafone, three), as you can save articles while ur on wifi at home and read later on train etc…

This is honestly one of the best services. I bought the Pro Version for $2.99 when it was first released as it's a service I use all the time. On Firefox, it integrates very well with Google Reader as well so you can mark feeds to read later in a nicely formatted view. And unlike Readability and Instapaper, Pocket (Read it Later) follows the design guidelines for ICS on Android and iOS on iPhones/iPads. The devs are awesome. Best of all, it's free now.

Bah, paid 10c on Android last year [OzBargainer laments the loss of his hard earnt 10c]

OR you could bookmark the website in your mobile's browser.

What is the point of this? I can't believe they were charging for something so useless.

Well if you have a crapola 3G connection like I do, its nice to pre-download things you want to read on the bus using your home wifi.

      • Then cache them in your phone's cookies.

  • Installed but can't get it to do anything.

Tried sending a page to the email address they specified - nothing.

Clicked on the link they sent to "install the bookmarklet or browser extension" which just sent me to Pocket in itunes which it said is installed.

Far too complicated to use and no instructions that actually work. About to immediately dump this piece of junk.

    • The link sent to me directed me to the pocket website where there is a button you can drag to your browser and there will be a bookmark/button that can send websites to the app. I have tried it and it worked swiftly. For the email thing, I believe you need to verify the email address. Hope this helps

      • Thanks. I persevered (the instructions are just plain wrong) and got it to save a page from the bbc news site but it saved only one article on the page!

        Deleted!

    • OP - please post minimum IQ required in title. Thanks

  • Requires iOS 5.0 or later.

  • Very handy app! Thanks!

Since this is the permanent pricing of the app, would it really be classified as a "bargain"? Don't get me wrong, a free and well-designed app is THE thing to get me excited! And indeed, I'm over the moon that such an app exists!

  • I too bought Read It Later Pro ages ago and use it on a daily basis. Its such a great app, one of my favourites.

But anyway, for current RIL users:

"If you’re a Read It Later Pro user, you’ll get Pocket with our latest app update. (Read It Later Free users, you will need to download the new Pocket app separately.) Once the app is installed, getting started is easy: If already have a Read It Later account, just sign in to Pocket with that. Your saved content will be right there waiting for you."

From the official announcement post for it here:

    • no problems here mate.

      • I just sorted this if you got a problem. Clear the cache data via Applications for Google Framework and Playstore, then reboot

        Scared me just now
